I've given up playing around with 4n04r8 powered spot welders they're to unreliable. The best welder I've made so far uses an ATMEGA double pulse controller & a large microwave transformer with 5 turns on the secondary. The trick is finding a large enough transformer I scrapped 10 microwaves before I found the one I was looking for

Yeap microwave transformer it is also better for spot welding I made it already boss, however it is quite heavy.

I bought one of these a couple of years ago and it was so weak. i added heavy copper in much the same way as yourself but it didn't help. I'm extremely hesitant to buy a newer unit. Once bitten twice shy !

Was thinking about doing what you have don.1 Question what temp soldering iron was you using to solder the copper blocks.

Actually I bought 60W soldering up to 450 degree cilcuis but the heat is not enough when soldering thick copper so I bought 80W iron core heating and replace it. hope this link I provided work for you
