You guys are awesome. Just used this trick to save our 8 year old boy a lot of suffering. From the bottom of our family's heart thanks for posting this trick.
Was up near Lake George and a fellow got one hook of a treble stuck in his finger. I had just told my buddies about this episode of your show, so it was up to me to give it a shot. My one friend removed the treble from the crankbait, using a multi-tool to cut the split ring, and not the eye. I then made two lines up with loops. Another fisherman distracted the victim and "POP"!! out it came. He didn't even realize it was out! He was back fishing. Thanks again. Great show..
I could have gotten it out a lot faster, but I was trying to get him to look away. I finally just went ahead and jerked it out. Besides, he wasn't really going anywhere..... :) He did do a great job and this little accident turned into a great opportunity to demonstrate the hook removal technique.
I just used your vid to remove two of the three hooks on a treble from my leg. Thanks for the info. This allowed me to continue my day after hooking myself on the second cast of the trip and an 9 inch bass.
already have caught a 30# Blue Cat off of these (going to try to get a 60#+ next year). th-cam.com/users/postUgkxzXmlErSqVAEGWFEKO530BvTqFDw53QW3 Definitely very strong, and sharp. Additionally, the gap is wide enough to actually hook a fish (not always the case with circle hooks). I purchased the 8/0, but probably should have got the 9/0 (they seem slightly smaller than other 8/0 hooks). Additionally, having the point in-line helps if you drift fish. I have yet to get a serious snag with one of these hooks.
I have been fishing for ten years and have yet to hook myself badly... Now that I am married and my wife comes with me... I have seen more close encounters hahaha.... Will keep this video in my back pocket and I am dreading the day one of us gets hooked! Thanks for the info!
+Gianca C Great idea. I haven't hooked myself (except on purpose) but I have had other people hook me and hook themselves that I have had to remove. Definitely something that fishermen should know and be able to execute.
Just wait till you have kids! My son plopped a fish in my lap, promptly hooked me in the thigh. My method was turn it through with pliars, real fast before i realized that it hurt, cut the barb then pull it out. I like this guy's technique better, only 1 hole and he saved the hook! Difficult to do yourself though.
We just finished another shoot for Kayak Bassin and I received several requests for a closer look at this technique. So, I used a treble and more visible line to demonstrate the technique on myself. We should have it up pretty soon. It was a lot more difficult that I expected to hook yourself and really get the hook buried. - Chad
Watching this year 2023, it really helped me to help my cat with a fish hook buried in his paws. I also spent hours pulling the fish hook and it only hurts him more and it only got more and more locked too, so I started searching and your demo did not disappoint me. More power to your chanel thank you ..
Oh my gosh that made me feel weak! I was actually looking for a video on how to remove treble hooks from fish because I've never used lures and want to try.
I've had a hook in my skull (behind my ear) and in the finger joint of my thumb. Both were removed by my Dad using this technique. I never felt pain during either.
This was one of the best VLOGS I ever seen.. Again thank you very much.. Very Very good on how to pull a treble hook out of the hand Just awesome for sure.
This is EXACTLY why I replaced ALL the trebles with circle hooks....... It also makes the lures almost weedless, and you get to release healthier fish too! But thank you much for sharing because I do still fish with folks that won't make the switch.
Watched this vid A year or two ago and always kept the knowledge in my head and never thought it would happen to me but the other day has to use it to get a treble out of my thigh
Basically, in this situation (which I've been in multiple times) I would push the hook point through, including the barb, and then cut the hook at the base of the treble and slide it out. Less painful and damaging. I went back to fishing both times.
Was confident the whole time. Pulled out hundreds, it’s just tougher to video it while having yourself in one kayak, the other Angler in another kayak and then the camera guy in another kayak. Confidence was no problem, coordination, that was another story. Lol
One more reason that I've done my best to eliminate all treble hooks from the kayak. Does that mean I'll never get hooked? Nope, but it reduces the odds. Do I miss some fish because I'm only using single hooks? Probably, but I still have a blast. Great video and a worthwhile technique to know!!
I went to a doctor's office to get a hook out. He said you don't wanna do it this way because the barb can catch things and rip muscle or tendons on the way out. He said to push the hook through and pop it through the skin then cut the barb then the remaining part of the hook will just slide out without any issue.
I've only had one treble hook caught in my hand on the back near the base of my thumb (so far). I got a nearby grandfather and his grandson (young fellow), to help me get the fish off the hook. I took my angle cuts and cut the top of the hook from the lure. As I proceeded to grab the hook with my needle nose pliers and curl the hook point out from inside the skin, I looked over at the mans grandson, he was white as a sheet, thought he would faint. I snipped off the barb and pulled it out... ; >)
Mono has lots of stretch and doubling it up does help with that. But if you have braid that's the best way to go because it has 0 stretch and all you have to worry about is the line breaking which is un likely.
I just had this happen to me yesterday on the Caney Fork. I wish I would have known this trick before! I had to push the treble hook back out of my hand so my buddy could cut the bard off with my rusty needle nose. I never want to do that again!
Another option. Rather than the line holding the shank down, and the bother of setting that up, just put a finger on the hook shank and press it down onto the victim’s skin, and jerk the business end of your rescue line. A little bit simpler. Good info video though. This trick works.
OK, so... my Dad always taught us (assuming it's a barbed hook) to push the hook through, snap off the barb and point, then back it out. Does this make sense? Sound right to me, but I've never had to do it. Thanks.
Good video. The angle it is embedded might make a difference in technique used. Only one I've had experience with we pushed it on through after cutting the eye off.
This happened to me in the middle of nowhere and after a few minutes of sitting there with a hook in my hand, I resolved that I had to push it all the way through my finger and cut the barb off. It took some balls to do it, but it worked. Healed in a few days.
Yeah that was a nice way to pull that hook out thats for sure.... i remember when i was fishing for salt water trout in Australia... we had hooks the size of your index finger when you bend it into a hook shape to use to catch the trout or sweetlip & we had a section of a cars drive shaft as a weight...well i went to drop the loaded rig...so it had multiple hooks on it...but the line spooled off two turns & i didnt see it happen & when i dropped it down the back of the boat it dropped further than it would have normally...end result was that big hook hooking into my finger & i caught the weight to stop it from pulling down further & the skipper saw what happened & as i pulled that weight back onto the boat he cut the line & said... " here drink this" so i took a good swig of this spirit that was close to 100% proof but it calmed me & i looked over to the other guy who was sharpening a knife....he got it nice & sharp as the skipper cut the end of the hook where you tie the line to & by that time to skipper gave me the bottle & said " drink how much you want to". Then the other guy poured the spirit over the knife blade & some on my finger & then cut my finger in a X pattern & took the rest of the hook out. I cant remember what that spirit was but i hardly felt a thing & my finger was bandaged & the skipper asked me if i needed to go home & i said NAHH m8 ... so we continued to fish after i had a rest...end of story.... The moral of the story is...." Keep your eye on the spool.... or you'll end up lookin like a fool :)
Não entendo muito, menos sei ingles(muito menos portugues) mas o cara é tão bom e gesticula tanto que entendi como tirar a garateia sem dor(além da que existe). Um aprendizado importante já posso precisar um dia.
GoopgaGaming not with the short shank on a treble hook, then you have two wounds and potential places for infection and cutting a hook is a lot harder than it sounds and most people don't have anything with them to cut it even if they could. This tutorial is designed to show the option that is easiest to accomplish with what you have available.
KayakBassinTV I got hooked by a worm hook one time, I pushed it through clipped the barb off and pulled it right out, And then sterilized the wound, I was just stating that there is another way about doing this.
Chad Hoover I had a treble get stuck in between my pinky and ring finger on my right hand. My wife was in the other kayak. I had her come over and cut the line to my rod. I ended up having to force it through my skin and clip it lol wife was no help haha. I carry a heavy set of wire snippers just for this situation. I tried your way and that sucker was NOT gonna come out. The barb was grabbing too much meat.
I have a small kit that I usually carry to make doing this easy. For this video, I didn't have it with me and it was nice to show how to improvise. I am filming in Florida this week, so I will shoot a second part of this video where I hook myself and demonstrate how to remove the hook with close ups on the set up. I will also show how to make a easy kit to carry in your gear bag.
Not sure if anyone has said it yet but wouldn't braid be better? Haha what's one more time asking? Great vid, thanks for sharing and how to make do with what you have on hand.
Hi. My friend and I went fishing the other day. We had a lot of problems with the fish swallowing the hooks, or in the case where the hook was imbedded in the gill. We were having trouble getting the hook out. We're just beginners, but I've been trying to find a good video of how you are "supposed" to pull the hook out. Could you give us any advice or post a video showing how to do it?
that looked so easy. i hooked my hand once and i was scared it would do something bad when i pulled it out so i slit my hand with a razor and then pulled it out of the cut. I wish i knew this before
Just had a treble hook snag my left hip. had to push both hooks though and pinch the bard to get out. I tried tugging on it. Didn't work. Maybe I was too wussy to yank it out. But it was on an area FAR more sensitive than my hand.
This happened to me while pike fishing, I had a large treble hook embedded in my thumb plus it was still attached to a large pike which wouldn't stay still, it was a painful experience I won't forget, my friend managed to get hook off the lure so we could unhook the pike, I took the hook out by turning it and popping the barb back out my skin in a different place then cut off the barb... Ouch
Pike spit the hook in the yak into my left palm. Using my forceps (intended to remove hooks from fish) were causing undue pain; pedaled over to two other anglers for moral support. Listening to them talk I was able to back out hook without pain...just needed the distraction..
Oouch! I almost felt that! I've had a smaller in a finger. That guy talking was shaking but too. he looked nervous like three guy with the hook. lol. 😥
"Talk to the angler to keep him distracted" - he was plenty "distracted" by the time that guy yanked the hook. Ideally, you should use braid if you have it. I've got 30 lb. braid on several of my baitcasters and have yanked a few out with that quite easily. Except for the 5/0 treble hook I got buried, and I mean buried, in the top side of my right wrist with a 5 lb. bluefish attached, in the kayak. That mess required a little surgery and 5 stitches. Doesn't stop me from going out again!
When I was about 17 I got a treble hooked on the tip of my finger which was attached to another treble deep inside a pike. Managed to dehook the pike with one hand and put it back in the water by myself. Later in accident and emergency the nurse said she was going to cut the hook to make it easier to remove but in the end just yanked it out. Pretty sure she did it deliberately.
I got a hook in my finger years ago and had to drive to the hospital for a removal surgery bcs the hook was too deep in my muscle and was rusty too... The doctor pushed the hook through my finger, so he could cut off the top and barb. He said that was the best way to remove it. 🤣

how dramatic.
Thats awesome
I'm a doctor in a ER and this technique worked great. Thanks. AND don't pull on "3". Pull on "2". Thanks for sharing this.
Dude in pain's thought bubble: "Can you stfu and take the hook out!"
😂😂😂
Nah there's no pain anymore at that point :)
I know..... Already healing lol

Thank you!
Thanks brother, I appreciate that
Thank you. I was in a bind today. Your vid saved a trip to the emergency room!
I could have gotten it out a lot faster, but I was trying to get him to look away. I finally just went ahead and jerked it out. Besides, he wasn't really going anywhere..... :) He did do a great job and this little accident turned into a great opportunity to demonstrate the hook removal technique.
Great mentor obviously. Being able to remember this stuff and carry it out with such fluidity is very admirable. Nice work and thanks for the how-to
Nice job
Or you can cut his hand off and use it as bait.
Chill lol
shark fishing only
or you can just not fish
"or you can just not fish"
Minus the fact that almost all recreational hobbies, if not all, come with some kind of risk, no matter how trivial....
Lol
OOOOH, that tendon part SKEERED me! But one heck of a job. That was nothing short of AWESOME! The victim was one tough dude I got woozy watching. LOL
I just used your vid to remove two of the three hooks on a treble from my leg. Thanks for the info. This allowed me to continue my day after hooking myself on the second cast of the trip and an 9 inch bass.

Gianca C I've been bass fishing for 4 years fishing in general since I was born and I've hooked myself plenty of time

I followed every step of this tutorial. Not only did I get the hook out but now I speak with a nice Alabama accent.
Ha! That’s perfect
This video helped me so I know how to get a hook out when I need it.

One of the best demonstrations I've seen to date. Awesome instruction as usual Chad!
Oh my gosh that made me feel weak! I was actually looking for a video on how to remove treble hooks from fish because I've never used lures and want to try.
not sure where you learned this kinda stuff, but it's really awesome. Great job Chad!
awesome vid Chad! Flukemaster is right when he said you're a walking encyclopedia.

I will add that to our shot list for our next shoot. That is definitely something that we should cover, thanks for the suggestion. - Chad
Best hook removal vid I've seen on YT. Now can you bee with me every time I fish just in case i get a hook stuck in me?
Yes, just look this video up. LOL
From the guy that doesn't even have his own TH-cam Channel name. Fraud.
The guy who removed that hook handles that like a gangster. Very good and helpful tips to save a lot of misery from doing it wrong.
I hope I never need it, but you are one hell of a hook removal expert,
This is EXACTLY why I replaced ALL the trebles with circle hooks....... It also makes the lures almost weedless, and you get to release healthier fish too! But thank you much for sharing because I do still fish with folks that won't make the switch.
Thanks for the feedback. That really was the point. To save time, money, pain and most importantly the rest of the fishing day. - Chad
Understatement at :43
"Chris has got a pretty good hook in his hand."
lol
Hi from 7 years ago!
Watched this vid A year or two ago and always kept the knowledge in my head and never thought it would happen to me but the other day has to use it to get a treble out of my thigh
had one in my finger today hit a tendon but i relaxed the finger and it let loose from the tendon luckily. Nice video.
Basically, in this situation (which I've been in multiple times) I would push the hook point through, including the barb, and then cut the hook at the base of the treble and slide it out. Less painful and damaging. I went back to fishing both times.
Your vids are great. I have learned so much
Thank you. Glad you like them
Great tip have never seen this been done well worth the watch. Thanks
Started with confidence... Slowly started to get nervous about pulling it out... Soon as it was out, confident yet again!!!
Was confident the whole time. Pulled out hundreds, it’s just tougher to video it while having yourself in one kayak, the other Angler in another kayak and then the camera guy in another kayak. Confidence was no problem, coordination, that was another story. Lol
Great technique!! Have had to do it a couple of times. Learned how from Bill Dance show years ago. Again, good job!
Wow! The kind of friend you want on every fishing trip
Thanks for sharing....I just subscribed to your channel and trying to learn how the ins and outs of Kayak Fishing
That fella knew his stuff and made it look easy.
Great video well done! That same thing happened to me as a kid from a bass I caught that was flopping around, but I ended up going to the hospital!!
The ending was cool lol nice video
Barbless is a good approach..... Happy fishing !!
Pushing the barb out is the correct way without risking tearing any tendon inside. Use ice to numb the area first, sanitize the hook too.
I snipped off the barb and pulled it out... ; >)
Great advice and simple instructions
It works I have done it 2 times comes out easy that's for the tip the first time
I had a doctor tell me on 3, 1,2,3.
Ahh What the hell you pulled it on 1!
I wasn’t ready doc.
Good you weren’t suppose to be he reply’s.
Nice job Chad great instruction, thanks.
As always, great video brother!!
Mono has lots of stretch and doubling it up does help with that. But if you have braid that's the best way to go because it has 0 stretch and all you have to worry about is the line breaking which is un likely.
Good tip on the tendon grab!
Good video, I personally bend in my barbs so if I get hooked it would slip right out. Sure more fish get away, but damn I hate getting hooked lol
I just had this happen to me yesterday on the Caney Fork. I wish I would have known this trick before! I had to push the treble hook back out of my hand so my buddy could cut the bard off with my rusty needle nose. I never want to do that again!
awesome video keep up the good work
Another option. Rather than the line holding the shank down, and the bother of setting that up, just put a finger on the hook shank and press it down onto the victim’s skin, and jerk the business end of your rescue line. A little bit simpler.
Good info video though. This trick works.
that was awesome.. it looks bad but that was so simple how you did it.
OK, so... my Dad always taught us (assuming it's a barbed hook) to push the hook through, snap off the barb and point, then back it out. Does this make sense? Sound right to me, but I've never had to do it. Thanks.
Good video. The angle it is embedded might make a difference in technique used. Only one I've had experience with we pushed it on through after cutting the eye off.
Where were you at when I had the same damn hook in the same damn spot last year....?
This happened to me in the middle of nowhere and after a few minutes of sitting there with a hook in my hand, I resolved that I had to push it all the way through my finger and cut the barb off. It took some balls to do it, but it worked. Healed in a few days.
Awesome video guys
The moral of the story is...." Keep your eye on the spool.... or you'll end up lookin like a fool :)
worked like a charm
Thanks!
Outstanding! "This trick is going in the tackle box'!
Não entendo muito, menos sei ingles(muito menos portugues) mas o cara é tão bom e gesticula tanto que entendi como tirar a garateia sem dor(além da que existe).
Um aprendizado importante já posso precisar um dia.
He only had 1 part of the trebble hook in him, Another way is to turn the hook push it out of the skin, Cut the barb off, and pull it back through.
GoopgaGaming not with the short shank on a treble hook, then you have two wounds and potential places for infection and cutting a hook is a lot harder than it sounds and most people don't have anything with them to cut it even if they could. Aarons117 . I always take pliers fishing, but I just use them to jank the hook out instead of making another hole.
I did that and it is so much more painful to push the barb out and cut it off and the hook was only a little size 4 crappie hook
This is just Pure Awesomeness!!! 💪💪
That smooth as silk!!!
Great info, Thank you guys. Fish On!!!
Man, Chris is patient!
I have a small kit that I usually carry to make doing this easy. For this video, I didn't have it with me and it was nice to show how to improvise. I am filming in Florida this week, so I will shoot a second part of this video where I hook myself and demonstrate how to remove the hook with close ups on the set up. Barbless hooks from now on! That made my toes curl 👍
I seen a video of a hook in someone's eyeball😵
Wow exalent idea good work
Thank you
Not sure if anyone has said it yet but wouldn't braid be better? Haha what's one more time asking? Great vid, thanks for sharing and how to make do with what you have on hand.
Nick Tucker no one else mentioned that
Braid will cut you pretty easily though
Hi. My friend and I went fishing the other day. We had a lot of problems with the fish swallowing the hooks, or in the case where the hook was imbedded in the gill. Great technique! Awesome info👍👍thk u
I love fishing
that looked so easy. i hooked my hand once and i was scared it would do something bad when i pulled it out so i slit my hand with a razor and then pulled it out of the cut. I wish i knew this before
100% I did this yesterday and it work...
I was 12 and had to work a large treble hook out of my father's hand. I used wire cutters and then pushed the pieces all the way through. Memories...
Like Negan would say: "Takin' it like a Champ!"
Extreme Weather My Man! 👌
Thanks for the video because of it I got a jerkbait outta my arm and gotta keep fishing for those wonderful spotted bay bass over here in San Diego CA
Love the video 📹
Just had a treble hook snag my left hip. had to push both hooks though and pinch the bard to get out. I tried tugging on it. Didn't work. Maybe I was too wussy to yank it out. But it was on an area FAR more sensitive than my hand.
I havent hooked myself in 20 years. I dont know what prompted me to watch this but now Im pretty nervous about my next time out now.
Just go ahead and do it to get it over with, then use this video technique to remove it and it will boost your confidence
😂😂😂😂😂
@@ChadHooverFishing Good point, Chad. Im meeting my brother in law out there friday night. Ill be casting a crank bait in his general direction.
thats man right there is a fishermans best friend
This happened to me while pike fishing, I had a large treble hook embedded in my thumb plus it was still attached to a large pike which wouldn't stay still, it was a painful experience I won't forget, my friend managed to get hook off the lure so we could unhook the pike, I took the hook out by turning it and popping the barb back out my skin in a different place then cut off the barb... Ouch
Put several long strands of 65 lb braid in my first aid kit on my boat just in case!
A piece of 80# mono works much better, won't cut you.
Great video!!
not sure why recommended. Glad it was
I am sittting in a hospital with a treble hook stuck in my arm while watching this video
LEGIT video!!
Pretty sure she did it deliberately.
hahaha
I got a hook in my finger years ago and had to drive to the hospital for a removal surgery bcs the hook was too deep in my muscle and was rusty too...
The doctor pushed the hook through my finger, so he could cut off the top and barb.
He said that was the best way to remove it. 🤣
That’s what I would say if I was getting paid to remove it too. 😜
