The moment you brought up LOST, I knew what you were gonna talk about. Kind of a stretch because surviving a desert island is a relatively common trope in fiction.
Lord of the Flies, Swiss Family Robinsons, and The Blue Lagoon to name a few more trapped on an island stories. This dude is huffing paint standing in front of a corkboard with random pictures and making connections where ever he wants. Basically the Always Sunny meme with Charlie in the mail room.
When they said “Tom Hanks changed Pokémon Forever,” I thought it meant that Tom Hanks had a favorite Pokémon and he later decided to change his favorite Pokémon to a different one…
The series was conceived by Lloyd Braun, head of ABC at the time, while he was on vacation in Hawaii during 2003 as a television adaptation of the 2000 Tom Hanks film Cast Away, crossed with elements of the popular reality show Survivor.
Cast Away is based on a book called Robinson Crusoe which also happens to based on a true story that actually happens to be a story of my great great great (honestly don’t know how many greats, just that I have a very old newspaper clipping about him, Alexander Selkirk) so if you want to go that far, Tom Hanks didn’ cause that, the book Robinson Crusoe or even my long deceased grandfather did
Orson Welles change Pokemon forever because the movies he made inapired many directors to use dynamic angles that cast away used. See, how dumb this sounds. It nice to see the connections of old and new but to say that the old are directly responsible is idiotic at best
Of course it sounds dumb, because you didn't even mention that if the American School of the Air didn't give Welles his first radio job he might not have gone on to be the influential filmmaker that he became. Obviously without the American School of the Air is what fundamentally changed pokemon forever.
Not really, Lost wasn't just loosely inspired by the movie it was literally made & developed as a TV show version of it & was directly based on that character, which is half the name of the entire thing lmao
Funny thing is Pokémon is oddly relevant to the Kevin Bacon game. If you want to connect actors from one country to another, how do you do it? Well, Pokémon tends to be dubbed into a lot of languages, but critically the mon voices tend to be original audio. So via Ikue Ōtani and Megumi Hayashibara, you can reach just about anywhere.
Wow okay I had no idea thats where it came from, I'd always just assumed the "lock" part was because once the character dies they're "locked" out, and the "nuz" part came from "null" or something since you do it until none are left or you win. Very fun fact, thank you!
Tom Hanks "came up with" Castaway as much as Daniel Defoe with Robinson Cruesoe or Homer's The Odyssey. The idea of a plot involving being stranded on an uninhabited island is not exactly new.
Oh shit I made a comment saying that Robinson Crusoe was first but I totally forgot about homers odyssey holy shit. My literary knowledge is weak as hell. At this point I’m almost guessing that there’s an even earlier example of this trope in ancient literature. Does Gilgamesh ever get stranded like this?
Its also a coincidence that Locke's character in LOST was on the plane because he was going a "Walkabout" in Australia, which is basically what Pokemon is about. Just, with the addition of magical creatures.
This reminds me of how Doctor Who ironically gave us superhero movies. Patrick Stewart met one of the companions at the time when they were in a theatre show together, he asked her why she did "trash science fiction television" and she said it was a fun experience. That conversation later led to him accepting the role of Picard on Star Trek TNG, thinking it would be a quick buck with not much star power behind it. After the second season, he convinced McKellen to try out for similar roles. The two would eventually be cast in the X-Men films together, which became one of the first multi-film superhero franchises. Paving the way for Spiderman and eventually the MCU.
I'm assuming it was later evolved *into* a Nuzleaf, but that, my friend, was a Seedot.
True
Seedlocke
Exactly what I was gonna say
Oh it did evolve, but it died tragically before it could become a Shiftry.

Lost had nothing to do with cast away
He changed the Pokemon community forever
Important info
Very true there

Yep.
He also visited an infamous island several times.
So Tom Hanks did nothing directly related to the creation of the Nuzlocke challenge?
Nor indirectly. Survivor was the inspiration for lost
"It makes sense!"
Watched it 3 times and still wondering how this guy could possibly reach this hard smh

It's a classic for a reason.
Lost was inspired by the reality show “Survivor”, not by Cast Away. Video poster is a dud.

Underrated comment 😂
Those are a lot of really really loose connections that aren't even necessarily connections.

Fascinating? Bruh cmon

So the conductor from the Polar Express and Woody from Toy Story sorta made nuzlockes?
I guess

He at least indirectly inspired the name for them
Wait Tom hanks was the conductor?
as well as the guy who went to epsteins island
Bruh this is some mental gymnastics right here.
This is one of the most bizarre butterflies I've followed.
Even Monkey D Luffy would have difficulty stretching as hard as this guy’s doing….
Castaway did not inspire lost in anyway, lost is a sci-fi show and castaway is a realistic adventure movie

@S_xBobOmb Orson Welles is the father of modern cinema. Quite literally, neither of Lost nore Cast Away would exist as is without his work.
In that case, Tom Hanks mom initiated the Pokémon Nuzlocke world by giving birth to Tom Hanks.......
Sounds like your rent is due

Such a shame Ben didn't recognize the bus meme, he could've made great use of the rainbow

I can't believe Nuzlocke was 2010 I honestly thought it was older.
As soon as I heard “John Locke” I knew this would be about the Nuzlocke comic lol
The stranded on an island concept existed long before the nineties.

That's a pretty tenuous connection.
Its also a coincidence that Locke's character in LOST was on the plane because he was going a "Walkabout" in Australia, which is basically what Pokemon is about. Just, with the addition of magical creatures.
