I've been running 2 tanks for a year. Thought I had it down, but I still learned a few great tips from this video. I was sad when you left ESO a few years ago, glad to see you back, Deltia!
Tips for newer players: If you are waiting in queues for a long time to complete Undaunted dailies, create a tank, it's insta pop for queues. Next best is healer. ...but, for the love of Dibella, don't queue as a tank/healer if you aren't actually able to taunt or properly heal and buff. Another tip, if you are unwilling or unable to tank/heal. Queue your dungeon and do the Mage's Guild, Fighter's Guild, and Bolgrul dailies and work towards finishing them, your queue will pop and you won't be sitting there bored to death...
One thing I recently learned is that you can block and cast abilites at same time while keeping block. Just hold the right mouse button and spam igneous shield while the boss is charging and heavy attack on you :) Try it :D

Thank you! I started playing ESO about two months ago. I wanted to learn tanking, but was so intimidated by horror stories of people harshly criticizing tanks for even the smallest misstep. But by following your tips, I became more comfortable with the role, and I’m thoroughly enjoying that I have such a strong influence on the group’s success. You rock~
I have been trying all roles lately, tank is one of my favorites and yes, can be scary at times lol. One thing i'm finding is that every role gives its own perspective as well when playing. Love that. I have been trying to coach some newer players on tanking. So many times, i hear ' oh this is boring, i'm doing nothing but standing there, or look at how much damage i can take'. This video and my gained knowledge is exactly what I have been trying to impart to them. Takes a willingness to learn, and not looking at the phone combat. lol. Great video.
I love this video, D. You hit every major point. Covered fundamental, and showed the different abilities between class tanks that impact the function. 💯 Awesome
It's funny how in pug, dps can do low damage and die to mechanics standing in aoe for more than 10 times but the second the tank (a good one) dies accidentally to a mechanic, all hell breaks loose lol :')
Trust me, I see people complaining about dps waaay more than tanks. Even if a group is making steady progress in a dungeon and no one is dying, a lot of times someone will rage quit because they think the dps is too low - even though it makes no sense to quit in that situation, because they will have to queue again and run through the same content again, meaning in the end that it took them two or three times as long to complete the content. ;) I think most people in the game have an understanding that tanking is the hardest role to play and therefore give you some slack, especially if you just tell people up front that you've never done certain content before or you're still learning....
@@supertrexandroidx I do understand people leaving because DPS is too low. For example, last time I was tanking for vSCP and this dps told me that was their 4th or 5th time in the dungeon because people kept leaving. That alone should've been a red flag for me but I stayed to help em out, maybe the others were just being dickheads and left. While playing I realised that the group damage output was painfully low but I just shrugged it off. Right at the second boss, the healer noticed that the dps earlier was using a resto staff at the back bar, so we asked them about it and they said that was their PvP build but it's okay because they "damage was still there". Wrong, the damage output was so low that the healer even had to chime in to do damage as well in order to progress the dungeon. The healer was doing around 30% dps while also trying to heal. That and the fact that both our dps ignored adds in boss fights lol. The rest of the dungeon was just super painful but we managed to get it done after hours. I understood right after it ended why people left earlier. I don't really care what people wear in dungeons as long as they're doing their jobs lol. But when you jump into vet DLC dungeon, you need to adjust and adapt to the dificulty rise. Doing bare minimum and hoping for the team to carry is exactly why people would leave dungeons tbh. Because people don't wanna spend 5 hours trying to finish a dungeon when they could leave, wait for 15 mins and hope they get a good pug team that can finish the dungeon at least maybe within an hour

Literaly the first claim is a lie, there IS an AoE Taunt in the game, but almost none is using it. its one of the advantages for templars in special vs dragon Knights. it is the Tormentor Set, Every class with an charge/Leap/blink skill that does AoE dmg will become an AoE Taunt, Templars have one called explosiv Charge with a radius of 6m on impact. Inside the 2 handes weapon skill line, there is also a charge, sorcerer tanks can use blink. But for ANY Temp tanks outhere, there is a weapon set vom the solo Arena Vateshran with a shield and a weapon, were you can pull every mob (except bosses) within 12m to your position, put a debuff (major Malm) on ANY target you just pulled, and RIGHT AFTER you just use ur Charge the the next target and you have a REAL AoE Spott for 15 sec on EVERY Mob within 6m. in additon you get 3600 Armor for the same time (16sec) you can use Bloodthirsty Monsterset to guaranted get 13 Ulti every 5 sec and another 3700 Armor for 5 sec because you tanking literaly every mob, the 6% chance to proc is multiplicated by the amount of mobs you tank. If u are using caltrops (from PvE line) you got an AoE debuff for every mob within range and you dont reliant on single puncture, I know you will miss the Minor Break but but the Bonuses from an AoE taunt are bigger then the loss of minor Break, in fact you have to keep in mind, that alot dmd dealer, using harpooners Legs (mythical item) that generates stacks up to 10, to increase crit and crit dmg but they will loose 5 stacks everytime they get a direct hit, so for any adds and Trash you cant single taunt fast enought, they loose dmg. Another advantage of the Tormentor set is the "Silver line" skill from the Fighters Guild, cause its a pull with dmg, it also procs the single taunt and armor buffs, so in case the 12m range from the Vatreshan set is not enought you just spam "silver line" to one target after another, and you dont have to pull + single spot every mob. So as Temp we are using Tormentor 5 set, Vateshran 2 set, Bloodthirsty 2 set, explosiv Charge, Shield Bash (for aoE pull) Caltrops, Defensive Stand (from 1h+ schild) cause the 10% block mitigation and 10% less costs, over the class barrier, Repentance (for the reg and sta gain on kills) and temporal guard from psijik for our Mainbar. for the Backbar however, we can use any 5 set armor to buff/support the party, you just have to use the jewelery slots and a frost or Lighning staff combined, to get a different Bonus on backbar. for example for "random" groups that strugle on healing, or for Vet dungeons without a healer, I use Winters Respite, cause my Healing AoE, Rune, and even the Wall of elements are ground effects, so they will trigger the healing circle, wich in combination with my Ritual, granting my party 5k AoE Heal over time for every 2 sec and also towards me, combined with my Rune, add another 3,8k heal every second ontop and the new patched Version of Living Dark, for round about 3,8k heal every 0,5 sec if u get hitted as an oh shit button heal. and with the Frost staff you put another anti-range barrier on everyone in range. You also can use Frozen Watcher with a frost staff on back bar and hit block, after the AoE taunt to keep the brittle debuff on every mob that increase the crit dmg by 10% for the party. One of the Best backbar set however is from RG Trial, the Saxhleel Champion, the 5 piece set bonus is exactly the same like the Agressiv Horn ultimate, but you can combine this with another Ultimate, I for my self love the PvP Barrier, cause a 30k+ Barrier for my team while the 20% crit dmg buff is active, they dont have to care about health for quite a long time (30sec duration). So for BackBar we use situational Sets and Wall of Elements, Silver line (its also a stamina based skill vs the explosive charge taunt wich uses mana) Ritual, Fokus Rune, Living Dark, and Aggressiv Horn or Barrier (if you are using Saxhleel set), For CP I use the Defensive Slotables excpet for the dmg over time, cause the Ritual you can cleans yourself pretty easy , Instead i use either the extra Mana slotable to equalize mana and sta to almost the same pool size, or I play around with some "healer" CPs like, if you heal somone lower then 25% you grant a 11k barrier, cause it works with Ritual, Fokus, and even Winters Respite. All for all, its a solid Build for almost everything in the game, you might not have the 95% resist buff like a DK but alot other advantages, and you can tank like an Oldscool-tank. Guides are Fine to read, but if you want to tank in game then I always say "Be a Tank, dont play one" meaning you have to test and try alot things for your own to fit ur own play style and to compare things between. English is not my native language, so you can keep typos or gramma issues xD
Those are sets that allow the group taunt tho, thus, no natural group taunt abilities in the game. Furthermore, why waste the set bonus slot on that, when you can be much more useful wearing a different set. You're already most likely aggroing and taunting the adds that matter anyways. And for boss fights, what use will the group taunt give you?
NO AOE Taunt.? yeah you are right if we talk about skill beside of Frost clench. But i use Tormentor set + Stampede and i can taunt more than 8 mobs at once. Back bar with 2h Cyrodil crest for quick Heal (10k with my dk). You can also use Vateshran shield + choking talon to pull all mobs and taunt with stampede :) major and minor maim in bonus :) I really think this is the best set-up in term of clear a 4 man dungeon.
ESO is the first MMO I got into. I didn’t even know about the specific roles like a tank or dps but picked the DK because I thought he was dope. But after a few years of playing and learning the mechanics and lots of research I still suck at Tanking
Deltia, can you do some decoding for PVP tanks? How can they survive solo against what seems like 6 attackers? Just break down the basics. And also break down how to take them down? Thanks for any consideration, I know if you you want to do it you will crush it.
It's really comes down to gear/buff stacking. Take a Necro tank, they can get minor/major protection and the spirit for another 10% with crazy sustain. How to take them down? CC, it always come down to stunning them on cool down with things like streak, fossilize or something that drops their block. You gotta drain their stam #1 priority.
Ssshh.. No one from the stream tell the rest that he was like 1 wipe away from giving up on the castle thorn hard mode lol. Seriously tho great vid. I feel like the one thing you maybe missed touching on is enchants and using a back bar aoe for crusher etc but definitely a great guide.
Yeah the back bar frost staff is the way to go. I'm broke for a PA ice! And hey I just had to say "one more wipe that's it" to clear anything it always works.
@@ethanabla2509 if it's not worth doing because there are far better options, can you consider it usable? Reworking your entire tank build and cutting it's efficiency and group value dramatically just to allow for a bit of an ape taunt isn't worthwhile.

Great video but for me I prefer my warden sword and shield and back at ice staff I can hold block indefinitely and I get restored stamina when I heal my teammates and I heal myself aswell also I just use ice staff to make enemies stay in place just using blockade and warden ice icicles with no effort and just pull any who are far it's super easy to tank even HMs, when they don't need a tank I just put a light armor set and do dps since it's a DPS build because I have all Magicka stat and spell mundus.
@@sukuwuzudu try using mighty chudan monster set. This frees up a skill, reduces magika consumption and makes the Templar mobile. You can slot radiant ward or power of the light. You'll lose some stamina recovery but I'm at 27k stamina and with heavy attacks it's really not needed. I find this is far more effective on classes where the major resolve skill doesn't offer any group utility e.g. dragonknight, necro and maybe sorc. The mage skill balance is a great replacement for major resolve skills. I always aim for 30-32k resistance, 20k magika, 36k health and 27k stamina.
@@sukuwuzudu you should look over my written guide here in the comments, Templar IS a TANK !! if you know how to play and what to do, "Be a Tank, dont play one"
Have you guys read my com right?I told him, that after Rune Focus rework, that was at the Release of blackwood, templar tank is again playable. Am I dumb or what? XD
I like using my templar and sorcerer tanks, but I keep hearing that I need to run a DK if I wish to do harder content such as trials... It's a bit frustraring, because they are my favorite classes.
You don't need a dk, but it is true that dk and necro are more efficient, but in practice you can use anything. You will need meta classes only if you want some kind of leaderboard or that kind of stuff.
Tanks are Drummers. They start and maintain the tempo of the song, and keep the band on beat. As soon as drums stop, you just have a bunch of melodies with much less pulse. Might be okay in some contexts, but you just need a drummerfor harder content like playing shows at a bar gig. It's remarkable how much the roles of a four-man group lineup with the roles of a four-man band

@@GamingNormaly technically yes, but it’s not something that shows up on the UI there are mechanics for soft taunts such as if you’ve done massive amounts of healing or dps in a short time, I do believe certain abilities count as a soft taunt. I could be wrong but from my experience it seems to work that way. I mained dk tank for a decent sized guild(we had about 200 people at one point).
With tanks having only single target tuants I feel the dps and healer roles should be using way more CC and buffs. Instead every skill on both bars are damage only. Tanking has always been my favorite role, but I feel they take us for granted
nobody else but the tank should slot CC skills in ESO, due to the CC immunity. It is very frustrating as a tank when you try to stack the mobs but you can't because a sorcerer dd decided to streak through the pack
I generally tank in mmos, but after playing ESO I really question if there any need of a tank here with how groups are clearing the instant , not able to keep all mobs focused on you felt really bad . Thanks for the guide I see it is not expected of a tank here
Yea no, here, tank is in charge of the boss, big adds, or hard ass hitting enemies. Everything else is extra is you aggro. And is fine. But generally dps should be taking care of those extra adds not on you. They should also be able to stay alive and/or be healed while taking on those small adds.
Lord Warden, Ebon, and Powerful Assault with max magicika regen (Atronach mundus) and max health (all points into) using Orzorga's Red Frothgar weaving igneous shield for stam regen between other responsibilities. Would this be Deltia approved?
Not a fan of Warden because it's not mobile, not a fan of Ebon unless people constantly die. I don't run regen because you can use balance from mages guild and have infinite magicka. Just my two cents.

I find myself having to be a tank, dps, and healer in most of my groups. Being a tank, i nornally have to heal myself, and most dps are all over the place. I also hate it when they move way past me, and I have to sprint to catch up. I personally think it's the responsibility of the healer to keep everyone alive. I could be wrong, but I think the tank should taunt the boss and any high damage mobs and keep the aggro on the tank. To those who are dps and like to talk smack to tanks, if you don't like how a tank is performing, then you play as a tank and quit complaining. This one dps the other day was cussing me out even though we got through the veteran dungeon.

For CP I use the Defensive Slotables excpet for the dmg over time, cause the Ritual you can cleans yourself pretty easy , Instead i use either the extra Mana slotable to equalize mana and sta to almost the same pool size, or I play around with some "healer" CPs like, if you heal somone lower then 25% you grant a 11k barrier, cause it works with Ritual, Fokus, and even Winters Respite.
Honestly, its really discouraging when every single build online requires hundreds of hours of grinding.
Very good and concise truth.
Again, thank you
Deltia, can you do some decoding for PVP tanks? How can they survive solo against what seems like 6 attackers?
Just break down the basics. And also break down how to take them down?
Thanks for any consideration, I know if you you want to do it you will crush it.
It's really comes down to gear/buff stacking. Take a Necro tank, they can get minor/major protection and the spirit for another 10% with crazy sustain. How to take them down? CC, it always come down to stunning them on cool down with things like streak, fossilize or something that drops their block. You gotta drain their stam #1 priority.
@@Deltiasgaming thanks!
that was great info about tanking has a tank for me main toon i run a hybird build for that reason because you can use diffener abling like inner
No aoe taunt? What about the tormentor set with an aoe charge attack like the templar charge or stampede?
Why would u use tormentor over a set like yolnakhriin or EC? You wouldnt
This is "in general video." I didn't go over every option and set.
@@feradus9414 I never said that I would, I was just pointing out that you can indeed aoe taunt
@@ethanabla2509 ah ok
@@ethanabla2509 if it's not worth doing because there are far better options, can you consider it usable? Reworking your entire tank build and cutting it's efficiency and group value dramatically just to allow for a bit of an ape taunt isn't worthwhile.

Nice video, thx!
Good vid , nice advice. I do have issues how the game so de-values healers though.
Cheers for these vids m8 ur a legend

Brilliant video 💯
Thank you 🙌
Great video but for me I prefer my warden sword and shield and back at ice staff I can hold block indefinitely and I get restored stamina when I heal my teammates and I heal myself aswell also I just use ice staff to make enemies stay in place just using blockade and warden ice icicles with no effort and just pull any who are far it's super easy to tank even HMs, when they don't need a tank I just put a light armor set and do dps since it's a DPS build because I have all Magicka stat and spell mundus.
Yeah, love my Warden Tank!
Yep it's a great setup though I lack PA Frost staff.
good video very helpful thank you
I remember when Templar tanks were a thing , not an alt tank :(
With Rune Focus rework hes again playable
XD
@@sukuwuzudu haha thought I replied to OP 🙈
I like using my templar and sorcerer tanks, but I keep hearing that I need to run a DK if I wish to do harder content such as trials... It's a bit frustraring, because they are my favorite classes.
You don't need a dk, but it is true that dk and necro are more efficient, but in practice you can use anything. You will need meta classes only if you want some kind of leaderboard or that kind of stuff.
I just started playing tank today I wish it would just have a toggle like final fantasy 14 where you can just go into tank stance and pull everything.
Crusher enchant should always go on the staff bar, for full value.
So are taunted mobs forever stuck to you or do they wander off after a while? (Like Threat in WoW?)

@@mixasfylma8854 I play healer In the EU.
They have timers on taunts they’ll become untaunted after a while so you’ll have to reapply as you would a dot effect
@@pyr060bl1n Can you hold aggro without a taunt? Or is it a required debuff?
@@GamingNormaly technically yes, but it’s not something that shows up on the UI there are mechanics for soft taunts such as if you’ve done massive amounts of healing or dps in a short time, I do believe certain abilities count as a soft taunt. I could be wrong but from my experience it seems to work that way. I mained dk tank for a decent sized guild(we had about 200 people at one point).
Literally tried dps and started yawning nonstop. I’m definitely a tank main🛡️
@@usualsurrender5298 thanks for that, I never thought of that. Makes alot of sense
So wait does a tank not dump points into Health when leveling?
Can a sorcerer be a good tank I only have one character I don’t want to reply everything 18 times
It can
I generally tank in mmos, but after playing ESO I really question if there any need of a tank here with how groups are clearing the instant , not able to keep all mobs focused on you felt really bad .
If you mean normal dungeons, probably no. But try to do a vet dlc with no tank hahaha
Been working on vUGhm no healer run and finding out slippery is a must.
Lord Warden, Ebon, and Powerful Assault with max magicika regen (Atronach mundus) and max health (all points into) using Orzorga's Red Frothgar weaving igneous shield for stam regen between other responsibilities. Would this be Deltia approved?
You don't need ebon anymore 😅
Not a fan of Warden because it's not mobile, not a fan of Ebon unless people constantly die. I don't run regen because you can use balance from mages guild and have infinite magicka. Just my two cents.
I just saw your 6 month gym progression, and I was wondering how you’re doing now

Deltia, could you ask the developers if they could provide 1 or 2 more slottable star slots in the current CP system?

Actually there is a set which does aoe taunt.
A tank should only know 2 things- hold taunt, don't die...everything else is extra

Stop calling it Selfish Tanking. Its single target tanking or value added group tanking. Can both single target tanking and value added group tanking be done by one player. Depends on context and content with group comp known. Ask yourself will a dead tank add value to a group no matter what style off tanking. Team Spirit. Just like tanking is supposed to be. Not that aoe aggro bs that they added to WoW and other games that made tanking boring for the most part.
Thats y why i dont tank i suck at it and to much work
No AoE taunts? LMAO... Stampede plus tormentor is a FLYING mass taunt!!!
