4th Semester Nursing Student in a RN, BSN program.
My Program is 4 years total with 6 semesters (3 years) of Nursing Classes.

I loved this video! It was really helpful. I am in the tail-end of my BSN program. My goals include working in a level 3 or 4 NICU then becoming a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. I would love a part two!

I start nursing this Friday & graduate in 3 years. I’ve alwys wanted to be a NNP. I’m way to excited I just really wanna be in the nicu & save babies lives.

I don't know if you're still responding to comments, but I am interested in becoming a NNP or a NICU nurse, the current idea I have was to get a BSN then get MSN after the years of experience, but do you know if it's possible to get experience (at least the two years required) while you're getting your BSN or MSN? Or does it have to be in between?
Edit- and as a NICU nurse or a NNP can you work in multiple levels of the NICU to get experience with different levels of babies?

I recently accepted a job in a very busy ER as a BSN-prepared RN and going to be moonlighting on an OB floor. I am considering NNP and was wondering if they have access to call rooms and physician lounges when they work 24-hour shifts? I have been able to find everything else about I wanted to know but this small tedious fact. Would you please ask her this? Thanks!
They do have a call room to sleep in. It typically has a tv, bed, microwave and a bathroom/shower. It varies from hospital to hospital - some are allowed access to the physicians lounge others are not.

How many hours do nnps normally work. If their working 24 hour shifts wouldn't that be over 40 hours for only 2 days of working. Also do they get compensation for working over 40 hours. I know its different for every hospital but just wondering your moms opinion.
It does vary depending on whether you are employed by the hospital or are contracted to work for the hospital.
Nursing in general is different than your typical “40” hr work week like a traditional 9-5 worker.Nursing typically works 12hr shifts. 36hrs being full time.
Hospital employee- often get time and a half for overtime and possibly shift differential for evenings and weekends.
That model is very similar to the RN model, but is more and more rare.
Contracted employee - ( I work for a company called MEDNAX - they contract my service to the hospital. I am paid by MEDNAX). Our model is similar to the physician model. I am a salaried employee. I contract for “x” number of hours a year for “x” amount of money. My salary breaks down to an hourly rate. That is what I get paid if I work “extra”.
To specifically answer your question we do often work more than 40 hrs in a week. We average 6-8 24 hour shifts a month (6x24=144 to 8x24 =192 hours a month/4 weeks a month = 36-48 hours a week).

Yes and no! So Yes - NICU RN’s typically work a 12 hour shift and a NICU NP typically works a 24 hour shift. But an RN usually works 3 times a week because 12 hours x 3 times a week = 36 hours a week which is roughly full time hours. NP’s on the other hand usually work 2 24 hour shifts a week because that’s 48 hours a week which is over full time. So an RN will usually do 12 ish shifts a month and an NP would do 8. Does that help?

heyy, i was interested in neonatal nursing but became aware that it’s not just about feeding and changing the babies. what would that profession be? a RN?
You would do some of that as an RN in the NICU - but it is still intensive care. So you still have to preform cares for some very sick babies. It won’t be just feeding and changing babies.
Hi! I am a grade 11 student. Working towards becoming a neonatal nurse . I done a lot of research and I found out there are levels 1-3 can u explain the different levels? Because I was interested in doing level one ? What’s that like?
Ya absolutely! The levels in neonates are different than adults. For neonates a Level 4 is the highest level and the sickest babies, it is a NICU that babies from all over the region can be transferred to. A level 3 is a NICU less acute. A level 2 is a specialty care nursery and level 1 nursery has primarily only healthy babies. All units should have the ability to resuscitate and stabilize babies but typically sick babies will be transferred to another unit ( level 3/4) depending on the circumstances. So if you’re wanting to work at a level 1 it will be a well baby nursery, not a NICU. In adults level 1 is the highest acuity but in neonates it’s the lowest.
How much money do NNP out of NP school typically make?
I'm not sure! That is going to vary from state to state, hospital to hospital, etc. I'm sure you could research online for your state and find an average estimate :)
How much do you make a year? What program did you go through to become a NNP?
What she makes a year is a very personal question and is based on a lot of factors (the state your in, the hospital, years of experience, etc.) but she talks about the program she did in the video! Hope that helps
I’m a high school student looking into becoming an NNP but I was wondering what are the schooling requirements to become one. Do I still need to go to college, or just nursing school? Typically how long does it take to become an NNP?
You’ll need to go to nursing school then NP school (masters or doctorate program) with an emphasis in neonatology. Not every program but most programs require that you have to have worked as a nurse for a few years to apply. So from high school if you went right into nursing school you’re looking at 4 years of nursing school, working as a nurse for 3-5 years, then 2-4 years of an NP program depending on the program.

Yes! That’s how a lot of people do it
@@Abigaellanai Oh, ok! So what you guys meant was you guys don't recommend going into the NP route without any experience? My advisors told me to get at least 2 years of experience first and then go do the NP program while working.
Yes exactly!! In our opinion we both definitely recommend doing a few years as an RN before pursuing a program as an NP! I hope that helps clarify ☺️
How does a NICU nurse sign her name?
It depends - if she is an RN with a Bachelors degree it could be RN, BSN. If she is an RN with an associates it could be RN, ASN. She could just sign it RN. Or a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner could sign it NNP. I’m not sure if that’s what your asking?

We didn't have to film it more than once but we had over an hour of footage 😂😅 so that's probably why it feels a little choppy
