    I am so excited. I've been searching for NICU RN youtubers for a long time but there were never any so I gave up. I decided to try again randomly and now there's 3 of you. Y'all are all brown 💅🏾 and new grads. The other 2 are in Houston and that's exactly where I want to be so... I'm just way too excited. Hopefully I can get a new grad position when it's my turn 🤞🏾.

      @@prettybihhh7454 I'm in an accelerated BSN program. It's 20 months long (a little longer than normal accelerated programs because my school make us do anatomy (with cadavers) and physiology in nursing school instead of as a prerequisite). I graduate in May 2019 and I was offered the job on March 1st. I went to two of career fairs of the hospital that I was interested in. Once in September of last year (they didn't seem interested as soon as I told them I was graduating in May... they were probably looking for the December graduates, but I did have great conversations with them) and the other time in mid-February (I talked up the NICU director and the nurse recruiter who sets up the interviews). I asked the nurse recruiters tons of questions and got along with her well, and after about 15 minutes of conversation, she gave me her card and told me to call her the next Monday (it was a Friday) so she could set up an interview for me. My panel interview went great; I had 7 unit directors interviewing me and they told me I had really great questions. Once the interview was over, I went to my car and wrote a thank you letter to the interview team and the nurse recruiter, and sealed it with a wax seal (they REALLY enjoyed that). Then I found out I got the job that Friday.
      I hope this answers your questions.

      @@prettybihhh7454 I forgot to say... it also probably helped that I use to volunteer in that same NICU in 2017 for 8 months, and I kept in touch with the charge nurse. She told me after I got the job that she spoke highly of me.

      My nursing program was accelerated so it only took 16 months. I didn't get to choose my classes, so I had to take whatever they signed me up for. Basically classes that covered the entire lifespan, pharmacology, med surg, assessment, and populations to name a few. Before that, I did a regular 4-year program and majored in biology. Thank you!

      Depends on the school. But overall pre reqs to get into nursing school could take 1-2 years, then nursing school its self (if you are getting a bachelors) is about 1 1/2 years (5 semesters). Then you would just apply to a NICU after graduation.

    We’re in FL so most of our babies are NAS babies. Do you see a lot of those patients and how do you deal with methadone Mom’s that can’t even hold their babies without falling asleep? We see that a lot so we have to have PCT’s with them so that the baby isn’t dropped. How do you handle those situations?

    • @lovelylexis12
      @lovelylexis12  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We see NAS babies quite often. We don't have PCTs with parents but if we notice them falling asleep, we just put the babies back in their crib. All we can really do is watch closely and provide support and education.

    So I know NICU nurses usually work with pretty serious issues but is there a position in the NICU to work with mainly stable babies? What requirements do you need to be a NICU nurse? Thanks for your time. I’m 12 and thinking of becoming a NICU nurse and having these questions answered would really help

    • @lovelylexis12
      @lovelylexis12  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The most stable patients in the NICU are usually just working on gaining weight and learning how to eat from a bottle. When you work in the NICU, you can have any patient so there's no guarantee that you'll only get stable patients. If you want mostly stable patients, a level II nursery might be a better option. To be a NICU nurse, all you need is a nursing degree.
