fun fact: when the lady starts singing her part, she's actually incorporating a griko song that's called "Are mou Rindineddha" ("Who knows, little swallow"), a lamentation popularized as a migrant folk song that originated from a 1900 poem about a student living far away in the north and feeling homesick for his native land. Griko is a very particular, very ancient linguistic minority of a remote part of Puglia (Salento, southern italy) that has kept intact a stunning connection to the ancient greek language, since southern italy was once a greek colony. Both these are very beautiful songs, and the result is a lovely mashup. Notte della Taranta is one of the greatest festivals we have in italy. I also happen to love Mahmood's voice and interpretation ♡ this is the most wholesome thing i've listened to in a while. I wish we could hear more and more arabic popular melodies from him!

night of the taranta.Taranta is a traditional popular dance from the south of Italy"Puglia".Taranta comes from "tarantula".You dance after a tarantula bite. It´s a kind of dance trance. They make a big party evey year in Puglia.

Explaining what Notte della Taranta is, is a very difficult task because nothing like that exist everywhere. This event started as a one time event in the last. It was a popular event occurring at the end of August celebrating the cultural phenomenon of tarantism, which has deep roots in the culture of a small part of southern Italy. The phenomenon has been studied and is being studied nowadays. This event now has an international relevance.

La notte della Taranta is the biggest italian folk festival ... this year without audience because of the pandemia. ( normally 150.000 people every year, free entrance). The location of this festival is in Melpignano, in extreme South east of Italy ( the heel of Italy) . In this song the male singer sings in arab language .. the female singer (Alessandra Caiulo) sings in grico ( Ancient greek) a language of local population in this little area of Italy.

Grico is not ancient Greek. It is a linguistic minority in Southern Italy originated from Ancient Greek that also has lots for borrowings from the local Italic dialect of Salento.

I would like to suggest you to listen to "Crisi Metropolitana" by Giuni Russo, a crazy piece, a musical chimera, impossible to imagine it yet it exists
