  • We visit BRADFORD near Leeds in West Yorkshire, England for a walking tour of Bradford City Centre. This walking tour takes us through Bradford from the railway station to the science and media museum, Alhambra Theatre and through the shopping streets to see what's here.
Bradford City Centre is a place Gimbal Walk TV hasn't filmed before so we were keen to explore the city streets here and see the places to see in Bradford. We had stayed in the Midland Hotel on Cheapside next to the Railway Station the night before and so our walking tour starts here right outside the hotel.
Our walk starts on Lower Kirkgate and we head round past The Broadway Shopping centre on Market Street to The Wool Exchange, a grade 1 listed building.
Opposite The Wool Exchange is Charles Street so we head through this fairly new development and onto Broadway which is busy with restaurants, takeaways, The Light Cinema and coffee shops. Quite nice!
From here we head down Broadway and cross Bridge Street to Bradford City Hall. The City Hall also houses the Bradford Police Museum and the Bradford and Keighley Register Office.
This brings us into Bradford's City Park and Centenary Square, a park with large fountains and the City Park Mirror Pool. Around Centenary Square are restaurants such as Nandos and The Turis Green a Wetherspoons pub. Also in Centenary Square is Bradford City Library and the Impressions Gallery.
From Centenary Park we cross Godwin Street to reach The Alhambra Theatre Bradford. This is a historic 1400 seat venue that hosts some great theatre and comedy shows and events.
Right next door to Alhambra Theatre is the Bradford War Memorial and Queen Victoria Statue in Victoria Square. From here we can see our next destination the fantastic National Science and Media Museum which is well worth a look if you visit Bradford. There's also an IMAX cinema here.
Next up we want to tour the shopping streets of Bradford City Centre to see what shops there are for people coming into the city. So we head right up Godwin Street and then turn left onto Sunbridge Road where I wanted to stop off at a Billy Liar Filming Location on the Southgate steps.
Billy Liar is a movie filmed here in Bradford and the Southgate Steps off Sunbridge Road is the location of Billy Liar's workplace at the funeral directors and we stop off to have a look at this instantly recognisable Billy Liar filming location that I've wanted to visit for a while now.
Heading back into the city we cross over and head down Kirkgate towards Kirkgate Shopping Centre and then down Ivegate which is a shopping street with pubs, shops and food places, until we reach Tyrrel Street.
Heading along Tyrrel Street we reach Bank Street and Hustlergate and then back onto Market Street towards the Midland Hotel.
This Bradford City Centre tour is our first visit but we will definitely be back for another walking tour of this West Yorkshire city.
Bradford is a northern city, situated between Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield. It has a football club (Bradford City) and rugby is also a popular sport here.

I'm a proud Bradfordian, you've shown the city as it is, not the crap that is usually seen in many videos. Nice to see the truth for a change as anyone can dig up rough parts of any big city. I've subscribed to your channel, your latest video on Rotherham was a sad walk, that place needs investment in a big way. As you can see, Bradford has a good city centre with some impressive Victorian architecture.

My birth place - and my grandma lived here for many years in the Shipley area - therefore this place holds some precious memories. I know Bradford has MANY downsides BUT I love Baildon Moor (Shipley Glen) and Salts Mill is beautiful. So I guess with everything in life (and every place) there are good and bad points. I love the multi-cultural aspect of Bradford. I am white British male but I love the Pakistani community in Bradford. They stick together and are very kind people.

    • @ChrisW444
      @ChrisW444 ปีที่แล้ว +2

They definitely stick together, surely that is not a good thing. Division is not good. Integration is what is needed in Bradford and that is something that will never happen with a labour council which sadly is still in situ and bringing the City to it's knees. It would be great to have an inclusive society where all cultures meet in the middle (most people I know are open to that and love to integrate), enjoy and help the city to prosper. Step up the council that then prevent this happening when the vast majority want to see it and Bradford continues the go down hill, despite being beautiful and having so much to offer.

    • @Dion_Mustard
      @Dion_Mustard ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@ChrisW444 well there is integration in the sense that all colours and faiths go out for meals at the curry houses and it seems very friendly and genuine kindness . But if you mean integration with the faiths , that will not happen as non Muslims or non religious will not want to become Muslim. I think there is big segregation but equally a good amount of integrating in the business sense.

A quirky underground collection of bars and restaurants with some small independent retail outlets. Nice to see a walk through of my home city. Beautiful architecture with some horrendous brutalist examples sitting uncomfortably amongst it - yes Kirkgate Centre I'm talking about you!
It's great to see ongoing investment, particularly with the new market - which you missed - Bradford Live and the Grade A office development in City Park.
Other areas worth taking in is the subterranean complex of Sunbridge Wells. It's a bit like a museum itself with some great Bradford memorabilia in the place and full of character. North Parade is another street to take in. Again some great architecture - Penny Bank for example - and is full of independent bars, shops and leisure facilities.
If you do video inside buildings, then capturing footage of the inside of the Waterstones store at the Wool Exchange is well worth it. Rated as one of the best book shops in the world!

I was 14 years old when the film crew came to Leeds.
The derelict area where I lived, looked like a war zone. Viva Fisher! was plastered every where. In the background was my old school, Green Lane, New Wortley. My birth place, and that of James Milner (Former Leeds Utd; Liverpool player)

@@GimbalWalkTV Thanks for liking and replying to my post.
Billy Liar was the name of the film but the characters name was Billy Fisher.. (Played by a very young Tom Courtney)
He was basically a day dreamer in the film and he fantasized, over the kind of relationships he wanted to be in with certain women who were amongst his neighbours.
whilst in a daze, his dreaming would be showed on screen.
On one occasion he dreamed that he was a war hero, rescuing a town from the wicked foe.
The area where I lived was going through changes after the war. The houses were being knocked down and people were being moved out of the area. As a result it looked like a war zone. Derelict, piles of bricks where there used to be houses.
On some of the houses that were empty and only half pulled down were this graffiti, "Viva Fisher" every where in an appreciation of his waring capacity to defeat the enemy whilst fanaticising of the locals trying to mob him.
When the filming was over, that graffiti stayed on the walls for nearly a year afterwards. In the filming you can see my school in the background. Happy days growing up.

Excellent video. There used to be a 'Bradford in Film' plaque on the wall by those Billy Liar steps. Clearly it's been removed. If you come back make sure you go INSIDE the Waterstones in the old Wool Exchange - it's been beautifully restored. Also have a walk through Sunbridge Wells, the subterranean olde worlde shopping arcade between Sunbridge Road and Ivegate.

It all looks so changed to the old Bradford town I used to often visit. It looks like there have been many old buildings demolished, streets areas turned into walkways only and new modem buildings put up.
I don't recognise any of it at all.
Commentary would be useful, explaining changes and what the old buildings still standing were used for would be helpful.
E.g. where's the old ice skating rink, where are the cathedrals, the old very imposing police station, the old markets - various sections. And the main bus terminal of the 1960s ?

I was hooked watching this because Bradford always has been and still is a beautiful City. It looks like somewhere you would want to go and explore, wine and dine, enjoy the theatres etc. Very nice. The reality unfortunately is, as you can see in this video, very few people go there to enjoy what there is to offer. The reason being the labour council have promoted division and unrest, they have failed to deal with the degenerates (one of whom you saw early in this film) and they effectively prevent decent people going into the City. They presumably have good intentions and can see the potential however, their political bias and short sightedness prevents there being any hope for the City because they prevent good people coming into the City , those who would spend moeny and enable the economy to prosper. It is so so sad when there is a City with so much to offer that there is a council that constantly drags it down. Very sad indeed for such a lovely place that could be vibrant and better than other places such as Leeds etc. 😞

Most videos about Bradford is how horrible it is. Showing the worse places, high crime rates, etc. So refreshing to see other videos from a different point of view. Judging by this video, its as normal as other cities. I thought it’s like a God forsaken gangstas paradise and total dump. But it looks vibrant here
