It's very smart from McLaren, they don't have to pay his wages, they can let him develop in another team and benchmark him against a great driver in Hulkenberg and because they let him go and get a seat, they part on good terms. Then if a seat becomes available and McLaren is still a front running team, he'd jump at the chance to come back if he's living up to his potential! Win win win for them!

With the significance of the rule changes and restrictions on what a current F1 driver/team can do to prepare I'm not actually sure it does make sense - seems to me you could give him more time in a sim/on track in a more representative to the post rule change car if he is not on the grid.

@@foldionepapyrus3441 It's the perfect window to put a rookie on mid-small teams. Enough space and time for a rookie to get used to F1. No huge pressure because Sauber is on a bad tide anyway. And even with all technology invested in sims, nothing prepares better than the real deal. Bearman suffered a lot in Brazil, but he passed through the worst scenario. Next year he'll be less tense. Also, the focus will be more on the subsequent year development. Drivers on 2025 will be more on the "What you see is what you get" than on the "we need to develop this further" wave.

He was competing with Piastri for the F3 title as well (and didn't have a PREMA).
