    I had the same RIR roaster, there is no difference between the two
    He was me pet, but unfortunately some days ago a local cat attacked him and his eye got injured, and me and my dad was shocked what to to, because he was our king of family , we treated him always as a baby boy,
    We always gave him intense love and he gave back too
    He knew that he was our pride and joy
    He always used to walk like a king because he was aware about the fact that he is treated as a king of the family
    We have shared very rich memories with him and now he has passed away
    And we are missing him alot
    Even we cant walk , talk, sleep or eat with ease
    He was not only our pet, he being our supportive and loyal partner
    Without him, we couldn't think a single day to live
    He was my and my dads beginning and ending of the day
    We have never thought that we would face this day like this way
    It is heart breaking ,
    I pray may rab heal us soon from this intense pain we have got
    These little creatures fill our lives with intense nature and breath taking joy which lasts for ever!!

    We found a RIR rooster chick while walking the neighborhood when I was living with my parents about 10 years ago. Not knowing what it was, we took it in and raised it. We kept it inside until it was fully grown. He was mean to everyone but me, even as an adult rooster i'd sit him in my lap and scratch his head and he would fall asleep or just sit and hang out. Everyone else he would claw or peck hard! We named him turk turk. He loved to chase our laser pointer like a cat (we had 2 cats) and peck at it. I know they aren't normally pets, but he was my buddy. He didn't even crow when he was full grown until my brother played a sound clip of a rooster crowing, then he did it non stop lol. Looking back, I feel really bad about not having other roosters or hens for him to interact with.

    I have read and heard so many stories that both Rhode island Red hens and roosters are very aggressive and mean to humans and other members of the flock. Sure does not seem to be the case here. Have I misunderstood other people's claims? Great videos and great channel.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can breed for temperment as well as form, I've had Rhode Island Red roosters that actually chased cats and went to ground talons-to-spurs with hawks. They have some Maylay in them and Reds can indeed be tough customers with a poor disposition.

  • @mackilt
    @mackilt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I’ve had RIR’s for about 5 years now, they mainly range before the snow comes, but they get themselves in the coop around dusk, and I lock them in at night, due to predators, which we have many of. I’m wondering this... Is that the only hen...and only rooster? I ask this because I have found that, (and let me try and put this correctly), most roosters tend to have a very a high libido, and although very diligent in their duties to keep the flock safe...can be very demanding with the hens...in the sexual department.
    What I mean is, I would worry about the hens if I only had even 6 hens to every one rooster. So my question is, how is it that he isn’t always accosting her, if she’s the only hen? She looks very healthy, and has all of her feathers. Maybe my roosters have just been...a bit off? I hope I put this across decently, and sorry if I seem crude! Chicken talk...straight up. Look forward to hearing from you!

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No Steve, she has walked away from the flock to visit the goats. We have three coops of chickens and they all free-range, it's a large flock. BUT, you can keep trios of chickens very well together, that's two hens and a rooster. When roosters don't have any other competition, they are much easier going on the hens.

    That is a nice looking Rooster! of the 49 chickens we have, there are 8 or 9 different breeds, 15 are Rhode Island Reds. I find their interaction to be fascinating, most of them are 8 to 9 weeks old, with two Rhode Island Red roosters that are 19 weeks old and 3 two year old Bantams (Two hens 1 rooster) While observing the younger ones, I have found the white roosters, Which are either or both Austra White's and Delaware's. do not like the Barred Rock and Black Australorp pullets. They are fine with the white and red hens, but chase off the black ones. In general, all the breeds pretty much hang with the others of their breed and get along the best with the others of their same breed. Beings this is the case, I am wondering if I will need to keep more roosters then I once thought.
    Also, do you have any tips on selecting what roosters should be kept? Some of the younger white ones are starting to crow, none of the red ones are, not even the two older Rhode Island reds are crowing yet. The white ones that are crowing also have a higher pecking order then the two older Rhode Island reds which are much bigger then they are. Is this a good trait in roosters? I would think those that develop earliest into being what they should be, would be better then those who develop later or not at all. So things such as their crowns being larger, showing signs of strength and crowing would be good indicators they are the best in the flock for reproduction, is this true?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Breeding selection has many wide and varied purposes. IF you are going with a pure line, then physical traits are the most valued alongside coloration. For a backyard flock, roosters are often bred for temperament which best suits owners and hens. For example, in my flock, a rooster that dances before mating and demonstrates no aggression towards keepers would be desirable. Fertility rates can also be tested and are valuable. Each individual flock manager will decide what individuals will best represent the breed and work well in the environment provided.

    They lay darker yolks than other breeds because they contain too much orange color in their skin and legs. Many researchers chose RIR for this reason and crossed them with white rocks to produce the commercial RSL.

    • @FrederickDunn

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Joana, normally, if you are purchasing chicks from a hatchery, they will offer Coccidia vaccinations for pennies, I do suggest that you have that done when buying in like that. IF you plan to use medicated chick starter feed, then vaccines are not necessary. Know the health and history of the flocks you buy in from. Flock owners keep health history and blood testing results. Never get chicks or adult birds from random flock owners. That's the best advice I can provide :) Best of luck!

    I have 49 in my flock right now. around 15 are roosters, I will be butchering many of them, right now they all are free ranging, would it be better for me to put the roosters I plan to butcher in a pen to fatten them up? Would this help with weight gain? they are around 14 weeks now, I plan to butcher at around 20 weeks, if it is better to coop them to fatten them up, at what point should I do this? Thanks in advance.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right out of the gate my first concern will be for your hens... when those roosters become capable of mating with the hens, they will be in high competition with one another and the hens won't have a single peaceful moment. Yes, you need to separate out the roosters and try to keep a ratio of no more than one rooster for each ten hens. Select your absolute best (temperament and physical constitution) roosters as keepers. Also, without access to the hens, the roosters you separate won't be running crazy trying to mate and will actually get along with eath other. I hope that helps and I wish you luck with your flock!

    I have a Rhode Island Red rooster his name is Roosevelt but he chases people he chases my guest I don't know why I don't have Rhode Island red hens but I do have seven hens for him but he still chases people how do I stop him from doing that

    • @FrederickDunn

      Hi Barbara, that's a rooster's personality, each has their own and it's generally revealed very early on. Some small 8-10 week old cockerels will run up and bite people on the hand etc... behavior is genetic. You really can't "train" it out of him as it's actually his personality. I had one many years ago that only went after my mother in law... how I miss that rooster... :)

    I want to have rhode island red chicken. Original RIR or RIW. But i am not sure are they original in Turkey. I can't buy hatching eggs from USA because of Turkey is so far.
    What can i do abaout that. Can you help me?

      @FrederickDunn  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, I'm sorry to say that I actually can't help you all the way in Turkey. Do you have national poultry associations there? We are restricted from sending hatching eggs to other countries, I really don't know how to help you obtain Rhode Island Whites or Reds from this end. Sorry

      Bought 50 R.I.R. chicks through the mail, very good, sturdy, Galant chickens. Only drawback, the roosters yammered all throughout the night and early morning.
      It is a falacy that roosters only trumpet at sun-up.
