- I got caught! ( Lure Fishing Fail ) - Trying to quick handle and release a crazy kicking Grunter. Luckily I was carrying the best tool for the job. When pushing the hook through, get some resistance on the other side. I have seen an apple used before to good effect, as you are pushing it against something semi solid, so your skin doesnt stretch as much = more pain...

I crush my barbs when fishing from a kayak after hearing another kayak fisherman's story of hooking himself in the back and getting hooked to his kayak seat.

Good job mate, never a great feeling, even worse when ya young fella gets stung with a couple of trebles. lipgrips and plyers, I have learnt the hard way myself. Love ya work John!
Great video, I can relate! Got one treble in the side of my finger once as my kayak accidentally slid down a hill and I tried to catch it! Turns out a lot of nerves in there lol. You did a lot better than I did, way to stay calm and collected and cheers for even smiling about it!

0:34 that moment your brain catches up with the fact you have caught a fish and yourself. Last time I did that was on a thumper whiting and 95 Splash prawn with 2 of 3 hooks in the heel of my palm. Punching the hook through was excruciating. Loving the videos John. My young blokes get up each morning to check if you have uploaded a new one.

Your much more stoic than me. I did the same after hooking the wiggliest Bluebone some year's ago with no pliers or tools. 40c heat and about a K from my fishing mate on the beach. Never forget that one.

So many videos on TH-cam about how to hook fish but not many about how to unhook a human. This is likely to happen to all of us if we fish long enough. Unfortunately I’ve had it happen to me more times than I would like to remember. The worst time being four of the nine barbs from a 7 inch Rapala. The air was blue that night. If you have someone with you it can be much easier to deal with. I always try to take the hook off the lure and use the quick pull out method. It’s a good reminder to carry cutters and a first aid kit with you in the boat.
Just got a treble hook in my leg today unfortunately didn’t have anything to just the barb off with so I ran into the hospital quick but definitely work to keep some kind of cutters with you and not just pliers

Been there, done that. Haha. It absolutely sucks during the process but all you can do is smile after it's out. All part of the memories mate. Well done!

Just got hooked with a crank bait today it going in doesnt hurt much pushing it through the other side is what hurts so bad especially if you have tough skin
Well done. Got a treble in my hand out at the Perth fads about 7 years ago, right in the middle of my palm, underneath but not penetrating the tendon / ligament of my ring finger. 6 hours and a local later, and she was ripped out and medicated at my doctors suggestion of a solid intake of piss and cones for the next 12 hrs, then sorted. Lots of swell and the boat slamming around for a good hour and a half on the way home and I was well over it.
PS wish those barbs were crushed that day

That hurt to watch John...
A trick I was shown & have used a few times with great success is to loop some heavy mono around the bend of the hook & either have someone hold the line or tie it off as it has to be taut. The next step is to tap down hard on the taut line with a heavy screwdriver or similar & the hook just pops out barb & all, the same way it went in. It’s like magic how well this works & with minimal pain or damage.
I've always managed to push down on the barb and pull the hook back out from where it came. Hurts like a hell but the pop as it comes out is the most amazing endorphin rush of all time 🤣
I've been self hooked twice, the first time was one the water in my Yak, it was winter here in vic so it was freezing and i just pulled the 5/0 out with very little pain, but the next was one of my offshore lures still connected to the rod and when I picked it up it slipped and the big treble went into my finger, just like you I now carry 2 types of cutters in my car boot just for hook removal, I found removing the hook from the lure can make it far easier to remove the hook in ones self, I just remembered another, this was a subiki they are so hard to pull out you just have to push them through.

Damn John! I’ve had to do the same. For some reason they seem to go in so easy and are much harder to push through. I hope it’s ok and didn’t get to infected.
Johnny Johnny, will just leave it a that mate. so pleased u had a set of bolt cutters. for me in the boat a permanent set of ratchet side cutters and for land base i carry a set. everyone who has lure fished has had this happen. hope all is well.

Funny thing is I used that same one got hooked in Perth Australia I was on a trip with my dad and I tugged to get the fish out it hooked my finger half way thru
the first time i caught a fish on one of those treble hook lures i wondered how the heck people safely get them out of the fish while they're flailing around. everytime i hooked a bass or something they'd flip around and hook themselves again with the other treble. never got comfortable fishing those lures because of removal lol
Us lads have all done it mate! Stood on a treble after a decent dogtooth tuna spat it! Now I run singles only 😂, nabbed by a fish that isn’t quite finished in the finger or hand! Feel that pain! yeah mate, no fun hooking yourself. I've been fishing for over 40 years and just last year during a hot whiting bite I ended up with a hook in my arm. Just missing that big vein they take blood out of. Amazing how they go in so easy but when you try and push em through they just don't want to pierce the skin. Some decent cutters are a must, never thought I'd have that happen to me. Great vid

Mate, I've been hooked and it's surprising how tough your skin actually is! Trying to push the hook through your skin, I was not as quick as you and had to use plires to push down the skin on the other side of the hook to get the hook all the way through. But I did it the same way you did.

I cut the treble at the base and push it all the way through. Many of the lures I use have smaller trebles and doing it your way would be almost impossible.
You can use a piece of braided line and hold it at a certain angle and the hook will pull right out. I've seen it done with a massive treble hook and couldn't believe it. Tacticalbassin have a video on it

I HAVE A PAIR in both my bream and bass bag John, last year had to show the team at Redcliffe Hospt, how to remove a hook and they were great full.

It should be standard procedure to crush the barbs, not only in case you do exactly this but It’s kinder to the fish, yes you might lose the odd fish but it’s worth it in the long run.

I went fishing 2 days ago and it was like my 3rd time, I hooked myself in the ring finger, but it was like 2mm before I would've had the re-hook in my finger, so I could just pull it out, still hurt :D

Great video champion, what do you do if it can't be pushed through , i had a single hook go into my hand below the finger after a eel got wrapped in the wire trace and wrapped up my hand after removing the hook and i got caught by the hook as it twisted, and had to get it surgically removed, luckily my friend put his foot on its head stopping it from tearing the skin, i have seen the removing method using braid to yank the hook out but had no luck as it was in the tendon, love how cool and relaxed you kept, i was freaking out , bought back bad memories , but great video,

I've always carried something to cut hooks.
When I was a kid I was tying a knot and it slipped end got myself in the lip.
Lucky we had side cutters to cut the eye off a bait holder hook and push it through.
Had to do this in my face the other day LoL 😂

Happens to the best of us. Happened to me to the point where barb had gone right through and came out the other side of my hand and stupidly we tried a few different methods to yank it out in reverse. LOL....Didn't come out. Then we realised that it would be much smarter if we just snipped the hook and out it came- as you did. Ahhh good times!!!

I crush barbs always on lures. No tools required to remove and pain free. I’ve only done it once to myself.
I’m gonna have to make the change at some stage. I used to do it for my bass lures. Should make it happen now the hood are bigger

I feel your pain the only time i have been hooked by a treble i got one point stuck in my thumb one in my index finger and one in my middle finger when a carp decided to take my bass lure fishing for Australian bass it wasn't fun at all
Been there I had to push mine thru thumb was on my own too then try cutting the treble off when it in your right hand and your right handed less strength

I couldn't imagine having to do that to myself Johnny but when there's no other option... you got to do, what you got to do. So glad that Grunter didn't go nuts when you let go of it to hit the spot lock, makes that saying you have seem not so funny in this instance, "Jack fishing it hurts so good".

haha just got one from 55cm lure in my finger few days ago. it sure does hurt. not long enough to go all the way through with the barb. so ripped it back out with the barb the way it went in. good times!
I did this to my thumb the other day just tying it on the line... Worst part is I play guitar so I have a lot of callus. It took all of my strength and willpower to push it back out. Then, to make things worse, I only had the little side cutters on my fishing pliers to clip it with. No easy task…

I did it on Frazer at the start of the yr..couldnt get it out. Ambo on the island had it out in minutes thank christ else i was going another with a treb in my thumb cause i wasn't leaving.

another reason for going barbless mate I always barb my flatty/bream hardz for this very reason....worst I had was a metre+ kingy bury two barbs of a treble into my foot through my crocs...the kingy had the back treble right down its gob prick of thing came in green going spastic on the deck pushing the hooks deeper in my foot....took forever to get an angle on the pliers to de hook the king choked it deep!.... ended up giving it the KO then sacrificial beheading...after all that effort next came hacking through the crocs to see how deep the hooks went in...they buried deep but luckily pointed down instead of up so I was able to jam em back through my foot to crush the barbs..luckily the adrenaline was flowing because the trebles were heavy duty GT size trebles and it kinda looked like a hospital surgery job... the fish were biting though... so it was fish on... took a deep breath and pushed em through as fast as I could.....spent another 15 min crushing the barbs with shitty long nose pliers lol was frustrating as....especially with sound of good kings crashing bait in the distance!...after I finally got those barbs crushed it ended with a look away 5 count as I ripped it back through...the deck was a blood bath....kingy blood n my blood all over the place....neither of us won....I owed though... ripped plenty of lips over the years sometimes karma's a bitch!...we all gotta give a blood sacrifice even if we C&R?....always barbs my hooks now...also had monster flatties take a run through my legs on the flats... nothing like wading back to shore with a crocodile attached to your legs!.

Mate rokkit's hook in the finger was GNARLY, and attached to the thrashing end of a tuna no less. First time I've ever seen the man swear and for good reason 😨
