My sister is a much better baker thank I am but for some reason she won't just jump right in and start her business. She's waiting for everything the be perfect. I jumped in and never looked back a year ago and never looked back. Made some mistakes and made some great choices along the way and now have a year's worth of loyal customers and my sister is still waiting for things to be perfect. You will never know how amazing you can be until you put yourself out there.
@@thebetterbites The best advice I can give is to get your permits and just start doing events. Learn what event coordinators are good and bad, learn what sells the best for you, what prices they want to buy from you at and most importantly how many items you need to bring to sell. Nothing worse than selling out in 90 minutes of a 5 hour event

I did get emotional at the end. I've let the fear of failure, fear of what others will say or think, and doing what everyone expected of me hold me back all my life. Baking/cooking is in my DNA and I've known that since I was little. I am so passionate about it and absolutely love baking/cooking for others. I'm now 45 and a single mom to 3 boys 10 and under. I'm now in the process of getting everything together to start my business. I am under the Cottage Food Laws in my area and as long as I stay under $25k a year I don't need a license or health inspection. It's still very scary because I want this to succeed and make sure I do everything right before I actually start baking. I have a sign with a quote that I keep reading to keep me motivated "Twenty years from now you will regret the things you didn't do more than the things you did".

I also want to share small secret that you can offer your cookies and pastry to local airbnb hosts (and they can include your goods in welcome pocket) or with local coffeeshops. We have 7 different business prior to our "opening" that interested in frequently collaboration. And to start fast better to have any contract, then dont have no contract. We take our first contracts from cortadowitch shop on etsy and our care cards from etsy too. I think that you should not spent a lot of time on administrative work, when you start business, if your business - bakery, then most of the time you should bake or farming customers, not choosing "good name" or planning ideal bakery set up
Great job on taking initiative in your business! It's so true that you shouldn't get caught up in the admin. Make the best decisions you can and then move on to tasks that will actually get you more orders and income :)
I’ve been a cook in a care home for 20 years and everyone has always said I should have a bakery but I never had the confidence. Three years ago I lost my husband to cancer and I was in a terrible place. I have since met a wonderful man and we have bought a house by the beach in Anglesey Wales and we plan to move there in 2 years when he retires. He supports my dream 100% I am finally going to start a home bakery business. I am 51 but it’s never too late to get started on your dreams. Watching this video has inspired me and I thank you 🙏 xx

Im 74 years old and all of a sudden want to start a baking pies business from home, but not to be subjected to inpections of my kitchen. How can I do this? I know im old but I have always liked baking and for some reason I am passionate about starting this new venture. I liked your video. You were honest and I felt as if you were reading my mind. I have frequently in my life STARTED things and not followed thru. But this time ---- I REALLY WANT TO FOLLOW THRU!!! Fear of failure is very much a part of this.

Genuinely, thank you. I think mistake #8 can apply to every single life endeavor. I am a recent graduate so I have been feeling really scared about starting my career in general. Asking myself “What if I’m not good enough?” And I’ve always been interested in starting a home baking business as a side hustle but never got the ball rolling out of this fear. I really needed it hammered into my brain that this fear means that I care a lot about it, which means I must do it anyway. Growth is often uncomfortable, but we CAN and MUST do it. ❤️

Wonderful! I'm a home-based FLORIST and flower farmer, and I want to merge away from bouquet deliveries (not very scale-able and not nice to continue while aging). I'm the best baker in our large family, so I end up making most things at Christmas, or they complain, lol. I love it. My plan is to introduce my flower customers to my baked goods with flower niche, so that I eventually can merge 100% away from fresh flower deliveries. My floral name is perfect for floral sweet treats! The mark up on chocolate, for my current add-on sales is ridiculous! $8.50 wholesale (just a 80g block), that they say to sell for $11.50 RRP. Customers do pay it! I fell for it because the packaging is a beautiful floral wrap, but I feel bad that the chocolate is unremarkable, and I usually like all choc! Thank you for your advice - I'm fired up!

Thank you for this sage advice. I am looking into doing a home bakery starting beginning of next year. Gathering all the info I can to make transition smooth as possible.I have started just looking on amazon to get an IDEA of what items I eventually want to have but it will come together in pieces. I have most of everything to get started now. I am just waiting to move to a better place with a larger kitchen because the place I have at the moment is too dang small. pricing ingredients you need to cover at least your ingredients cost and time. Depending where you live that could be 3 or 4 times the cost of your ingredients but again depends where you live. Dont undercharge and dont do favors because it is a business. Treat it like one. Otherwise you will not succeed if people bat their eyelashes and say can I get this for a discount or free.

You approached it all in a very intelligent, common sense manner, while speaking from your heart. I'd like to get your opinion on my situation: I'm in the embryonic stages at home, with demand spawning for a couple of artisan sourdough breads I innocently shared. I'm open to taking it up a notch from home, but what I don't understand is how I can make any serious money with this, considering all the time and labor involved. There's nurturing of sourdough starter, plus all the proofing time and kneading. This is a far cry from the quick turnaround of pastries. So, it seems like something more suitable for a hobby at most. What say you?
Great question Chuck! Most bread bakers I know managed to turn it into a profitable business by also baking other things like doughnuts and pastries that are less time consuming and more profitable. BUT, also keep in mind that with bread there's a lot of PASSIVE time you can't charge for. It's only fair to charge our customers for ACTIVE time we spend on their orders. So, when you add up all the ACTIVE time you spend on a loaf of bread, it won't be as severe as you might think.
@@aureliaphilosophyofyum My point is that if I'm concentrating solely on this kind of bread, I don't see how a one-man business can generate enough loaves to be viable.

Im starting with sugar cookies because i love being creative. Im also going to have some other cookies for the market but the sugar cookie will allow me to express my creativity whether is rotal icing art or figurines with cookies. In canada we just have to make sure everything is labeled properly with ingredients and such for things like cookies.

Genuinely, thank you. I think mistake #8 can apply to every single life endeavor. I am a recent graduate so I have been feeling really scared about starting my career in general. Asking myself “What if I’m not good enough?” And I’ve always been interested in starting a home baking business as a side hustle but never got the ball rolling out of this fear. I really needed it hammered into my brain that this fear means that I care a lot about it, which means I must do it anyway. Growth is often uncomfortable, but we CAN and MUST do it. ❤️

Wonderful! I'm a home-based FLORIST and flower farmer, and I want to merge away from bouquet deliveries (not very scale-able and not nice to continue while aging). I'm the best baker in our large family, so I end up making most things at Christmas, or they complain, lol. I love it. My plan is to introduce my flower customers to my baked goods with flower niche, so that I eventually can merge 100% away from fresh flower deliveries. My floral name is perfect for floral sweet treats!
The mark up on chocolate, for my current add-on sales is ridiculous! $8.50 wholesale (just a 80g block), that they say to sell for $11.50 RRP. Customers do pay it! I fell for it because the packaging is a beautiful floral wrap, but I feel bad that the chocolate is unremarkable, and I usually like all choc!

Thank you for this sage advice. I am looking into doing a home bakery starting beginning of next year. Gathering all the info I can to make transition smooth as possible.I have started just looking on amazon to get an IDEA of what items I eventually want to have but it will come together in pieces. I have most of everything to get started now. I am just waiting to move to a better place with a larger kitchen because the place I have at the moment is too dang small. pricing ingredients you need to cover at least your ingredients cost and time. Depending where you live that could be 3 or 4 times the cost of your ingredients but again depends where you live. Dont undercharge and dont do favors because it is a business. Treat it like one. Otherwise you will not succeed if people bat their eyelashes and say can I get this for a discount or free.

It all starts with choosing the RIGHT NICHE for your business. You need to solve a real problem with your baking. You approached it all in a very intelligent, common sense manner, while speaking from your heart. I'd like to get your opinion on my situation: I'm in the embryonic stages at home, with demand spawning for a couple of artisan sourdough breads I innocently shared. I'm open to taking it up a notch from home, but what I don't understand is how I can make any serious money with this, considering all the time and labor involved. There's nurturing of sourdough starter, plus all the proofing time and kneading. This is a far cry from the quick turnaround of pastries. So, it seems like something more suitable for a hobby at most. What say you?
Great question Chuck! Most bread bakers I know managed to turn it into a profitable business by also baking other things like doughnuts and pastries that are less time consuming and more profitable. BUT, also keep in mind that with bread there's a lot of PASSIVE time you can't charge for. It's only fair to charge our customers for ACTIVE time we spend on their orders. So, when you add up all the ACTIVE time you spend on a loaf of bread, it won't be as severe as you might think.
@@aureliaphilosophyofyum My point is that if I'm concentrating solely on this kind of bread, I don't see how a one-man business can generate enough loaves to be viable.

Im starting with sugar cookies because i love being creative. Im also going to have some other cookies for the market but the sugar cookie will allow me to express my creativity whether is rotal icing art or figurines with cookies. In canada we just have to make sure everything is labeled properly with ingredients and such for things like cookies.
