Inspired by my recent trip to Japan, I would like to share with you one of my favorite poems:
    O snail!
    Climb Mount Fuji
    -- but slowly, slowly.
Like many haiku, there is a substantial amount of wisdom contained within these three lines, much of which pertains to the best that life has to offer. If you don't see it yet, allow me to offer three lessons contained therein to edify you. Find your Fuji, and climb it as slowly as possible.

      An Old Silent Pond...
A Frog Jumps Into The Pond,
      "SPLASH!" Silence again.
      ~ Harry Behn (translation)
      Furuike ya
      kawazu tobikomu
      mizu no oto
      ~ Bashō (1686)
This is my favourite: Thank you for sharing yours, it's tremendously good as well. I tend to like the absolute momentary nature of Haiku as an end to their meaning in themselves, but 'one' can impose one's own intellect and take things a little beyond that, such that the above Haku by Basho to me captures the experience of momentarily being alive, indirectly in this vast, vast reality in such a small vignette. As said I tend to disavow intellectual meaning in Poetry/Haiku as best. But it can be done if needed.
When we were kids, we made camps/bivouacs in the woods and learnt the building was the fun part, more than the actual using. Although if we'd built a house in a tree (aka a full and functional tree-house) it might have been the other way around: Friends, Beers, music, camp-fire and stories in the dark and more!
Hope you had a very good trip to Japan. Thank you for your work.

In an Era where both men and the family unit has become almost obsolete, it’s almost paramount that you fellas find some sort of purpose or meaning in life. Is a family something you "wish for"? Or is it a socially constructed or culturally created expectation that becomes a behavior pattern within a society that we are simply expected to follow or are "trained" to perform (per social expectations, religious teachings or cultural values, etc.)?

@randalford if you think wanting to procreate and have a familial structure is creates by societal pressure and then you've fallen too far down the Woke rabbit-hole.
It's not a social construct anymore than wanting food is a social construct... though woke SJWs would have you believe you're only hungry bc society has told you you are hungry 🤣

    • @caseygreyson4178
      @caseygreyson4178 ปีที่แล้ว +17

@@randalfordIt can be both. It is both a societal expectation, but also something that a lot of us want. Nowadays, societal expectations are changing and less people are getting married and having kids. I’d argue that the expectation has shifted to that, so by your own logic, people who aren’t getting married and aren’t having kids aren’t doing that out of personal choice, but because they feel pressured by society to not get married and not have children.

You're slowly (slowly :)) becoming terrific at presenting these ideas. Thanks for the consistently great content.
Fellow psychologist chiming in: in a lecture on self-compassion a few years ago the lecturer made a clear distinction between goals and directions - and he referred to something very akin to the latter part of this video. Goals are good...they provide meaning for some time. The problem comes when you achieve them: now what?
Directions are better. They provide meaning, endlessly. Being completely honest could be a direction. Being hard-working. Being kind to yourself and others. You can develop traits like these tremendously in a year or two - but you'll never be "done." You'll keep failing, now and then, and probably keep discovering new roadblocks that you weren't aware of. Or you'll become pissed, depressed, or give up, and start all over again.
Find a direction, or a few directions that align with each other. Don't choose something that you can ever be completely done with.

Thanks for the upload. I like this because in a way it’s contrary to the ideals ingrained in a lot of us, especially in the states. It’s common to hear that “life’s too short” and so we need to make things happen, which creates haste. And often times the speed at which we can make things happen is seen as valuable. Hustle-culture, for example. It’s a status quo that I think gets ingrained so deeply, that the all value is taken out of the journey and only placed in the end goal.
It also reminds me of another belief held amongst many in Asia that’s similar: the idea of “happiness”. In the states, it sometimes feels like happiness is the only truly acceptable emotion - not always, but it’s almost like “it’s bad to be sad” (toxic positivity) maybe not in an extreme/literal sense, but being happy, seeking happiness, and avoiding sadness and distancing yourself from anything that doesn’t make you happy is a concept I’ve seen pushed a lot in my life. And a lot of us will make big, life-altering decisions chasing happiness, even if we’re unsure happiness will be the outcome of the decision.
Whereas in a lot of Asian countries, I think happiness and sadness are seen as equals, like yin and yang. Sadness is embraced, rather than avoided or buried - because really they can’t exist without the other - and even on a biological level, sadness as an emotion wouldn’t exist if it didn’t serve a purpose.
I’ll disclaim, this is anecdotal, and I could probably be mistaken on a lot of it. Hell, I think this is the premise of the Pixar movie ‘Inside Out’.
    Regardless, great video as always!

This reminds me of my favorite poem ever, learned in high-school and still remembering it now at 38. It's written by Lucian Blaga, a Romanian writer and philosopher, in 1964. Here goes the original in Romanian (my English translation will follow):
    == Întrebare și răspuns ==
Ce ne va tine totdeauna tineri?
Adu o jertfa zi de zi
    zeitei mari, paginei Vineri!
    Hraneste cald, oricare-ar fi,
un vis ce nu se va-mplini!
And here goes my (almost literal) English translation since I'm not aware of any:
    == Question and answer ==
What will keep us forever young?
Make a sacrifice, each passing day
    To grand goddess, pagan Friday!
Nurture slowly, whichever it might be
A dream that will never come to be!
Above, "nurture slowly" would be "nourish warm" in the original, but I don't think that conveys the intended meaning too well in English.
Also, the part about the pagan goddess Friday took me a while to understand, but in old Romanian tradition this goddess would forbid women from doing house chores on Fridays. So I presume what Blaga intended that verse to mean was: forgo some of your daily chores or obligations (which is a kind of sacrifice if you end up with a less than clean house or clothes, or eating unhealthy food maybe?) and dedicate the time to that burning passion of yours.
I love it so much because in just 5 verses it manages to touch on a lot of important issues in life: you'll feel young and motivated if you have a passion; a passion will require some sacrifices; you have to cultivate that passion, but not too hastily or so much that it either dies of malnutrition or of being overfed and then you're left out without a dream to pursue. A small objection here is that one might then switch to another passion, to which someone might object that if you burn through a passion so quickly, you don't get to explore its full potential, its full richness of pleasures that it can reward back to you.
    Anyway, it's a poem I love :)

It can and should also be about being the best husband/ wife, father/ mother/ and friend etc... The quest to be the best person you can be in ALL the relationships that matter to you is never ending and the goal perhaps even higher than Mount Fuji.

You have set very limited goals. Listen to the video again. Orion as talking not only about family, relationships, love, but also something that is called different names in the various wisdom traditions:
      Attainment of Buddhahood
      Union with the Godhead
      The ATMAN, or "Self'
      The Oversoul
      etc. etc.
These are the highest goals one can conceive. Embracing these puts all mundane objectives into perspective, and makes their attainment much easier. Check out the AQAL chart (Google it) to work out where you are and what is the next concrete step.

: ) I have two Snail figures (a pottery one i keep out in my Camper, & a blown glass version on one of my patios) I'll always associate them with this from now on! Thanks. : ) I hope you will consider writing a Children's book about this! I don't have any of my own, but it would be precious for those who do. ~April L.

One of your best... and it reminds me I'm on my own path, through my own night, being my on light....But I'd like to add something. I agree with this story in the technical sense > to achieve a practical goal or skill, for example Learning a language or profession. But is there anything to achieve in the psyche? I will become peaceful, calmer or loving by a technique, a system,..... in time. Being aware of whatever state I'm in is the only logical thing to do. Spychologically Mount F. is a problem... it is merely an invention of thought. The art of repairing an engine is real, in the sense that a technique is a problem solver. Here the ideal is a fixed engine that runs perfect. If we transport this to the psyche ( as we often do and as society indoctrinated us to do ) it is a way of blinding ourselves.

According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the highest goal is 'self-actualization'. That is when one realizes the full potential. But I think even after one realize the full potential , he or she would be still restless until realizing what is beyond that--the ultimate reality. We all have an innate need to realize the ultimate truth, but that need is hidden under the never ending worldly needs

    1. Aim for a lofty goal, e.g. starting a family
    2. Do it on your terms, e.g. don't get married or get a pre-nup
    3. Take your time, e.g. don't worry about age 30 as being a deadline. It takes as long as it takes to build yourself up, find someone, vet someone, etc. Enjoy the process

Starting a family isn’t lofty enough it’s easy. Being the best man possible for your family though that’s a lofty goal.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE " 30" IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO GET MARRIED TO BEGIN WITH. AND WHY NOT A PRENUP? USEFUL FOR BOTH PARTIES, SO THAT ONE DOESN'T TAKE EVERYTHING IF THEY WALK AWAY. ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAD ALREADY INVESTED $$ INTO THE RELATIONSHIP?????

@@kimsmith7212 some people do worry about 30 as they see life as some sort of race. I actually meant get a pre-nup.

Your purpose should be your first goal, your purpose will never leave you, will never take half of your money, will never dissapoint you. I cant say that for females, so chase your purpose, not females. Or you will be dissapointed in life.

Tools as goals gives you infinite climb, because attaining a tool opens up further possibilities. The more versatile the tool, the broader your horizon. This is imagining not the end result, but steps along the way to changing things. Dream of hammers, not houses.
