    CV is the one game where your decisions can easily cause you to reach a fail state, depending on your inventory management during the character swaps.

      Oof, definitely. That's probably my biggest issue with the game. But if you play smart by making multiple ink ribbon save files, you shouldn't have to restart the playthrough. That's probably something you should do in everything Resident Evil game with ink ribbons.

      Hard disagree. Even if you have Chris naked and fail in preparing all the items to get extra weapons like the magnum, the game will still give you more than enough Handgun ammo (and shotgun if you pick it up) to survive and kill bosses. I remember becoming the knife master when I played my first run.

      Yes! CV was the only game in the series I was forced to restart, as I just did not have the ammunition to beat the tyrant fight. I'm a masochist though, so, I count that in it's favor. Let's face it, an RE game that is liberal with resources is no true RE game.

    They couldn't just make them all the same game. I think that RE6 was fun, and the story was alright. It may not be the classic RE game, but it wasn't garbage. If you like the classic games then RE6 will make you appreciate them more. Anyway, REmakes coming soon enough. I will not let anyone badmouth RE5. If you dont want all the guns, dont equip them. I think the thing that makes the originals, 4, and 7 so popular is how small the games are. RE5 and 6 used linear missions that didn't let you go where you wanted. Future RE games should try to make the world smaller so they can focus on making that map as complex as possible (without over doing it).

    Well done video

  • @Fastynator
    @Fastynator ปีที่แล้ว

    First of all, I like this approach of analysing gameplay aspects using a Framework and the heavy Gameplay focus. It makes it unique from the RE-based content that can usually be found here.
    These are some of my thoughts about some points in this video.
    - In general, the fixed camera games feel more puzzle focused, not only in terms of the explicit puzzles and the progression of figuring out where to go and what to do, but also what single best approach there is for each enemy. Once you figure it out, there is rarely a reason to do things differently (like always shotgun headshots against zombies and running past spiders). The approach is further confirmed by the fact that it is effortless to execute and you won't run out of ammo. If you run out of ammo, the single best options have not been figured out yet or creatures are shot at that are better run past by. Context of the situation that could change the strategy only matter in rare moments and tactical mastery is at best needed, if at all, in some boss fights. Games from RE 4 and onward consider both the context and the tactical knowledge more.
    Therefore, I don't see the fixed camera games having lots of decision making involved, not absent, but not to such a high degree as portrayed in this video. Finding the single best approach and always go with it everytime and everywhere has more to do with puzzle solving and less with meaningful decisions. RE 3 is the outlier here. The explicit choices still have the single best approaches while combat offers a high amount of decisions in terms of customizability as described in this video. They are still not that meaningful though. From my experience, most approaches work more or less equally as efficient (the differences as minor as they rather matter in optimzed competetive runs than casual runs) so there is little that can be done wrong here with few exceptions here and there. I personally would rank the fixed camera games with decision making of 1 or 2 and 3 for RE 3.
    - RE 1 and Remake 1 are totally different games. While in RE 1, figuring out combat aproaches are relevant for at least three of the enemies (zombies, non-stealth dog variant, and some of the Hunters) and you can move freely across the environment, in Remake 1, shooting is made so unefficient that you just run past every enemy with very few exceptions (for example enemies near save rooms or zombies in rooms you visit only once and you grow tired of constantly dodging them). This is probably the reason why ammo is absurdly low in Remake 1, since they are mostly reserved for bosses anyway. Also revisiting non-hallway room types is usually punished in some way, so you should visit most rooms only once (further emphasized due to the Crimson Head mechanic). I prefer the direction taken in RE 1 over Remake 1.
    - I personally wouldn't rank Item Management this high for the fixed camera games. You have little room, yes, but you also don't need to take much with you either (usually just one weapon and spare ammo, maybe one healing item, but also that becomes more obsolete when you know what's ahead and what you are doing, and a key item that will be used up) to make room for picking up everything in the environment). RE 4 and onward have bigger space because taking different things becomes more important. Item Management was always RE's strong point, but I think future games did this concept more justice than the fixed camera ones. I would rank all games with an Item Management of 3 with exception with RE 0 because of the missing Item Boxes and everything has to be carried over to the next areas.
    (- Speaking of Item Management. I am personally irritated why many say that RE 1 has scarce resources. I always end up in both normal and Arrange mode with having about 175 handgun bullets, 50 shotgun shells (30 in Arrange) and 30 Magnum bullets before the final encounter. The beginning before obtaining the shotgun is troublesome, but because the game is too open ended with most rooms having no handgun ammo and being pointless until a certain moment that creates rather tedious trial and error for figuring out the exact path than wise resource management. So I have nothing against that since RE 2 the games start more linear to avoid pointless trial and error with the starting equipment.)
    - Although finding all places with resources in RE 1 and Remake 1 is more important than the other games, I wouldn't say those games have less exploration. RE 1 has rather empty environments, so finding points of interest is not that difficult. In RE 2 and 3, there are less obvious hiding places, and therefore less mandatory. Remake 1 has the system where the map shows if you found everything in one room, so the requirements to pick them up could become more strict again.
    Thanks for sharing. Interesting analysis has been made in this video.

  • @theccarbiter
    @theccarbiter 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I wonder why you didn’t make story one of your criteria as well. Also how is RE1 remake combat more simple than RE1’s combat when it has more weapons and new mechanics like emergency weapons and crimson heads? Also you’re rating system isn’t very effective because you more or less just rate how much of something a game has and not whether or not it has a necessarily good or bad impact on the game, like re1 has simple combat but that plays to the advantage of the game meanwhile zero has a lot of inventory management but many find it to be tedious. Maybe you did the system like that on purpose though.

    • @ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502
      @ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502 ปีที่แล้ว

      You've missed the point completely.
      The point is to compare how different the games are to play. How good or bad they are is not the point. Ranking story would also be pointless as that doesn't factor into gameplay. I guess you could compare how story light/heavy they are, but honestly the the difference there isn't much.

    • @theccarbiter
      @theccarbiter ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502 because story is a very important part of re games, it decides the setting, who you play as, and what enemies you fight. Also how good and bad they are are built into the rank system, thats what a rank measures. If they wanted to just compare gameplay differences then a rank doesnt make any sense unless they want to show how the gameplay affects how good or bad the game is overall, which is what they do.

    • @daviddoty8413
      @daviddoty8413 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Using the Dolphin Emulator on PC to emulate the Gamecube versions is a good option, you'll need a 'rom' of the game(s) which you can acquire through not very legal means or by using a wii with homebrew to rip the image file from the disc then transfer to your pc.
      The "RE Seamless HD Project" would be my choice, with greatly increased visual fidelity it really feels like a mini-remaster of sorts. You can download a pre-built folder with the textures and a custom version of Dolphin from their web site, then all you'll need is a copy of the Rom for RE2 or RE3.

      @@RubyofBlue Again Capcom said firstly that the game directed by Kamyia would become Re3. Then this new game was ported on PS2, the team split and it became both Re4 and Devil may cray. Then Capcom decided that Re:Nemesis would become Re3. Capcom NEVER mentionned that Re:Code Veronica would be Re3. Do you have any statement of Cacpom saying Re: Code Veronica would be Re3? The truth is there is none. Code Veronica was always considered as a spin off on Dreamcast as part of a deal between Sega and Capcom. Not to mention that the team who developed Code Veronica were basically not from Capcom (it was not the case for Re:Nemesis). Saying that Capcom seriously considered Code Veronica as the new Re3 is just fan rumors and nothing more.

      @@RubyofBlue
      The wikipedia Re3: Nemesis page says:"Resident Evil 3 was developed by Capcom and produced by Shinji Mikami. After the release of Resident Evil 2, Capcom was working on multiple Resident Evil projects and a team led by Hideki Kamiya developed what was planned to be the next main installment. According to Resident Evil 3 scenario writer Yasuhisa Kawamura, the intended game "was loosely set on a luxury cruise liner and had a general plot where Hunk was attempting to bring back a sample of the G-Virus" featured in Resident Evil 2. However, Capcom realised that the game would not be complete in time for a Playstation release due to Sony's announcement of the Playstation 2, so the project was cancelled. As Capcom did not want fans to wait some years for a new game, the company promoted one of its other projects as the third main canonical game while Kamiya's team moved onto Resident evil 4.
      The selected project was a spin-off that was being developed by an inexperienced team under director Kazuhiro Aoyama."
      So, again, as far as I know, Capcom never wanted Re: Code Veronica to be Re3.

    I would've given RE3 a 4 in combat. You forgot about the dodge mechanic, as well as the STI Eagle giving free headshots every so often while firing twice as fast as the regular handgun. And Nemesis alone is worth an extra point as there isn't a single enemy in any other classic RE game that can be reasonably compared. Not even Mr. X.
    Exploration deserves a 4 as well thanks to the RNG, making it worthwhile exploring nearly every single area in the game on every playthrough; not just because of items and enemy spawns, but also because of the choices made during panic scenarios. Sometimes certain choices will put you in places that are otherwise inaccessible, sometimes Carlos gives you ammo, sometimes he doesn't.
    Inventory management also deserves a 4, considering you have SO MANY DECISIONS for weapons, ammo, gunpowder, etc. Seriously, there are so many items and keys.
    There's a lot of depth in RE3 and this game should've been ranked higher than all others.
    RE0 is just a mess. I can't stand that game. It's so full of pointless busywork and it's so tedious and repetitive and it was a mistake to remove the Item Box.
