Right on the money, Jamal! I’m a bassist and when I learning keyboards on a Rhodes MK1 73; my MD, who’s a keyboardist was teaching me the importance of “DYNAMICS!” Can’t play a Rhodes like a grand piano, organ, or even a synth (velocity sensitive was UNHEARD of back in the ‘80’s). I was hearing chords but was not “listening” to the dynamics of my playing. What you said made so much sense. That’s why I’m going to upgrade to the Antelope Audio interface. The converters are real clean and warm. I know this videos is years old but info is EXCELLENT! God bless you, bro.😌🎹🎶🙏🏾🕊👍🏾

You are right on Bro. I had the same experience with a Roland X-50 that I have had for a while now. I let this Bro I know use it at a gig and I couldn't believe that that was my board that he was playing. I noticed he played each voice with different articulations. That experience made me go back and STUDY THE INSTRUMENTS that the sound patches were emulating. A grand piano is not an upright, a Rhodes is not a Wurlitzer, a Harpsichord is not a Clavinet, a Lowery is not a B-3. So I went to the masters and studied guys like George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Ramsey Lewis, Ahmad Jamal, Bob James, Jack McDuff, Jimmy McGriff, Jimmy Smith, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Joey DeFransesco, etc. to get a history on the ways that particular instruments were used. Then I looked at how modern musicians such as yourself and guys like Corey Henry are expressing themselves today. Great stuff Bro. Keep up the great work!!!!!

On another note, depending on what keyboard or keyboard controller you are using, you need to set your "velocity curve" to match your playing style. EVERY keyboard will have adjustable velocity curves, and to accurately manipulate the velocity layers of whatever sound you are using, you need to adjust your velocity curves accordingly.

Completely agree with you, Jamal! It's also important to note that sometimes the sounds we use aren't for the right purpose. I tried out neo soul keys for chick corea's Spain, and it sounded weird. Very important to play well, and to use your sounds to their advantage, not like me, trying a soul/gospel piano on a Chick Corea piece haha!

Jamal, I love your chord flow. I am an advanced keyboard musician, and even though I have a good sense of chording and good at accompaniment and production, I haven't quite got the hang of the jazz/gospel Chordal flowing that is it's so prevalent among contemporary gospel musicians and organists today, even though my chords are also advanced. But melting one great chord into another and then another, I end up recycling the same chord progressions, although to the delight of my audiences. I just want to go higher!
I think one of my hinderances is that I don't play in every key. I only play in A flat, B flat, E, flat C sharp, an F sharp, F, G, and C, but I don't play in A,B,D or E natural.
I started playing in Keys like G,F and C, but then started playing in all of the flats, and preferring to play most things in the flats, but rarely the naturals.
I could use some good advice! I play Gospel, R&B, some Jazz, Funk, Neo Soul, etc.
    I'm all ears!! :-)

AGREE . i was having exactly this same issue. It changed a lot when i played more softly and used more elaborated chords. I know exacly what kind of sound everyone wants, and the first minutes with the software can be frustrating, BUT people, use more complex chord progression and go soft on the keys, you will feel the difference instantly , this kind of sound its waaaay hard to get then normal piano sounds

I loved that you talked about how playing techniques influence in the sound that you hear. There is a guy in my church who is an outstanding musician, and he can get amazing sounds from average keyboard like no one that I know can. He has an old korg X5 and the things he can make with that little and old keyboard impress me a lot sometimes.

Hey Jamal, can u do a video about live sound and which amps for keyboards is best. I'm thinking of of people go straight thru a keyboard amp instead of the system at church or wherever they might be. A lot of people are running thru crappy amps that primarily was made for practice at home. No one has really made s video of this type before. I think it is really needed..

Excellent points and practical tips. As live/studio musicians it's important to keep in mind that our quality of sound is almost always an expensive venture. At least for me, it has been (and still is) a process and should be a key point of investment for any musician wanting to expand and refine their sound. Plugins alone aren't gonna do it.

In Cubase, for Motif, Mox, Mo8, you can have midi xml's templates( by the way, Steinberg belongs to the Yamaha), you can install that midi xml's templates and Cubase will know the internal position of Yamaha Motif, Mox, Mo8 sounds( voices, tones) and playing as well on midi through a midi usb cable. No just midi events, but also, audio too!
    Cheers!

Hey Jamal one point of correction even though you are coming-out of the Motif via firewire YOU ARE STILL PLAYING THROUGH THE SOUNDCARD AUDIO OUTPUT (D/A). Also most sound cards d/a are very good indeed infact one could argue much better than the d/a on the motif. To me the most crucial factor is indeed the keyboard and the velocity layers , if you play through a non weighted keyed chances are you will bypass number of velocities , if you play through a motif xf type keybed (weighted) you will likely get better but off course there may be even better controllers. I found the mpk88 had the most difficult consistency of velocity it took me a while to get used to it as each time i hit the keys i got different velocities even though i was fairly consistent.

I'll tell u this Jamal made it possible for me to lighten my load of equipment. The iPad is killer in that it has almost every sound available that anyone would use. The ik multimedia piano sounds are amazing, and I can't forget Jamal's Rhodes sounds which I have them all. If anyone out there hasn't tried iPad for your midi sounds yet you need to immediately. I'm waiting now for someone to make an authentic Hammond sound on the iPad that actually is at least semi close to an xk3 or nord. Shoot I may do it myself lol

  • @AndersHellquist
    @AndersHellquist 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have to agree that chords and velocity and arrangement makes a lot of sense to how it sounds but I think there is one more aspect that I personally think few are considering.
The sound chain used when creating and tweaking the bank as well as the listening evironment will affect the final product. That means the final product might have some dips or peaks frequency wise that will show up for everyone except Jamal or the people involved in creating the patch. I personally think that is at least a small contributíon to the discussion about different soound than Jamals.
Also Youtub compression and whatever stuff they do to the sound will affect the result somewhat.

Love your videos. Very good and helpful points. Also some food for thought as far as expressiveness and technique in playing style is that a weighted key keyboard can effect the style and sound of expressiveness vs a non weighted key keyboard because of how easy it is to press down and switch velocities on the key as well.

It depends. Assuming you have a Mac, either one will have the same quality, because it is a true digital signal. I personally would use the Firewire, because it has a greater bandwidth than the USB and it handles audio streams better. Just be careful not to daisy chain too many firewires at once, because you will loose your bandwidth.

GospelMusicians Gotcha! I actually saw that adapter on sweetwater's site last night. Could you possibly do a video showcasing you recording sounds from the motif into the computer via the m-lan FW(tutorial)? I've never seen it done before...but people have been doing it since the ES I believe.

People dissing the speakers don't know what the fuqq they're talking about. Those HS8's are some of the best studio monitor speakers on the market.

You really think a FireWire expansion is worth upgrading for? I bought a RME Babyface to records my Motif XF6 sounds and getting some pretty good results. Would I really notice recording from that FireWire expansion card?

No sir! The RME is high quality. You don't need the FireWire

You can play a 'bad guy' or his brother as a backup extra in his 'Empire' series. Love your video's brother. I'll be buyin' some stuff soon from your website.
