I volunteered at an animal rescue center that had chickens. The local government did not allow roosters. One day we heard a rooster crowing which was odd because all we had was hens. It was discovered that the smallest hen we had was now crowing like a rooster. She ended up being named the general. She was the smallest but was very much large and in charge.

She may crow like a Cockerell but she doesn't have the male neck or tail feathers, which is always a give away. Bless her she is sweet, kept coming to you for comfort when her beau was coming on too strong.

The hen coming to you for safety from the excited rooster is so sweet. When my family had chickens, this one hen, Princess, would place herself behind me whenever Sotis, another hen, was bullying her. She learned quickly that I would place myself between them and guard her. They are for sure not as stupid as often portrayed. Chickens are able to perform quite fascinating tricks, and if I get a flock again in the future, I would love to clicker train them. Beautiful, misunderstood creatures.

I spent half my childhood at a farm, and had been taught to give chickens who wouldn't stop incubating a cool/cold bath, which obviously stresses them out quite a bit, but this way just respects their natural rhythms and I love it
Sometimes you have to "reset" them if it's very hot outside and they aren't leaving the nest to drink water. I usually leave them alone, but if they start looking dehydrated then you have to boot them out!!

I'm from a tropical country and that was one of the main annoyances during summer at the farm, and now I think about it, may have been another reason why the bath thing was recommended. There would always be 3 or 4 chickens trying to nest during summer and at that point, it was bucket bath time
Chickens go broody when they hit a certain body temperature and it's easy for it to happen in hot weather. Being broody also stresses them since they'll forgoe food and water in favor of sitting on eggs for days at a time so really it's a coin toss whether it's best to let them stay at it or soak them.
The bath is to lower their body temperature which makes them snap out of it. but you dont have to bath them you can also just put them in another run with food and water and a roost but without access to a nesting place for a few days until they get over it. Thats what i do as i dont have room for more chicks at present.
We do the same. In our country is mid climate so soaking chickens in summer is unessesery bc you can just take them to garage for a while But I think in hotter climate it may be more difficult to cool them down
I've never seen a breed with such a shape. How cute she is. When she felt threatened she ran back to daddy. I wish her all the happiness with her adopted babies.

It doesn't require the absence of a male but it happens more often without one. I've known many flocks that have never had a rooster and never had a crowing hen and I've known flocks that have a crowing hen and roosters. It is however a lot more common and older hens.

I noticed her comb and wattles decreased in size and redness once you introduced the roo. We've had hens at the top of the pecking order behave similarly when we didn't have roosters around
My mom says when she was a child they had a rooster that would fly up on the pasture fence and crow like crazy, then jump down and lay an egg on the ground--every morning! She loved it but it made her father furious!

Apparently, the chicken was challenging his mindset by messing up the well organized gender roles. Her dad must have adhered strictly to gender roles that he couldn't even tolerate mixup from a chicken
Many years ago, when my late mother was a child growing up on a farm, they had a duck who had laid eggs and was sitting on them. Something happened to her, and she died, so my grandmother put the eggs under a nesting hen. She hatched a batch of baby chicks and baby ducklings. She accepted them all as her own. Eventually, the baby ducks found the water with the help on another duck and got in the pond. The poor mother chicken went crazy with fear! She thought her babies would drown! That's all I was told. Your solution was perfect and solved her problem. You, my dear sir, are amazing!
My mini rooster is sleeping on his pillow in my window. I have a whole flock outside and 4 inside for various reasons. Magical personalities when you let them just be. I love my chickens.❤❤❤❤❤

This could be a very enjoyable children's film for kids as young 3. My now grown son would be glued to nature films like this at age and older. I enjoy them too. This one was very well done and entertaining; I liked that there was no talking and the music selection was perfect.
I had a Belgian d'Anver Bantam just like this, called Zelda. She would come when called and would sit on my shoulder. I had her for a long time and was very sad when she died. She was a very friendly dinosaur!
What a journey - a heartwarming one at that. Those little chicks have the best mum - and one that can teach her little roosters how to crow 😁 and teach her little hens how to run to dad when they're not feeling safe. This reminds me of a little bantam hen I had growing up who grew male feathers, a larger comb and waddle, and started crowing after our rooster flew away! She was the sweetest little thing and it was so strange to watch her essentially turn into a rooster😅
It is an example of spontaneous sex reversal which can happen in a few species chickens being one of them. Its pretty rare but usually spured on by the lack of a rooster. Something similar to this happens in lions were females will grow manes and act like male lions when one of the other male lions goes missing.

There are also species that have sexes beyond male/female, along with species that have just one sex and (obviously) still reproduce. I have a little bantam rooster. Their energy is next level, so it's wonderful that you were monitoring them both. He'll pick up all sorts of things (sticks, tiny pebbles, pine straw) and tidbit like crazy to try and impress the ladies. Or course, after a while, they began to side eye his tidbitting since it didn't always involve tasty treats. I've also had some hens that tried to crow. In those cases, it seemed like fussing between old couples, and they were mimicking one another's sounds just to be sassy. Of course, there are multiple reasons that could happen. I'm glad you were able to help your little hen become a mother!
She was very diligent rooster and then when you introduced her to actual rooster she became very responsible mom. There’s no half measures with that girl 😅 I’m glad you helped her with her situation. And it’s cool that chicks have a mom now too!

A crowing hen is incredibly rare. You are a very lucky man, to encounter such a wonderful creature. And that fluffy rooster is adorable too :) The hen looks just like my own small pet rooster. They have the same face, with this cute beard. I felt like I was watching my own chicken. And I would love to see how the family is doing in the future. Great video!
I find it fascinating that sometimes a hen will start crowing and even start to look more rooster-like (growing longer tail feathers, for example), usually when there's no biological rooster in the flock. When you grow up and read about more complicated parts of nature, that you didn't read as a kid, you really understand how many variations there are of life. Humans aren't alone in changing s3x (humans just need the help of medicine or surgery sometimes, unlike some animals who suddenly produce the required hormones themselves), gay partnerships and being intersex / hermaphrodite. It's cool. Makes me so sad to see people of the world deny that it is part of nature, too. How boring would the world be if there was only one way to exist. I wish people got along better.

One of my Buff Orpington hens randomly tries to crow in the mornings. Not every day...but once in a while she surprises me with this crackly, wacky, raspy crow. It's adorable and I love that your gal does this, too.

When humans in the complicated human world start arguing about what's 'natural,' I remember my iguana whom every vet in the world assumed was male until they flipped her over and had a look at her leg pores. She looked male, acted male, grew a big dewlap like a male, changed colors a bit like a male, mounted things like a male... but no male bits, sorry! Humans completely ignore the fact that nature is a muddy place. I love your 'rooster', she operates under her own definition of natural, and ain't nobody gonna stop her from her cute little crows! :D It's also clear she sees you as a big guardian, jumping on you when the rooster was being mean, finding a place near you to brood her eggs, letting you check on them. She already knew you were going to help her out long before you gave her foster babies to love.
We have a couple flocks of Urban Partridges that live in storm channels/creeks by my apartment. We can usually hear them most evenings and early mornings. And sometimes catch them sliding down a lil hill in the winter. Keep on taking most excellent care of those feathered lil buddies!

So we had this little Seabright bantam who was born with a neurological disorder or slight vitamin deficiency. She struggled as a chick and couldn’t stay upright. We weren’t sure what would happen, but with care she powered through, healed up, and grew up to be… the tiniest hen of the flock. Don’t be mistaken. Girlfriend was a beast. She kept everyone in line, protected her sister, crowed, laid small eggs, fought like she was in Thunderdome, and would jump on top of the other chickens that were three times her size and bite their neck feathers like a rooster that was trying to mate or show off. And when she really wanted to be a boss, she would deepen her little voice, redden her face, and drag her wings on the ground. The others would just freeze. When I held her, she would sit on my lap and close her eyes when I pet her head. She taught me many things, and I, to this day, have not even seen a rooster act as dramatic as she.

This is actually a councidence because my english teacher taught us and made us read about "my brothers peculiar chicken " by Alejandro Roces And it was all about finding out about the gender of a chicken wether if it is a rooster or a hen. The chicken can crow can fight other rooosters and had the charactreistics of a rooster so they thought it was a rooster and then it suddenly laid an egg
Ive had a hen be broody for months even with almost daily egg removal. Those extra broody ladies make good mommies!❤❤️ gotta let that couple be together for a little bit for eggs to become fertilized by the rooster.
I have had two hens crow like a rooster. Once in a group of new hens before the rooster reached maturity and the second time after our Silkie rooster died and one of her favorite hens took over guarding the flock.

Thank you so very much for all of your videos. You can only guess how much they make a difference in my life. They are the sweetest tales of new life! I used to have chickens too. We would sneak in at night and put hatchlings under the hen and they would have her scent on them by morning. She wouldn't know the difference and accepted them! The same story for two geese I had. They both were female and did the mating rituals in their little pool. Then they laid their eggs, and they both sat....and sat...on those rotten eggs for the longest time! One night we snuck some goslings under both of them and how their countenance instantly changed! From hopelessly wanting babies to, "Oh, what's that I hear under my wings!" They both mothered those babies equally and what a sight it truly was!
It's not common, but sometimes hens partway through life become infertile roosters. One day they will just start crowing and then they grow larger comb & waddles, as well as adopting a typically male feather pattern including saddle & longer tail feathers. Animals are fascinating ! I love chickens & chicken keeping 🥰😍😘
That was really heartwarming. Go figure I tend to tear up whenever there's a loss of life but in the end it all came together perfectly. I'm very grateful for other kind souls out there where animals can feel safe and protected around. ACCA you are my inspiration. I now deal in poultry conservation and have rescued and raised several different kinds of birds, including a house sparrow. If I had a childhood hero and role model, it would be you. Also, beautiful Belgian Bearded D'Anver! Their looks can be very deceiving and the hens are super tough! I affectionately call my chickens that act like this "transhender" and let them choose if they want to hang out with the hens or the bachelor flock. Does the bird still crow I wonder?
@protect_trans_lives thank you 😊 right now I have 2 birds who were born roosters but spend their day on the nest building the nest and making little happy sounds. They never crow or fight or try to mate with the hens. They seem happy so I just let them be.
We had a hen years ago that would try to crow...she lived to be 16 and I got a little laugh every morning. Because like our noisiest rooster..waited for the door to open and then crow. Our rooster laid eggs for many years. So cute..
That's a cute lady there, i had a pretty bantam chicken that did the same and turned out to be a great mom, she lived 17 long happy years and made me so happy, i really miss her so much.
It's possible it has both genders. Really rare in chickens, but not impossible. The eggs will probably always be infertile, but there's a chance, I think. She still makes a fantastic foster mom though.

And then the pecking at your shirt like she's mad at you for bringing him XD really glad you had someone willing to let her adopt ^^ I think it's interesting how they look like three different species from her, and she's still okay with it. Animals are funky. Some go by smell and reject a different species...or even their own if the smell is wrong. And then we have this chicken and a bit of psychology. The animal kingdom is so fascinating.

The old saying, "Whistling girls and crowing hens always come to no good end" need not apply here. I had a two year old brown leghorn laying eggs regularly and often. Six months after the rooster was killed by an owl, she started crowing and strutting around as a rooster, not laying eggs, and pestering the other hens! Only a few months after introducing four new Roosters to the flock, she reverted back to laying again and her heavy comb and extended wattles shrunk back to normal again before the end of a year. Chickens are pretty amazing!
Well she's not a virgin, she's just (probably) infertile - so if we're going biblical, she's Mary's sister Elizabeth, that had a "miracle baby" through angelic intervention.

I noticed her comb and wattles decreased in size and redness once you introduced the roo. We've had hens at the top of the pecking order behave similarly when we didn't have roosters around

My mom says when she was a child they had a rooster that would fly up on the pasture fence and crow like crazy, then jump down and lay an egg on the ground--every morning! She loved it but it made her father furious!

Apparently, the chicken was challenging his mindset by messing up the well organized gender roles. Her dad must have adhered strictly to gender roles that he couldn't even tolerate mixup from a chicken
Many years ago, when my late mother was a child growing up on a farm, they had a duck who had laid eggs and was sitting on them. Something happened to her, and she died, so my grandmother put the eggs under a nesting hen. She hatched a batch of baby chicks and baby ducklings. She accepted them all as her own. Eventually, the baby ducks found the water with the help on another duck and got in the pond. The poor mother chicken went crazy with fear! She thought her babies would drown! That's all I was told. Your solution was perfect and solved her problem. You, my dear sir, are amazing!
My mini rooster is sleeping on his pillow in my window. I have a whole flock outside and 4 inside for various reasons. Magical personalities when you let them just be. I love my chickens.❤❤❤❤❤

This could be a very enjoyable children's film for kids as young 3. My now grown son would be glued to nature films like this at age and older. I enjoy them too. This one was very well done and entertaining; I liked that there was no talking and the music selection was perfect.

I had a Belgian d'Anver Bantam just like this, called Zelda. She would come when called and would sit on my shoulder. I had her for a long time and was very sad when she died. She was a very friendly dinosaur!
What a journey - a heartwarming one at that. Those little chicks have the best mum - and one that can teach her little roosters how to crow 😁 and teach her little hens how to run to dad when they're not feeling safe. This reminds me of a little bantam hen I had growing up who grew male feathers, a larger comb and waddle, and started crowing after our rooster flew away! She was the sweetest little thing and it was so strange to watch her essentially turn into a rooster😅
It is an example of spontaneous sex reversal which can happen in a few species chickens being one of them. Its pretty rare but usually spured on by the lack of a rooster. Something similar to this happens in lions were females will grow manes and act like male lions when one of the other male lions goes missing.

God has always loved the people and he has the same kind of loving heart for animals too as these man who did this video. We ourselves act the same with our chickens whenever possible. They are aloud to gedge there baby chicks themselves.

I have a little bantam rooster. Their energy is next level, so it's wonderful that you were monitoring them both. He'll pick up all sorts of things (sticks, tiny pebbles, pine straw) and tidbit like crazy to try and impress the ladies. Or course, after a while, they began to side eye his tidbitting since it didn't always involve tasty treats. I've also had some hens that tried to crow. In those cases, it seemed like fussing between old couples, and they were mimicking one another's sounds just to be sassy. Of course, there are multiple reasons that could happen. I'm glad you were able to help your little hen become a mother!
She was very diligent rooster and then when you introduced her to actual rooster she became very responsible mom.

The hen looks just like my own small pet rooster. They have the same face, with this cute beard. I felt like I was watching my own chicken. And I would love to see how the family is doing in the future.

I find it fascinating that sometimes a hen will start crowing and even start to look more rooster-like (growing longer tail feathers, for example), usually when there's no biological rooster in the flock. When you grow up and read about more complicated parts of nature, that you didn't read as a kid, you really understand how many variations there are of life. Humans aren't alone in changing s3x (humans just need the help of medicine or surgery sometimes, unlike some animals who suddenly produce the required hormones themselves), gay partnerships and being intersex / hermaphrodite. It's cool. Makes me so sad to see people of the world deny that it is part of nature, too. How boring would the world be if there was only one way to exist. I wish people got along better.

One of my Buff Orpington hens randomly tries to crow in the mornings. Not every day...but once in a while she surprises me with this crackly, wacky, raspy crow. It's adorable and I love that your gal does this, too.

I have a fantail pigeon who looks like a male and sounds like a female. I used to believe she was a boy until she laid an egg. She is a lady goon and a mommy's little bird now.
When humans in the complicated human world start arguing about what's 'natural,' I remember my iguana whom every vet in the world assumed was male until they flipped her over and had a look at her leg pores. She looked male, acted male, grew a big dewlap like a male, changed colors a bit like a male, mounted things like a male... but no male bits, sorry! Humans completely ignore the fact that nature is a muddy place. I love your 'rooster', she operates under her own definition of natural, and ain't nobody gonna stop her from her cute little crows! :D It's also clear she sees you as a big guardian, jumping on you when the rooster was being mean, finding a place near you to brood her eggs, letting you check on them. She already knew you were going to help her out long before you gave her foster babies to love.

We have a couple flocks of Urban Partridges that live in storm channels/creeks by my apartment. We can usually hear them most evenings and early mornings. And sometimes catch them sliding down a lil hill in the winter. Keep on taking most excellent care of those feathered lil buddies!

When I was a kid, my grandfather would ask us...if a rooster layed an egg on the peak of the roof, which way would it fall?

So we had this little Seabright bantam who was born with a neurological disorder or slight vitamin deficiency. She struggled as a chick and couldn’t stay upright. We weren’t sure what would happen, but with care she powered through, healed up, and grew up to be… the tiniest hen of the flock.

Girlfriend was a beast. She kept everyone in line, protected her sister, crowed, laid small eggs, fought like she was in Thunderdome, and would jump on top of the other chickens that were three times her size and bite their neck feathers like a rooster that was trying to mate or show off. And when she really wanted to be a boss, she would deepen her little voice, redden her face, and drag her wings on the ground. The others would just freeze.
When I held her, she would sit on my lap and close her eyes when I pet her head. She taught me many things, and I, to this day, have not even seen a rooster act as dramatic as she.

I have had two hens crow like a rooster. Once in a group of new hens before the rooster reached maturity and the second time after our Silkie rooster died and one of her favorite hens took over guarding the flock.

I used to have chickens too. We would sneak in at night and put hatchlings under the hen and they would have her scent on them by morning. She wouldn't know the difference and accepted them!
The same story for two geese I had. They both were female and did the mating rituals in their little pool. Then they laid their eggs, and they both sat....and sat...on those rotten eggs for the longest time! One night we snuck some goslings under both of them and how their countenance instantly changed! From hopelessly wanting babies to, "Oh, what's that I hear under my wings!" They both mothered those babies equally and what a sight it truly was!

It's not common, but sometimes hens partway through life become infertile roosters. One day they will just start crowing and then they grow larger comb & waddles, as well as adopting a typically male feather pattern including saddle & longer tail feathers. Animals are fascinating ! I love chickens & chicken keeping 🥰😍😘

That was really heartwarming. Go figure I tend to tear up whenever there's a loss of life but in the end it all came together perfectly. I'm very grateful for other kind souls out there where animals can feel safe and protected around. It's possible it has both genders. Really rare in chickens, but not impossible. The eggs will probably always be infertile, but there's a chance, I think. She still makes a fantastic foster mom though.

Animals are funky. Some go by smell and reject a different species...or even their own if the smell is wrong. And then we have this chicken and a bit of psychology. The old saying, "Whistling girls and crowing hens always come to no good end" need not apply here. I had a two year old brown leghorn laying eggs regularly and often. Six months after the rooster was killed by an owl, she started crowing and strutting around as a rooster, not laying eggs, and pestering the other hens! Only a few months after introducing four new Roosters to the flock, she reverted back to laying again and her heavy comb and extended wattles shrunk back to normal again before the end of a year. Chickens are pretty amazing!
