@Issa Wheeler DUDE I’m an American who believes people can shit on the government if they want to. There was a point in time where the British killed Americans (before they considered independent and Americans) because they spoke out against them and spread anti government propaganda. The British I’m sure believed that they were giving the Americans a good life and thought the people who spoke out against them should be punished. So, when Americans became independent they made sure to include free speech in their laws. People can spread whatever propaganda they want for a reason. America doesn’t ”give” people a better life. People work hard, Make their own damn money, and build their own damn empires here. American law gives you the opportunity to do many things that other countries might not allow, like use of free speech, but people give themselves a better life, or the people around them who care about them do.
Seeing videos of American people get arrested for jaywalking really confuses me. In my country, even when you're about to cross a multi-laned avenue, you just don't go from the crossing. You look left, then right, if there are cars coming you look for a gap/calculate the time they need to reach your spot (or not, if you're a brave one) and just run like you're being chased by some crazy murderer with an axe.
In my country (it's not really a country, just a small island), the system was so fucked at some point that when I was walking with a friend, we tried to cross a road, the light was green for pedestrians but cars were just speeding around. We only were able to cross when the light turned red for pedestrians. I will never forget that.

@Toby Allis The diversity I reference here is Trevor, who lived in another country, making humourous comparisons to what he's experienced here in the US. These differences are refreshing and insightful. If I am around, watch, listen to people who look like me and have had the same/similar experiences as me it can grow a bit stale. I enjoy both: same and difference. Diversity to me is experiencing directly and/or learning from others, like I did listening to Trevor, who experienced things I have not.

I had the exact same thing, I grew up in Germany & coming to America when I was 18, was INSANE. I watched the news & they had a report on a local cat on tv - they have zero global coverage. In Germany you get global events first thing in the morning, like every news program was about global news & then local. In America, it's only local, it's really nuts. I did geek out the first time I ordered pizza. At the time Germany didn't have any pizza delivery, no food delivery, like unless you were assigned to a disability food delivery thing. So the first time I ordered pizza it was from Pizza Hut & they were like "What would you like?" and I was like ... "pizza!" and they were like "yea, what kind?" I was like ... "uh, what?" and they were so patient with me, bless her heart - patiently explained what pizza was & different toppings. It was the best food I ever tasted. That was 20 yrs ago I still love Pizza Hut, and the news is still fucked. I had the same exact issue with buffalo wings, I thought it was buffalo too. Bless you & thank you for speaking up on everything, you're appreciated. ♥
Kitten -- you were watching the LOCAL news. Of course there is no global coverage on the local news. There are two separate news programs. One is strictly local and the other is national and international.
@@peterpiper7441 How do people choose what to watch I mean local vs national)? And does local news cover what's happening nationally as well or only the local news?
Perhaps for Americans Trevor is just hilarious, but for all the international audience of the Daily Show is also a guy who shares our surprise to the the deeply weird things your society has. Most talkshow hosts just ignore them, but Trevor is like "Oh no this shit's weird"
I'm from St. Vincent and I picked up on a couple of things he said before watching this. This is the first time, though, that I'm hearing of a government shutdown.
All societies are “weird” in one way or another. Many of us in the U.S., especially those who’ve traveled or have lived in culturally diverse cities, have picked up on some of our strange customs and predominant beliefs. And yes, our chickens are way too big. They’ve been genetically modified to grow really fast in a short amount of time. It’s actually pretty cruel, but government and big time ag lobbyists have played a significant role in keeping the public blind regarding where the food comes from (ag-gag laws). People are very detached and it’s frustrating. Overall, the United States is a wonderful country despite its cruel history (as is true with many countries). Things are changing, albeit slowly, but there is progress :)
@@kel5710 Sure, every country looks weird to any other by nature. It wasn't an attack, It is just that since american culture is so widespread we tend to take it as the measuring yard for 'normal' behavior and social norms, and it just shouldn't. The acceptance of diversity should be the measure.
I adore him. He says "Volkswagen" the correct way, with a German tongue (as it is a German word), then re-says it for the Americans in their dialect. 14:16
i agree that that's true but i have the exact same conversations with international students at my uni.. just having people from a different background or country causes these kinds of long conversations because you have so many things to compare and common things to discover.

Same in Germany. If you call the fire Department for a cat sitting in a tree they will tell you ,,Well we can come and get the cat out, no problem, but that would cost you a couple thousand Euro. Do you still want us to come? No? Okay then have a nice day😁
I prefer "Folksvoggen" vs. "Vokeswaggen", but you should see the looks I get here in America when I pronounce it the correct way. Then again, a white complained to me when I was briefly talking with an Ethiopian clerk at a 7-Eleven, "What are you doin' talkin' to him?" I think the clerk and I looked at each other and I thought, "White guy, because the Ethiopian is more polite and more intelligent than you are." (Btw, I'm also white.) Sometimes I wish I had brown skin or black skin instead of pink skin. I'd feel alot less ashamed.
Me too. I happened to have the captions on & it correctly translated the American pronunciation but made a complete hash of Trevor's SA / correct version.😆
I love how he said it correctly first then "corrected" himself by mispronouncing it so the US audience would know what he was referring to lol. As a South African the mispronounciation grates me so much lol.
It explains the success of a series like 'Mork & Mindy'; it's always refreshing to hear an outsiders view on things we take for granted; the good AND the bad.
It wasn't very effective, unfortunately... Widely regarded as a failure/get out of jail free card for Apartheid murderers. But there does need to be something to 'start the conversation'
Yes, you do. And not just about black people. About the McCarthy period. About political persecution. About the destruction of Native American life. About the persecution and illtreatment of mexicans. There are so many skeletons in the history of the US that need to be dealt with.

Let me guess your from Africa and you went to the USA for a better life.
Lol same
Absolutely right!!
Yea, and if you die, it's your own fault. No-one gona arrest you for endangering yourself
So true
In my country (it's not really a country, just a small island), the system was so fucked at some point that when I was walking with a friend, we tried to cross a road, the light was green for pedestrians but cars were just speeding around. We only were able to cross when the light turned red for pedestrians. I will never forget that.

And this, my friends, is why we need diversity in our lives. Different perspectives give us new thoughts. And sometimes highlight similarities.
Which is why South Africans miss Trevor the most (other than his family).

Erm, you could definitely order pizza in Germany 20 years ago, what are you talking about.

@@kel5710 oh hell no man, I've been around as well, you guys are way werider...
@@Moe3ter Weirdness is just in in our DNA.
@@kel5710 Sure, every country looks weird to any other by nature. It wasn't an attack, It is just that since american culture is so widespread we tend to take it as the measuring yard for 'normal' behavior and social norms, and it just shouldn't. The acceptance of diversity should be the measure.

I prefer "Folksvoggen" vs. "Vokeswaggen", but you should see the looks I get here in America when I pronounce it the correct way. Then again, a white complained to me when I was briefly talking with an Ethiopian clerk at a 7-Eleven, "What are you doin' talkin' to him?" I think the clerk and I looked at each other and I thought, "White guy, because the Ethiopian is more polite and more intelligent than you are." (Btw, I'm also white.)
