I started on a mpc2000 back in 2000, we did everything to try and isolate sounds. Wiggle the 1/4 inch cable in the back, phase cancel stereo sample, use karaoke machines to remove vocals. You really had to use your brain and make it work. But being wired from the 12 sec sampling time era is a blessing bc the possibilities open up crazy
Great stem shootout, they both sound good, with a characteristic to use each system algorithms as an another colour in your production. Let’s not get lazy with Hip hop production and keep the energy pushing in creation. Love your voice by the way, beautiful to literally have the Balance, life needs Excellent Women Producers / Tutors 👩🏻🏫. MPC got the weight and body to the sound with less fluffy artefacts.
Great comparison, thanks for your time . Sounds to me like mpc has it licked just slightly. But it’s all amazing technology that we should be grateful for and it will all improve .👍🔥😎
This is a great comparison! I too have tried a whole heap of these. I quite like the way the akai doesnt try to 100% eliminate the other elements and retains a slightly less phased artifacted sound. For my money the best one I have tried is Ultimate vocal remover and its free so double win!. LALAAi is also a good un.
Thank you for uploading your video. I've just got the MPC stems and chopping them first then stemming them is a good shout. I think Serato processed the samples quicker. But you can't beat the MPC for the level of sound it puts out especially after normalising them.
MPC does a better job to my ears. I use RipX too, which is more on par with MPC. They all leave artifacts in reality, just depends how clean or messy the song is. Having done a few song stems I found MPC best for vocals & drums, they just seem better, less artifacts. Try smells like teen spirit by nirvana, works very well 😎👌
I use Rip X as well, it’s been dope. It’s true that Some tracks leave more artifacts than others, but I like rip x for being able to turn audio into midi or stems. Gotta try Mpc stems soon too
I've been testing both over the last week and to be honest there's really not that much difference depending on the source material. All have artefacts. Some tracks just sound awful, some great I think Serato is way, way more versatile though, it puts the sample straight into time with the DAW and gives the song Key there's also a lot more options for manipulating the audio. I'm not a fan of separated drum and/or bass stems with either to be honest but I have more drum samples than I'll even need and prefer to program my own. I prefer my bass ( especially sub ) to be super clean. If standalone comes along for MPC it might be a different story, but I think the onboard processing will be slow. Time will tell with that one. I still think that Lalal is by far the best quality though but you don't have any chopping.
Appreciate everything you do, And I Agree with you, we come from that era where you made it work. Thanks for the comparison. Actually they both work very well and the results can be tinkered with. As far as starting with nothing...I would have to go with the MPC stems because of the Price difference between the two (Hell I'm Old and still on a budget). One thing I can say without a doubt, Them Drums hit hard in the MPC. LOL, Thanks again for taking the time to lay it out like this and also thanks for the "Gem" on slicing prior to processing with the MPC Stems.
Spot on breakdown. I use Serato studio, and just from listening to this tutorial on my phone, MPC seems to have more girth with the stems. Serato tends to have a digital white noise that can be irritating. Now, like you alluded to, I am from the era in which you have to figure out how to make it work regardless of what equipment or DAW you use. In the comment section, someone provided a solution that I never thought to do that may work. They mentioned that you could kill the eq to get rid of the background noise. Goes to show you that you can teach an old dog new tricks. Anyway, great video and your track is ⚡️🔥💯.
I see that ambient music tend to blend more sonically so when using stem seperation you get more artifacts or I should say residual sound from other stems a lot. R&B\ Soul some rock or any music that use less ambient effects or sound tend to seperate a lot better. I pretty much know how its going to turn out when I hear the track. This was a excellent comparison. I absolutely loved the knowledgable commentary along with it. Keep doing what you do. Love to see more. Thank you. 🙏🏾
I love the MPC and now we have usable STEMS! I liked the sound of the MPC STEMS better. I’ve been using Ableton Live as my DAW and also LOGIC for a while. However I’m considering getting FL Studio and would like to try their STEMS also. First I need a new computer though. I am excited for MPC STEMS to eventually go to stand alone also because I prefer working standalone and DAWless
From those examples I would pick the MPC. It wasn't even really close for me. The stems just seemed to be cleaner and kept the character a good bit better (less bleeding, filtering, phasing, etc.) They are both way better than I ever would have expected. The whole stems thing is crazy.
Thanks for the video... From the Bronx ... Stems have come along way ... Wow... Lol.. used record hip hop on cassette tape and try to filter sounds and make loops .. we used what we had ..
For $9.99 in the MPC that’s awesome. I’m very happy with MPC STEMS. It’s another great tool. I grew up poor too. And yeah this is light year ahead of anything I’ve ever had.
I use the stems with the mpc key 37 I think over time they will improve it in the quality it takes time it’s still a work in progress for now just have fun doing what you love to do with the tools we are givin
I did a few stems on my MPC and they came out fine for the most part. Definitely some bleeding. Still way beyond what we could do with low pass and high pass filters. I guess we'll see how much better it gets over time.
Have you tried Steinberg SpectraLayers?? I find it to be the best of them all but I don't see any big talk about. Seems like not many people use it but it's the most precise yet
Seems like all the stemming software struggles with long reverb tails. I think it’s because of how the frequency changes. Does the MPC stems have touch sensitivity?
If you are using your Akai mpc as your DA converter in Controller mode and in Serato the MPC is still the audio interface this is not a an equal playing field because the MPC has that "thud" and "Air" in its DA(which is artificial), there needs to be another converter which is the baseline, playback is everything. Just use test tone from your computer you will hear the difference. Cubase has had stem separation for over 5 years now, you can also emphasize which stem you want to be more focused on, it can do a whole 5 minutes song in less than what Akai does for one minute song. The converters in Akai is below industry standards is accenting many frequencies to make it sound like a pro machine. It is not one. Great Video and Thank you.
@@Dr_Fangaz334 yes it is but when you take it standalone the converters in the MPC will do the conversion and if in controller mode you are using another audio interface you will hear a difference. Also can time warping you do in controller mode will sound horrible in standalone because your MPC is not a match to your computers CPU. Mpc is basically a glorified midi controller.
Lalal is better for me And I’d definitely keep comparisons within the same DAW environment. Also not sure if you gain compensated but Serato usually needs 3dB or so
When I compared Serato Sample v2 Stems to FL Stems, I felt FL was more clean. I feel RipX and FL are on par with another and are both better than the other Stem Extractors.
hey this is what i noticed and this is me from trying different samples... I found that when you use samples that don't have all the Reverb on it... it comes out way better cleaner... this is with the mpc stems though for some reason I can't get Serato to run on my PC...
@ around 23:00 the direct comparison am I crazy or does the Serato sound good on the surface but then in the background you can hear it actively killing the volume and creating what sounds like a reverb warble? Its present in the drum section too, its sounds like a flanger not a reverb though my mistake. Like a metallic flanger slowly oscillating.
To me, FL Studio has the best stem separation as far as the cleanest separation of the tracks. I use that with Speedrum vst and get my chops from there. Don't get me wrong, I like both Serato and MPC stems, but for workflow, FL Studio hands down.
I disagree that Serato has the best stem separation. Have you tried Algoriddim’s DJay Pro AI on the iPad??? It is by far better than Serato and it was doing stem separation a year before.
