Very nice to see that State-side! I’ve ridden long-tail boats in Southeast Asia (Burma/Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia) and always thought that they were cool. The best ride was in a small, low to the water boat with only two of us (me at the front) and the driver aboard, on a brief trip up the Mekong River into the Golden Triangle from the Thai city of Chiang Saen to the small Thai town of Sop Ruak near the Burma/Myanmar border (with a brief stop and walk-around in a Laotian border village). Once in the center of the river, the driver opened up the throttle and we hauled balls upriver, with the front of the boat rising and slapping down hard as we cut through the wakes of larger boats. It was a fun ride!

I remember the old GO Devils like that ........... I am fixing to build a mud boat with a 15 HP Briggs with a thru shaft on the bottom of a 14 ft. aluminum hull flat bottom with a 52 in. bottom. Just like a regular inboard but with a 2 blade weedless prop... Air cooled so no issues at all...........
can the prop and shaft be purchased.these were originally developed for undeveloped countries and the motor could be used for muti functions example water pump ,etc.etc.i first seen it about 20 years ago.
I'm wanting to build one of these setups for my 16x48 mud motor I'm going back and forth between a 13 horse and a 25 horse. The boat runs a 25 horse outboard now, I'm concerned that 13 will be underpowered, but yours seems to clip along ok.
I get about 13 - 16mph depending on how many people I have in the boat.(that is plenty fast for me) You could always add an aftermarket exhaust and intake to gain a few HP if it isn't fast enough for you.
I know that these are made for a specific kind of shallow water boating, but this vid shows just how much a handful it is to control that motor.... Seem like if there was a "max depth" stop where you could let it ride unless you needed to lift it for an obstacle, it'd be easier to control. The throttle just looks difficult - you're not able to close one hand over the grip so you have to use two hands? I've used a telescoping handle on my fishing boat alot and the twist throttle and long handle lets you have a more forward position and works really well. Seems like a universal motorcycle grip throttle would make more sense. I've watched some vids of the "beavertail" type mud motors and there's an ease of use there, seems like they have that depth stop and you can either lift it for obstacles or the prop skeg will raise it for obstacles. Just my two cents. Come to think of it, if that throttle lever was just a single finger trigger that would probably solve the problem...
Actually these aren't that hard to handle if you dial them into your boat. I am only using one hand most of the time. Been a while since I did this video but I assume I am grabbing it with two hands because I am going over rough stuff/turning sharp and stabilizing it just in case(but I don't do it the whole video). If I hit a log, etc, I want to make sure it doesn't pop out of my hand. I prefer squeeze type throttles because they are safer. If you let go, they go back to idle. And, on a longtail, a squeeze type is easier to control when you are turning plus safer than a twist type. I am only using a finger or two on that video. That is an old design but we still use squeeze type throttles for the safety. We use a smaller one now that is a little easier but any type of squeeze type is easy. It doesn't require much pressure and only one finger is needed. That all being said, all longtails are going to be harder to handle than a surface drive or outboard. You will not find a better solution for shallow water, mud and stumps. Longtails are the 4WD of outboards. They are also very economic, tough and easy to work on. Pros and Cons of all designs out there.
what about spare parts can you just sale the bracket mounts, I say this because i purchased one longtail but the bracket rusted out from saltwater and cable broke or frose up/ or if my shaft breaks do you replace any and all parts. including props?
Dan Turner we sell all parts. Send us an email and I'll send a parts price list- info@beaverdammudrunners.com We have a customer that has over 1700 hours on his in saltwater. Gotta rinse that salt water off occasionally
A jet will get you through shallow water also but it can still suck up mud, weeds etc which can cause mechanical issues. Jets are also much more expensive and inefficient than long tails. They are also much more expensive than long tails.
