  • Roland Garros 1992 witnessed a historic match in the women's draw. Monica Seles won her third consecutive Grand Slam after beating Steffi Graf. That third set that lasted 91 minutes has gone down in history as one of the best for its level. We remember this fantastic final.

Steffi hit 66 unforced errors (Seles only 30).

In my opinion Mônica Seles would have been the best tennis player of all time if she hadn't suffered that attack, I remember some tennis players at the time saying that only a male tennis player could beat Seles the day she played to her full potential, and after she returned to A few blocks after the attack, an average tennis player returned and never even approached what she was before.

So true. We definitely caught glimpses of her former self in her second career, but they were far too seldom. To do as well as she did against the rest of the field operating at 50% of her confidence, fearlessness, and fitness was still quite remarkable. She still pulled off big wins against everyone, and almost always beat players ranked below her.

Monica would of dominated women’s tennis till the late 90’s till the Williams sisters came on the scene and Lindsay Davenport got her peak fitness. She would of handled Hingis in 1997. Steffi world of lifted her game as well! I actually think Monica would of won 20 grand slams and steffi would of ended up with 15!!
There head to head would of been pretty even.
Prior to the stabbing there head to head was 6-4 steffi grads way.
After the stabbing it was 4-1 grafs way. But 4 out of the 5 went to 3 sets with graf winning the 3rd set 6-3 or 6-4 with Monica losing the last 3 games as she was 10 to 15 kg heaver then this match.
Tho Monica was still a great player after her come back (ranked in the top 10 from 1995 to 2002) she was not the same physically. Her shot making was still brilliant and her serve was better but her court movement was the slowest out of all the top players.
From 1990 to April 1993 Monica won 32 titles and won 8 grand slams.

But still to come back and be ranked in the top 10 from 1996 to 2002 was still an outstanding achievement. One thing is for sure Monica would have won a lot more then her 9 grand slam titles and steffi would have won less. Monica had a problem with food way back in 1991. She didn't have the fitness level or practice drive like Graf. There is NO WAY she was going to keep dominating. From Sports Illustrated 1991: "There she goes again, slathering heaping mounds of butter across her steak, her French fries, her pizza. "Ugh. Gross, totally grody, I know," she says. "But I can't help it. I must be addicted to butter. I just can't eat any food without it. I know it all goes right to fat down there, too [she points below her waist]."

Seles fans would have hard time believing that Graf had 6-4 record before stabbing and 4-1 after stabbing. Their argument was that she was on the rise, but those days female player's game peaked around when they were 19-20 years old. Yes, we were robbed of many more great matches between them but for someone to have won 22 slams in 11-12 years (2 in a year) is unheard of either in ATP or WTA. Serena took twice the time for her 23 slams. Steffi was once in a lifetime player. May be Alcaraz can do better. We shall see. But all this woulda, coulda doesn't matter.

Not really. Everyone knows Graf was the only active player with a leading h2h vs Seles. Graf had a 3-0 lead vs Seles in 1989, so it’s not really a surprise that she would head their h2h by early 1993, given how few matches they played in the meantime. Our point is that Seles was winning the biggest matches (leading Graf 3-1 in slam finals) while dominating the tour. Which explains why she was #1 and Graf wasn’t and needed the help of a criminal to reestablish herself.
