Just so y’all know, 2012-2016 ford focuses, any transmission problems you have, i.e failing to shift, won’t start, etc, that’s caused by a part called the tcm, transmission control module, ford has an active recall on this part for any focused made during those years

Got it used from a dealer in 2021 a 2012 titanium package for 5.5k. Thing drives very well with good brakes. Only issue is it can be slow to change gears on green lights. Other then that its a great car if treated right.

I've learnt the sequence to reset the transmission module. Super easy. Just do it when the trouble starts, and it will relearn your driving style. No more grindy shifts.

    • @splofteyloftey9731
      @splofteyloftey9731 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Basically switch off car, open drivers door, close door.
Now put in key or press start button without starting the car... so only on - position. Put car in Neutral - prompt should pop up saying transmission ready. Now drive like you normally do and it will relearn shifting.

Bought a 2012 Focus Titanium. Only noticed the bumping in crawling construction lane traffic. My dealer said you need to accelerate hard with it from a stop, every couple of weeks. Put 90,000 miles on it with NO FAILURE. Loved the crisp shifting when accelerating hard. Loved that car. Would buy it again.

have a 2016 and I have not had any problems luckily with mine . I used to drive it probably 1k or more miles a week at one point and it never failed .It now has about 90 k miles and running great . But yeah treat it like a manual , in that sense let up on the gas when you feel a shift with that 6speed Auto .. that's what I have done . My fiance has an 18 se with 128k sitting in the yard with its second seized engine. The first under warranty, the second is under recall but ford does not have the parts / ability to install a new motor without using the recalled parts, so we got told to try again in Q2 2024.
Her dad has an 18 SE with 165k. He is experiencing complete transmission failure after dealing with the "lurching and jerkiness" for well over 100k miles and he put no maintenance into that car AT ALL except for when I did his oil changes because he wouldn't.

Yea the powershift that they later admitted they knew due to the dry clutch setup it was going to have issues. Because VW and BMW were using wet clutch but Ford thought the fuel mileage savings were more important than reliability. The people at Ford that spoke up before release of the transmission got belittled so they just let it go knowing it was defective. So they increased the warranty, did some fixes so they could buy time to secretly kill it off. Then got sued once again so they had to buy them back. They knew all along it wasnt going to work. They just patching the problem with warranties until they could slip out of hot water because it was too late to back out of their project with Getrag.

i had my 2017 focus for about a year and a half and had no problems. Still hadn’t no major repairs. Trick is treat the car like a manual.
Edit: if you gonna get this car, it is not a city car, you will overheat the tranmission fast if you don’t drive it properly. If you lived in the country or close to highways or rural areas where you mostly spend a lot of time moving mostly (not stopping alot) then this car is perfect
Update: been 3 years now and still no transmission problem. Only thing major was a new purge valve.

Everything said makes sense and largely is correct except the last bit.
Ford ceasing product of the Focus and Fiesta was due to import tariffs and a shifting American car market. while it was selling extraordinarily, the cost to use up space of the factories for vehicles like these was too costly for Ford’s eyes with the tariffs included. When manufacturing space could be devoted to the explosive crossover and SUV market, it was a no brainer for Ford.
(This is a very poor summary, I’d advise you do your own digging into this for a more detailed telling)

Ok so I don't have a Ford Focus I have a 2016 Ford Fusion Se 2.5 liter but can reason with some of the issues claimed. My car had harsh shift conditions [shifts and jerks btwn gears] and delayed acceleration response when putting foot on peddle with no alerting service engine light detected so I will only speak on that regard. Furthermore I took my car to 4 different dealerships during warranty and too no avail everything they did, didn't fix the issue so I took it upon myself to do some research and started testing theories off of TH-cam after my warranty expired I stumbled upon three things that actually helped me out
    1. Ecm update
This resets the cars driving algorithm so that way it learns your pattern ($155 at ford)
    2. Tune up such as engine coils and spark plugs price vary I used my own parts
    3. Air filter very cheap I got mine from K&N
Try those three things and hopefully it will work and function correctly Mines have been much better since then. 💯

I own a Focus, and so far the transmission hasn’t been too bad at basically 92,000 miles. I’ve found the car simply has a short temper and does not like to do anything crazy. It will jolt from a stop unless you are very gentle on the gas until like 10 mph, so my best advice is to be very gentle with accelerating. That’s not to say all fords are this way however, I also own an Explorer, and so far the car has been perfect. No rattles, no squeaks, it runs smooth, and it’s a beast. My only problem with it is how much it can chew though gas, the best I could get out of it is 19.7 mpg, bcuz every time I accelerate It is spirited, to keep the cats clean and reduce carbon buildup. However the Focus is not meant to be ran like this, so it’s better to drive like a grandma.

Yeah, you’re right. My 2013 Focus also has a short temper at 76K miles. When I start my day driving the car, it will behave well and the transmission will shift normal, but after a while of driving it will start shuttering and accelerate jerky.

Last year i took my car to a ford dealership. My car had completely shut off. Before it was jerking and jumping. Transmission was the culprit. I later learned after i did some research Ford apparently will fix the part in the transmission. It sat there fir almost a year. Dearlship apparently did not follow rules to order the patt correctly. We called headquarters spoke with customer service amd they said dealership didn't do their order for the part correctly. They also said they opened up all department just to work on the problems. I really like my car. Also, the 4th time you meed servicing for the transmission they are supposed to give you money for the value of your car. Or another car. Im on my 3rd repair now. I really pray it stays fixed. It is great on gas. I have only 64,000 miles on it. So far it runs great. Good luck.

What the dealer told me was the transmission is basically a manual transmission shifted by a computer-which I take to mean the tcm.
Once I realized that, part of it is driving habits. In other words drive it as you would a manual. So depending on the situation give it gas or let totally off the gas to force it to engage the next gear or to release the gear. Also try to avoid creeping in traffic.
The tcm was changed on mine at 97,000 miles and still going strong at over 182,000. In fact the last oil change I’d gone 8,000 miles between changes which isn’t good. But they said the oil was dirty but wasn’t low. No complaints. It’s paid off and still gets about 36mpg.
