I only enjoy podcasts where people go off on tangents. That's what makes a lot of shows interesting. There are just as many people out there who LOVE a show where the hosts can carry us on a well-connected and hysterical journey that brings us right back to topic. I fully implore any of you podcasters out there, that if you and your co-host have really good chemistry, please go off topic and make us laugh. I want it to feel like I'm with friends, not being lectured.
This is probably why Ladies and Tangents is so popular. They have their topics, but they section off like 15 minutes for each one, but if they offshoot somewhere else because of it, it usually ends up as a hilarious discussion.
This is so interesting. First this is the first comment I’ve read. And second , this is exactly the type of content I want to share. It’s random all connected and mostly improve with topics that relate. I had a close friend who reached out and wanted to set up a podcast/TH-cam channel with me. We had 100% spot on chemistry. The bantering was hilarious. We had a couple people tell us to set up a TY or podcast because we were very funny. I hope to meet someone similar , who I can develop fun bantering chemistry with. Thanks for sharing. 😊
My advise is to listen to the playback of your own show. If you find something you said, or did to be annoying, your listeners will too. It's very good training to improve the quality of your content. BTW, I'm new to your channel, this is actually my first video, but I instantly subscribed the very moment I saw the title card of your show. Thank you for your service, your content is a game changer.
My pet peeve on some podcasts is when a guest starts talking (and making good points) and the host interjects with “their experience”. In other words, they start talking about themselves too much and it takes away from the guest.
I have a lot of ADHD friends and we all do this so often in an attempt to show we empathize with eachother, but i am aware most people hate it. Gotta know your audience.
Yes, I wonder about this one too, because I'm creating a podcast, and as a listener of others' podcasts, I often actually like when the host inserts relatability -- yet yes, when it takes over, not so good, and as a new host, I will want to watch out for this!
Depends on who I’m watching, but a lot of people talk about themselves like that because they actually relate to what the guest is saying so they’re trying to connect with them
My daughter and I have been doing a podcast for 2 1/2 years. We don't have many listeners or subscribers and we do almost all the things this video says not to do, but we are having a ball and have a growing collection of conversations between us to save for the future.
That's sweet! And can definitely grow, yes, who says that all podcasts need to be seen. Sounds like your daughter may grow into this, and you might too! And yes, what's most key here is the connection you two have and the real conversations being recorded. They will certainly evolove, love it!
Great list! Another annoying thing is when the podcasters just ask another question rather than going deeper on what the interviewee was saying. It's like they don't even recognize what they're saying and totally go into another subject. Either they are just wanting to get their questions answered a little bit, and keep within time and make sure all questions are being asked, or, they have no idea what the interviewee is saying and it's above their head. Sometimes what the interviewee said is so interesting! and then it just drops and moves on to next. I'd rather have a longer podcast cut up in shorter snippets to deepen on subjects. And that's why I'm creating a podcast -- still learning editing at this moment. It's called Technology of Self -- just really getting going now!
Brand new I haven’t even started yet. I am binging your videos. I’m starting very low budget. Doing this with minimal equipment and I have never done anything like this. It’s just me by myself and whatever God has planned for this. I do not have a computer I will be doing it all from my IPhone.
Listening to this I got some very helpful insight and at the same time I realized that people are very picky for something they don’t pay for. But hey it’s the world we live in.
I know, people expect so much of content creators and are so quick to criticize. But I think behind their pickiness is always something to be learned. Once they become your super fans, they’ll buy anything you tell them to 😁

The ones who complain about ads and patreon are the ones you shouldn't care about at all. They don't ad value and their complaints, if taken as advice, will harm a podcast's long term viability and financial health. It's stupid to platform that in a serious way in this video because it's actual bad advice, even with a weak disclaimer after.

Just because you have a podcast, doesn't mean you have anything relevant, important or accurate to say.. The customer's always right... Or you're not going to have any customers. I've joined some podcasts and supported them very early on-then suddenly the priority became 1000 subs, ads, likes, thumbs ups, donations-and the priority & conversation entirely changed. And I unsubscribe. They changed, I didn't. Perhaps when podcast folks would like to ask for donations, instead of giving people just a link to give you money, explain what you're spending the money on. Explain that you're not taking other paid ads. If that's the case. Explain what uniquely qualifies them to be paid for their opinion. What have they got into that podcast? TH-cam is "free"- why you want to be on here -all that exposure for free. You don't have to pay to post your podcasts. You have to share profits if you monetize Some folks come on here simply to share information and knowledge if you want to change your base audience, don't like people complaining that it's not "free", on a free TH-cam website? Then only offer your podcast on TH-cam premium or paid subscriptions. Don't get your marketing and exposure on a free website, for free- where people join because it's free. But it's not free, if you want to put up ads, beg for money, subs or likes because you're asking for something of value to you. And every time we click your video, give a thumbs-up, we're turning our private data over to TH-cam analytics, giving up our privacy to watch your content. For us to donate, we've got to turn over our information to patreon, trustpilot, all these irrelevant websites we have to join, just to give you a couple of bucks? What the hell?! We turn over our TH-cam accounts and give them permission to invade our privacy, look at our videos and comments, to donate? Why don't you make donating less invasive For free or not.
They do pay for it with their time, which they could invest into better podcasts that they get more out of and remember: the choices that they have are immense!
We're 3 months in and the first bit of advice I would give is "know where you're going in the conversation." When you don't know, you end up committing a lot of these annoyances: long pauses, "um"s, lip smacks, tangents, repeating points, etc. Our podcast is guilty of this, so we need to do better at outlining each show.
Seems that just reading directly from Google and/or Wikipedia could be copyright infringement? I like the harsh, honest and straight to the point comments!
Wikipedia is considered non-copyright protected and MOST things can be used without accreditation, as it is not considered an "officially reliable" source because anyone can contribute and edit- I did not realize this. so I looked this up and confirmed it just moments ago!
Obviously I listened to the content of the top 10. But I paid the most attention to the top ten least annoying things about this podcast imo: 1-simplicity/consistent/uncluttered audibly/visibly. 2-"jumped in"to content quickly enough to maintain my attention 3-cleverly broke rule #3 without being annoying 4-subtle, creative editing without being jarring 5-emphasis on quality not loud attention grabs or special FX 6-locked and level eye contact with pro camera set-up. Didnt look fish-eyed or looking off in the distance. Didn't have to look up podcasters nostrils. 6-no distractions that drew attention to podcasters political ideals/regional origin/musical preferences etc. 7-well-rehearsed and natural 8-succinct 9-gave a simple, credible description of his expertise without being hyperbolic 10-spoke with enthusiasm, confidence, and clarity
Great list! I agree with all of them. My big pet peeve is when the host doesn't get to the main topic soon enough. We don't care about the meaningless banter/weather/etc.
Great points... a how-to of what not to do. My goal is to produce a podcast that sounds natural to listeners. (Listeners should never know or even think that it’s edited. A great editor is inconspicuous!) You’re audio effects (compression, shouting, etc) in this were slick. Nice touch!!

Ahhhhh!!!! One of my pet peeves is ongoing music while the host speaks. And you have done this in this video-nonetheless it’s a great episode and I am so happy to have found your channel. I listen to a podcast where the host has such great content but I can barely stand listening because of the super annoying music.
I'm doing an actual play (DC20 a DnD style podcast) podcast, so some of these don't apply...but great video in general, especially the roleplay the scripts, adjusting your pitch, volume, and accent is awesome; Talk loud, whisper close to the mic, throw some gravel into your voice and keep switching (my advice is specifically for fiction and ad reads, not great for a fact-based intellectual podcast)
I will be starting a podcast with a business partner soon, we are realtors. I don’t like the real estate videos in our area that much because there is a limited audience. I have content already written (not AI) as blogs about local history. We plan to tie in real estate loosely based on the topic. I’ve been taking notes on what we don’t like about podcasts, and most were on your list. But the biggest pet peeve is the talking about the weekend, hate that. Very well done, we will watch this video
I appreciate being given the context of the episode at the outset, including that of the presenter/s, so that I understand the nature of what I'm listening to, while I'm listening to it! For example, a beekeeper doing an episode on bee habitats would be very different than a pest control association doing an episode on bee habitats. Even if the content were very similar--what's behind the content would be imbued with a very different ethos.
I didn't even know what a "podcast" is, until now. I've been watching them on TH-cam and didn't know. Thanks for the great info, and getting to the point!
These are all great. One more might be length. So many podcasts are just SO LOOONG (due to some of the annoyances on your list no doubt). If your podcast about a movie is longer than the movie, that might be too long, right? We have a 30 minutes or less guarantee, like a sitcom or old school Domino's delivery.

With regard to this particular one, you covered many of the points that irritate me as well, including the NO EDITING and hosts talking over each other. I have a podcast since 2020 and I stopped around 2022. I decided to retake my show completely renewed and after start to rebuild my audience I decided to go to TH-cam as well. Thanks for your video, it’s very insightful
As I am getting ready to start doing a podcast/vlog for my company really great material here as well as well as refresher as I use as I used to do talk radio in a previous life. Your point about inside jokes is well taken as a friend of mine who had been the morning guy at a major station in our market when I started out told me don’t do what he called “Board Talk” or “Inside Baseball”. I was a great fan of the late Don Imus (Imus in the Morning). A gentleman who called on me said he hated listening to Imus because he felt like the whole thing was an inside joke and if you hadn’t listened to him every day for years, you didn’t get it. Ironically, his wife loved the show. Your point about being scripted is spot on, I was afraid I’d sound like I was reading, so I would have an outline of bullet points that I wanted to talk about, which made it easy to see as well as reference.
Excellent points.. I hate over-talking, running down rabbit holes, self deprecation, noisy kids & dogs barking in background.. and women putting on their makeup while attempting to present on a non- makeup subject.. it’s like the audience is an afterthought instead of their focus😏
What annoys me is mouth clicks and plosives. I'm researching what I need to purchase to avoid this. I spend hours editing out these very annoying sounds. Also, any tips on what to eat/drink or not that will help to avoid these sounds. Thank you.

Great topic. Being brand new to the thought of starting my own podcast, I have one major concern. The thought of reading listener's comments is intimidating to me, but I also know the information and feedback is so important. How can I survive that? LOL
If the comments attack your character don’t even mention them. But if they provide advice or constructive criticism it’s fair game. Remember that every piece of content is market research. Don’t attach your worth to it. You’re so much more than a podcast.

One thing to add -- annoying background music. I'm listening to a really good fiction podcast, but the music is SO jarring in between scenes that I want to fling my headphones.
I think you should contact the host and let him know. We appreciate when people tell us what they don’t like so we can fix it quickly. After all we make our content for our audience to enjoy
I don't mind an ad if it has something to do with the pod cast, like if it's a hobby pod cast and they are being sponsored by super glue....makes sence

Thank you for your consideration for the listener. For me, I prefer no background music while the presenter is speaking. I find it to be a distraction to my ability to concentrate on the topic at hand; thereby diminishing the effectiveness of the overall message.
One thing i hate is when the audio fades in every sentence. Like when the audio goes from not there or really low to normal level audio every sentence that is being said. It's annoy as all he'll and makes it hard to listen to the content.
Ive had my podcast for a year now. I unfortunately wasnt able to be consistent when my dog dog cancer and i was taking care of her. I was watching this and feeling bad that I’ve been inconsistent. But at least Im back to doing it regularly again but every other week instead of weekly. I was feeling bad about my podcast but after watching this…. I cant believe people DONT EDIT?! At all?? Also they EAT FOOD?! During the show?!?! Wow!!! I cringe with every small mouth sound and have to edit them all! 😅 I suddenly feel much better about the quality of my podcast. I wouldnt dare make most of these mistakes! 😳😳😅😅😀 Thank you for this video and the boost of confidence!

I bought some quality used equipment at a pawn shop for musicians. I don't use a phone or a laptop. I do my editing on a desktop with free Audacity software.

This is all so true! Especially audio quality and the need for editing. This is the difference between a pro podcast and a hobby podcast.
I just hate it when the audio is all over the place instead of being smooth between switching from you to talker to somebody you might be interviewing or a media file
I fully agree with being Annoyed when hosts talk over one another. Another pet peeve is when hosts repeat one another 🤦🏻♀️
Ahhhhh!!!! One of my pet peeves is ongoing music while the host speaks. And you have done this in this video-nonetheless it’s a great episode and I am so happy to have found your channel.
I listen to a podcast where the host has such great content but I can barely stand listening because of the super annoying music.
The background music can be so annoying and distracting for me.

I'm doing an actual play (DC20 a DnD style podcast) podcast, so some of these don't apply...but great video in general, especially the roleplay the scripts, adjusting your pitch, volume, and accent is awesome; Talk loud, whisper close to the mic, throw some gravel into your voice and keep switching (my advice is specifically for fiction and ad reads, not great for a fact-based intellectual podcast)
I will be starting a podcast with a business partner soon, we are realtors. I don’t like the real estate videos in our area that much because there is a limited audience. I have content already written (not AI) as blogs about local history. We plan to tie in real estate loosely based on the topic. I’ve been taking notes on what we don’t like about podcasts, and most were on your list. But the biggest pet peeve is the talking about the weekend, hate that. Very well done, we will watch this video
I appreciate being given the context of the episode at the outset, including that of the presenter/s, so that I understand the nature of what I'm listening to, while I'm listening to it! For example, a beekeeper doing an episode on bee habitats would be very different than a pest control association doing an episode on bee habitats. Even if the content were very similar--what's behind the content would be imbued with a very different ethos.
I didn't even know what a "podcast" is, until now. I've been watching them on TH-cam and didn't know. Thanks for the great info, and getting to the point!
These are all great. One more might be length. So many podcasts are just SO LOOONG (due to some of the annoyances on your list no doubt). If your podcast about a movie is longer than the movie, that might be too long, right? We have a 30 minutes or less guarantee, like a sitcom or old school Domino's delivery.
Great list. I clicked on one of Apple's "Most Popular" podcasts and the first 5 MINUTES were ads. Will never return. Some of your top 10 are things I need to check myself on. Thanks.

With regard to this particular one, you covered many of the points that irritate me as well, including the NO EDITING and hosts talking over each other. Another one is.... if you're doing it in your kitchen, no biggy. Just PLEASE DON'T HAVE DIRTY DISHES AND CRAP IN VIEW!!!

As a person that is wanting to start podcasting, I am always listening to podcasts and trying to see what is the best things that I should be doing and looking at what not to do. I have several podcasts that I love to listen to that do exactly some of the things that you pointed out in this video. Yes, it gets on my nerves when they do it. Again thanks for the information.

As I am getting ready to start doing a podcast/vlog for my company really great material here as well as well as refresher as I use as I used to do talk radio in a previous life. Your point about inside jokes is well taken as a friend of mine who had been the morning guy at a major station in our market when I started out told me don’t do what he called “Board Talk” or “Inside Baseball”. I was a great fan of the late Don Imus (Imus in the Morning). A gentleman who called on me said he hated listening to Imus because he felt like the whole thing was an inside joke and if you hadn’t listened to him every day for years, you didn’t get it. Ironically, his wife loved the show.
Your point about being scripted is spot on, I was afraid I’d sound like I was reading, so I would have an outline of bullet points that I wanted to talk about, which made it easy to see as well as reference.
I appreciate that even though the quote was vulgar and used profanity, you didn’t. Thank you.

Excellent points.. I hate over-talking, running down rabbit holes, self deprecation, noisy kids & dogs barking in background.. and women putting on their makeup while attempting to present on a non- makeup subject.. it’s like the audience is an afterthought instead of their focus😏

What annoys me is mouth clicks and plosives. I'm researching what I need to purchase to avoid this. I spend hours editing out these very annoying sounds. Also, any tips on what to eat/drink or not that will help to avoid these sounds. Thank you.

Great topic. Being brand new to the thought of starting my own podcast, I have one major concern. The thought of reading listener's comments is intimidating to me, but I also know the information and feedback is so important. How can I survive that? LOL
If the comments attack your character don’t even mention them. But if they provide advice or constructive criticism it’s fair game. Remember that every piece of content is market research. Don’t attach your worth to it. You’re so much more than a podcast.

One thing to add -- annoying background music. I'm listening to a really good fiction podcast, but the music is SO jarring in between scenes that I want to fling my headphones.
I think you should contact the host and let him know. We appreciate when people tell us what they don’t like so we can fix it quickly. After all we make our content for our audience to enjoy

Really enjoyed this video. The thing that annoys me the most is people talking over each other and hosts interrupting guests. I was just listening to a podcast where the host giggled and laughed at everything the guest said. (And it’s a serious podcast.)
But Rogan, Roll, Peterson. They all do that! I even do that.
Really interesting point about constantly mentioning Patreon or other ways to financially support podcasts. You do have to strike a balance!

Thank you for your consideration for the listener. For me, I prefer no background music while the presenter is speaking. I find it to be a distraction to my ability to concentrate on the topic at hand; thereby diminishing the effectiveness of the overall message.

One thing i hate is when the audio fades in every sentence. Like when the audio goes from not there or really low to normal level audio every sentence that is being said. It's annoy as all he'll and makes it hard to listen to the content.
I know what you mean. It’s probably too aggressive of noise reduction or a noise gate.
Ive had my podcast for a year now. I unfortunately wasnt able to be consistent when my dog dog cancer and i was taking care of her. I was watching this and feeling bad that I’ve been inconsistent. But at least Im back to doing it regularly again but every other week instead of weekly. I was feeling bad about my podcast but after watching this…. I cant believe people DONT EDIT?! At all?? Also they EAT FOOD?! During the show?!?! Wow!!! I cringe with every small mouth sound and have to edit them all! 😅 I suddenly feel much better about the quality of my podcast. I wouldnt dare make most of these mistakes! 😳😳😅😅😀 Thank you for this video and the boost of confidence!

You're going to need to get a hold of a smartphone somehow and you should definitely start a show.
I bought some quality used equipment at a pawn shop for musicians. I don't use a phone or a laptop. I do my editing on a desktop with free Audacity software.
