Tom’s early life was nothing sensational. He was just a boy from Florida who fell in love with music as a way to escape a difficult childhood. It wasn’t until he formed The Heartbreakers that the world took notice of his talent.
They released several hit singles with album sales of over 1 million. Their success meant plenty of contract squabbles. Record labels wanted to hold all their royalties and gouge customers with high prices, but the band managed to overcome these issues.
Tom claimed he wasn’t a man who could make friends easily, but he became close with almost everyone he collaborated with. Bob Dylan and Stevie Nicks saw him as a wonderful talent and a genuine person and were shocked at the news of his death.
Tom was already in agonizing pain before The Heartbreakers began their 40th-anniversary tour. He’d suffered a hip injury during rehearsals. He was too proud and dedicated of a performer to cancel any shows and powered through over 53 performances.
By the time he went home at the end of the tour, he was found passed out and in cardiac arrest and declared dead at the hospital. His death was ruled an accidental overdose with fentanyl as the primary culprit.
No one will ever know whether or not hip surgery could have prevented his overdose. He already had a history of substance abuse and mental health issues, but it would have at least relieved his pain.
Tom’s music continues to influence the world to this day. His band also continues to play, knowing that he’d want them to continue his legacy of doing everything in his power to please his fans.

For me, Tom Petty was one of those musicians who I didn't fully appreciate till he was gone. I liked several of his songs but I didn't have any of his albums. But his death really shocked me and I started listening to all the great material of his that I had been missing out on all those years. He had one hell of a career in an industry full of one hit wonders, also rans, and never was'. He actually gave up his life for his fans, considering how his last year transpired. He was a true artist and deserves respect for it.

I like so many others am a true fan. Although as a teenager not necessarily recognizing his influence.
As the years rolled by my attention increased consistently.
Affordability and working to earn a living were always a barrier.
Missing some tour stops I eventually made my first while on a trip to New York City.
Steve Winwood was the opener and it was one of the most important shows I ever attended.
Sitting behind my wife and I was David Geffon at this event.
We had the opportunity to see him and the Heart Breakers in Ottawa merely months before his demise.
Of course his influence remains and always will .
The band that I myself play with always get enthusiastic comments especially on the tune Mary Janes last dance.
      RIP friend. I miss you

I always loved Tom Petty's music. It was very popular when I was in High School.
Tom Petty really cared about his music fans. It showed when he fought to keep the price on his one Album low knowing fans couldn't afford the higher price. Not many professional musicians would do that.
It is a shame he suffered so much in his final part of his life. His hip condition would have been extremely painful. But, again he probably endured the pain to perform for his beloved music fans that meant so much too him. May he rest in peace. He will be remembered for many years to come.

Definitely one of my most favorite people in music was Tom Petty. That unusual voice of Tom's was a hallmark in rock music. All of his songs tell of themes that I can relate to in my life. Knew he had some health problems, he never let it stop him from being the best he could be.

Fentanyl is an extremely potent drug. I've been on the fentanyl patch for over 8 years Due to bone/Blood cancer and compound fractures on my spine. I'm sure Tom was in incredible pain for him to load up on so many drugs on top of the fentanyl. Rest in peace 🙏

Petty and the Heartbreakers' (Mike Campbell) songs are like scholarly texts to a songwriter: few artists are as great at writing a prechorus and the ability to distill a thought or emotion into spare poetic lyrics. Enigmatic and timeless. Rock on eternally Tom.

When I was a teenager back in 1981 Tom Petty was all over the radio . The Waiting and Stop Dragging My Heart Around with Stevie Nicks would often play on the radio on my way to work over the summer. I still remember those sometimes chilly rainy early mornings 5 am commutes to work in California's central coast Monterey County. I bought my first Hi-Fi system with money earned with my summer job earnings and I would blast Tom Petty And The Heart Breakers music over my stereo system. When I reminisce that year of 1981, Tom Petty's music comes to mind. Greatest year of my youth !

      Singer? Singer/songwriter? Much more?
Played guitar, singing, wrote all guitar and vocals, lyrics, guitar performance, vocal performance, many other instruments as co-compositional tools for furthering the final song structure, piano writing and performance, harmonica writing and performance, etc etc, depends on which song, but even more on certain songs
This is not boyband, "singer", who else do you know in modern rock history who can play a guitar while singing, and accompany a really cool harp (harmonica) riff all of it together? And 100% of it was original, and to Tom Pettys Writing of all three instruments simultaneously.. and made it look like it was easy breezy..yep
Legend, and never before, and never again replicated

❤️ Tom Petty. Saw the Heartbreakers in concert many times and they never disappointed. His albums were journals of his life. Loyal fans knew they were going to be treated to something special when a new album came out. Uniquely Tom.
When he passed I had "Most things I worry about never happen anyway" tattooed on my forearm in small script. Those lyrics always hit home for me because my dad used to say something similar whenever I was worried about something. Tom passed October 2, 2017 my dad passed October 2, 2018

I was a graduate student at the University of Florida(UF) in Gainesville in the mid 1980s and remember hearing stories about Tom Petty when he would visit the town and the club, Dub's on 13th St(SR 441), where he performed in the early years. He told a story of how he had accidently driven his car into a nearby lake(lake Alice) on the campus of UF when he was very young.

been a big Petty fan for decades.. not many recall, or saw, his small role in the movie "The Postman".. but, i still see him on the damn, as he meets Cosnters character.
loved his music, his style, his unique approach.. and it was a sad day when i heard he died, as i couldnt believe that nearly everyone from "The Traveling Wilburys" was now gone. there seemed no end in to the losses we were getting in the Music World, from Artists still what should have been, many more years left in their career and life.

i remember when mtv came on...petty and his gang did some cool stuff then....i have always liked their sound and the traveling wilbury's totally blew me away....in the 80s i made a cassette of petty and inxs, going back and forth between the two for more than an hour....still have it...i think we have just lived through the greatest era that has been or will be for rock and roll...soooo many many fascinating bands from 1960 to 2010....spiritual expansion defined that era...we have now entered an era of mass psychosis where creativity and uniqueness are not and will not be tolerated....so happy to have evolved with the former....

He only ' smoked his brand'.
He never took the fentanyl, until that night that his hip fracture progressed to a full break.

Bummed that I never saw him live. And as someone who has broken both hips in falls, and had surgery to repair them, I can tell you how much pain he had to deal with. Fronting a band for a two hour plus rock ‘n roll concert must require huge quantities of pain meds to get through the show. Tom’s devotion to his fans cost him his life. One can only wonder how his career would have played out had he received timely medical care, including hip replacement surgery.

Loved Petty since I first heard Free fallin' as an early teenager. My heart broke when I heard about his death and I still think it's sad. But the more I learn about his drug-problems the less it seems like a surprise that he died. As far as I understand he was a chain-smoker since early years and he had a lot of drug-problems during all his life. I hate him for not taking care of himself enough during the last year, but I guess he was way too stubborn to do such thing.. ;-( And of course, he didn't want to disappoint us.

People dont realize playing guitar, bass, drums, even keyboards for a living tears up joints, muscles, ligaments and wrecks your body but musicians love it and we endure it because when youre playing, youre creating magic, reaching out to and affecting people and time stands still. Most of all, once you're in it, theres nothing else you can really do as passionately for a living, but you got to leave the drugs and booze alone yall!

If he really had a cracked hip before the tour, how did he pass the physical that is needed to secure insurance for the tour?
Also, the Heartbreakers have not fully performed together since the last tour in 2017. Mike and Benmont did a few songs together. They did not release any new music-those were previously unreleased versions.

    • @sommermartin7374
      @sommermartin7374 ปีที่แล้ว +1

How the tour was insured has always been my question too. I’m not doubting that he suffered issues with his hip. There’s videos of Ferrone helping him on stage and footage of him hobbling off stage. If I’m not mistaken, the autopsy revealed his hip wasn’t broken but needed to be replaced.
Truth is he had acetylfentanyl in his system, which isn’t prescribed because it’s a street drug. He also had other analogs of fentanyl in his system. Along with all that, he had two different benzodiazepines in his system. I highly doubt both benzodiazepines were prescribed. Personally, I think he was back to using and a worn out hip was a great cover.
Tom’s music meant the world to me. It’s the damn gospel in our house. I saw TPATHB five times. He never put on anything but a great concert, and the man never put out a bad record. He was truly one of a kind.

    • @barco581
      @barco581 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@sommermartin7374 exactly. His family put out a story about his hip, he didn't want to postpone the tour and the perceived obligation to his crew and fans, but tours get postponed all of the time and business rolls on-just look at the last few years. Very few articles on his death ever mention the fact that he was also using illegal drugs. If a doctor had prescribed all of this stuff that led to his death, like in the case of Michael Jackson-Petty's wife and daughters would have gone after that doctor hardcore and publicized it. The fact that never happened is pretty good indicator of how this went down. When Stevie Nicks shared the stage with Tom Petty in early July 2019 in London she looked back on it and said he looked very sick at the time-it wasn't just a hip issue. Clearly this wasn't just a case in October of that year when his hip broke one day and he accidently took too many prescription pain killers and overdosed. There was a lead up to what happened. So sad.
And this is just speculation, but I would bet other members of The Heartbreakers saw something was wrong and might have even talked to Tom or tried to help in other ways, but the way that band worked was Tom was in charge. They have probably never said anything out of respect for the family's official account of what happened.

Thanks for your video but I just need to add a couple of things. The Heartbreakers have never played together since Tom's death. Mike Campbell has had his own band for at least 10 years and had been playing with Fleetwood Mac.....and Benmount, and Ferrone have been busy doing their own things ....Benmount playing with Bob Dylan
      and other bands.
In his last interview just days before he died,
Tom said that if anyone of them became terribly ill and could not perform, or, if one of them died, that the band would discontinue.
Also, his emphysema was not that bad otherwise he could not have continued singing and touring. His smoking most likely caused his obstructive lung disease and also played a significant part in his coronary heart disease. I don't know what was wrong with his knees, but most likely arthritis and most likely some knee arthroscopic surgery
could have helped alot with that...at least for several years. The autopsy didn't show any evidence of any meds for coronary artery disease or for emphysema.
I' ve been an RN for my entire life and worked in major NYC medical centers from the OR, medicine, surgery, hospice, research and rehabilitation. If only his doctor had given him prescriptions for narcan and had instructed his wife and family on how to give
Narcan to reverse a drug overdose he might have survived. I have to put alot of blame on his medical team. With that combination of meds he was on, they should have stressed to him the dangers of drug interactions, especially as we get older. They should have convinced him to schedule that hip replacement as soon as the tour was over, or at the least, admit him into the hospital for preoperative testing and some major pain control. He wasn't abusing drugs since he met his 2nd wife, Dana, because she never approved of drug use. She was the one who helped him get off of heroin and any other drugs except weed. Of course as his pain worsened with every show during that last anniversary tour, she knew he needed pain control. I am so glad that she and their dog were with him during that entire tour. This was an accident waiting to happen. Sadly, he had alot of things he still wanted to work on musically and he had a new little grand-daughter he wanted to spend time with. He only had 1 or maybe 2 legal prescriptions for Fentanyl but 1 other prescription was off the street. Maybe it had been cut with morphine or heroin. I've read about him being pretty stubborn and it's likely that
surgery was suggested to him before the tour, but he didn't want to disappoint his crew who had been with him for 40 years, and he didn't want to disappoint his bandmates or, his fans. I remember that Mike said Tom was so unbelievably happy after the last song ( American Girl) was done at the last show. He said Tom was just beaming. I miss Tom and the Heartbreakers
terribly...just like most of his fans do. He was so special. Not another like him.
RIP. You broke our 💔 's.

Thank you for setting the record straight, both as far as clarifying, as many of us know, the Heartbreakers do not continue to perform as the Heartbreakers sadly. Many fans had hoped they would as each year went by but they were always adamant that without Tommy it was pointless to them. Fortunately Mike and his long-time band, Mike Campbell and The Dirty Knobs, (which has been together closer to 20 years now), did start to add in a couple of heartbreaker songs.
Mike was bringing us all to tears the first song or two that he did, and it was obviously very challenging for him to do, both because of what Tom meant to him, and being able to sing one of those songs again it meant so much to him! 💔 And too, he fact that he never had been a singer! But after he worked with Fleetwood Mac and a voice coach during that tour with them, his singing improved. I definitely am not one who thinks Mike sounds just like Tom, though a number of fans have said they think that Mike does. I know a number of years ago there was one song and I can't remember which song now sadly, but in that particular song Mike did sound eerily like he was channeling Tom as I put it at the time . ❤️ But for the most part, I think some people missed Tom so much, that they that they hear Tom in Mike's voiice simply for the fact get my & Tom we're both from the Gainesville Florida area and have been around each other working together closely for 48 years they tended to speak to sound in their speaking voices like one another at times.. some of that comes through whenever Mike would sing. But to say he sounded as good as Tom, or just like him even, is inaccurate at best to me. After all, Tom had been singing ever since he was about 13, singing in bands! And so Tom had 53 years more singing experience.
Another thing that was also stated... I'm just reiterating it in case someone didn't catch it before, Belmont and Steve and Ron all do other projects from time to time. Most recently it was heartening to see that Steve ferroni, drummer for the heartbreakers, play with Mike's band The Dirty knobs on part of their tour! ☺️
Now regarding Tom's state of health. Being an RN you certainly would have knowledge about fentanyl. One thing I wanted to clarify though... There had been a previous comment above, that said that Tom did not use any painkillers on days of his performances, during TPHB's final tour!. That would certainly explain why he had to be, at times, helped up the stairs, to the stage, and used the golf carts to get close to the stage entrance!!
I also recall reading in many different articles that Mike and Benmont both had remarked that once Tom was up on the stage, the adrenaline that one feels doing something that they love as much as he did being on stage singing, and performing for his fans, he felt NO PAIN! Tom had said Iin articles many times, that "he was the happiest in his life, during the time he spent onstage performing for his fans! " They were saying that when he was on the stage during that tour the pain would go away! The adrenaline of doing what he so loved took away the pain!
Tom was able to move around quite well during each performance! Now keep in mind too, that at the time Tom didn't yet have a broken hip , but he did have a cracked hip and knew that he was putting himself at risk to continue to perform on this tour. But before he his hip fully fractured, he somehow did 53 shows! It's unfathomable! 🎩❤️🎸🎶
That being said, one of the statements made in a comment further back here, said that Dana had said that she didn't know that Tom was using fentanyl. That must have really been a shock to Dana when she learned the results of the medical examiner's report! 😢 Dana and Tom's daughter, Adria were present for the medical examiner's report. And they published his findings in a official statement they made on Facebook on the official Tom Petty and Club page of Tom Petty Nation.
It's stated that he had determined that, as has been said, the cause of Tom's death was sadly
      an accidental overdose.
I remember how shocked so many of we fans were to learn that. Others, who were obviously not Tom Petty fans, were quick to judge, and chime in things like... a rocker and drugs it's cliche. I was so furious! 😠 I thought it's nothing like that! Because, as you know, being a fan, Tom many years before,in the late '90s, had become addicted to heroin and absolutely hated it! He wanted to be free of it!
At that time Dana didn't know that he was doing the drug. That was long before they ever married and he kept it hidden from everyone. No one knew he was doing it. It's amazing how well he continued to do tours year after year without anyone seeing any difference in his performances! 😯
When Dana did learn Tom had this addiction, she is the one who, Tom has been quoted as saying time and again, "that she saved his life!" She helped him to get help and he got free of this dangerous drug. And he was free of it since 1999!
I'll never understand why his physician, even if someone was a great deal of pain, would give someone who was a former heroin user, granted 18 years prior, would give Tom,, a drug like fentanyl, when ch is at least 60 times more potent than heroin! 🤨 Seems like a no-brainer that the physician should have come up with an alternative pain RX! Or, as you said, at the very least, also prescribed Narcan!
I too was surprised that there was not some sort of action taken against the physician for such an oversight that could have saved Tom's life potentially! 😲
I have always thought that odd at best! That very point was mentioned by a fan, who was also a physician, a neurosurgeon, on the day that everyone had learned the medical examiners findings. I remember he stated that Narcan should have been prescribed to Tom as well and he thought it very odd that it was missing among the prescriptions that he was taking. He had managed to get a list of the prescribed drugs that Tom had been taking for all of his health issues.
Would it be that unusual for a patient's family to hold such a doctor accountable, for not prescribing the Narcan, that sure sounds to me could have, potentially, saved Tom's life! I realize that's not a given that's why I said "potentially." But potentially is still a whole lot better than no chance!😢 😠
By the way, it wasn't until about a week "after" his final tour, that Tom got a full on break of his hip, which reportedly have been confirmed by his doctor on October 1st of that year and it was in the late hours of the night, which would then be October 2nd, that poor Dana found her husband unconscious and in the state of cardiac arrest. 😢
I remember back after the time of the medical examinwrs report, that she said the pain had become almost unbearable for Tom. 😰
It's do deeply sad how Tom died.😢 And, for what Dana has gone through.😢
