1. The commentators mentioned how the Kansas City defense looked tired after the 49ers' 4th quarter run. Taking the ball first in overtime was a way to keep the pressure on them. Tony Romo even said that if he were Kansas and won the coin toss, he'd go first to give the defense some rest. 2. Shanahan's thought process was the 49ers score a touchdown first, then if KC scored a touchdown, the the 49ers would get the first try for sudden death. 3. Hindsight is 20/20. Had the 49ers scored a touchdown or forced KC to kick a field goal, they would have looked like geniuses for taking the ball first with the first chance for sudden death.
I think it was egregious to take the ball first in OT under the new rules and just for the fun of it I actually did the math and guess what there was a 33.3% chance that it went to suddenly death but a 44.4% chance that KC would win because they received the ball second, btw there was only a 22% chance of SF actually winning the game by taking the ball first. I did that calculation in less than 5 mins with paper and a pen. You're a HC in the Superbowl and you're telling me that no one on your coaching team or analytics department had 5 mins to take out a pen and paper and did what I did and say hey, the probability of us winning this game or taking it to sudden death is far lower if we take the ball first. When you add in the fact that his own players weren't aware of the new OT rules for the playoffs and then when you factor in the fact he has blown three 10 pt leads in Superbowls he honestly should be fired. Regardless of his recent success because what it shows is that he'll always be a bridesmaid, but never a bride. And again to emphasize my point, it took me only 5 mins with pen and paper to prove this was arguably the dumbest decision in Superbowl history which can rival Pete Caroll's decision to throw the football instead of running it on 2nd and Goal when the Seahawks played the Patriots in the Superbowl.
You have 2 bags each containing 9 berries. In bag A, 4 will definitely kill you, 2 will definitely not kill you and 3 may or may not kill you. In bag B, 2 will definitely kill you, 4 will not kill you and 3 may or may not kill you. Which bag will you pull a berry out of?
According to rumor the chiefs' plan was to go for 2 if the 49ers scored first...dangerous but I guess about all you can do if all the 49'ers need is a field goal to win... :)
Going second means it's automatically 4 down territory even in the worst case scenario. When you have a good offense, that certainty is a big advantage, giving you more options on 2nd and 3rd down. For example, on a 3rd and 7, you're not necessarily limited to pass options, which means the other team can't just pin their ears back and come at you.
If you give the Chiefs the ball first, the benefit is you’ll know what you need to do. By taking the ball first, if you can match them on the first possession, you now have the advantage of getting the ball twice to their one, and ending the game with a walk-off field goal. There’s no wrong decision until the game is over and you look back.
That was a great game. It's unfortunate that 1 team had to lose. The niners should be proud of Brock Purdy. He was outstanding. Something tells me he will be back playing in the Super Bowl in the near future
Don't count on it too much. Namath was only 25 when the Jets played in Super Bowl III and people thought he would play in many more, he never did, one and done.

You see what just happened not even Steve Young understands the new overtime rules in the playoffs Kyle Shanahan didn’t either in an overtime situation in the playoffs. It does not benefit you to get the ball first why the other team still has a chance to match you a touchdown does not beat you in the new playoff overtime rule that’s why the 49ers made a mistake. They won the coin toss. They should’ve gave the ball to Kansas City, allow them to do whatever they had to do. At least you know what you have to do. Kansas City was never going to accept the ball even if they would’ve won the coin toss, they said if Kansas City would’ve won the coin toss, they were going to give it to the 49ers, and if San Francisco would’ve went down, score the touchdown, the Chiefs would’ve match the touchdown and gone for two points to beat them People must understand the new playoff overtime rule is different than the regular season rule

OT has actually changed twice since he played lol. I'm sure he knows it's no longer sudden death like his era, but it definitely sounds like he thought a TD ends the game right away (the system that existed from I think 2011 through 2021).
It doesn't make a diff who gets the ball first or second. You have a defense. If they make a stop. Then you have a chance. The goal is a touchdown not a field goal.
Why is everyone blaming the coach for trusting that his offense would score a TD in their 1st OT possesion. Niners should've just scored the damn TD, so that even if KC matched it then all he needs is a FG on the following possession to win. Blame him for kicking the FG/not going for it on 4th down, or blame the defense for not making a 4th down stop the way the Rams did vs the Bengals, but not for taking the ball first in OT.
The fact that Steve Young didn't know the rules is a moot point. Shanahan knew the rules and I still think it was a good idea to go try and score a TD. The defense was tired, two DBs were hurt on the prior series, and they needed to keep their offense off the field. Scoring a TD there would have put more pressure on the Chiefs and it would have put the Niners in a great position to win the game even if they did end up matching TDs. Imagine if they gave it to the Chiefs, they scored a TD, and then the Niners turned it over on downs to end the game. @@JohnBowl14690 if they can remember plays, they can remember that OT in the playoffs means each team gets a possession, regardless if a TD is scored on the first possession, and that the game doesn't end after 15 minutes if it's still tied or the 2nd possession is not complete. The entirety of the difference in one sentence, lol.
Why couldn't the NFL just admit college got it right, both teams have equal chance in OT. Instead they change overtime but accomplish nothing. Either way every coach and player has no excuse not knowing the rules.
If you give it to Mahomes and he drives down for a td , then you’ve got the pressure of matching that with a td, then all they need is a field goal to win. I’d rather it be the other way around. We almost did it if not for feliciano being injured and burford blowing his assignment on the critical 3rd and 4. I swear we’re always snake bit with injuries 🤦♂️
Come on Steve, if you’re going to comment, then know the rules yourself. The Chiefs would have had the ball even if the Niners scored a touchdown. Giving them the ball last means you are letting the know what they have to do.
Young does not realize that the overtime rules had been changed- SF was not going to win the game with the initial drive in OT…KC was going to get the ball regardless of whether SF scored a FG or TD.
I've been a football fan since a child and I've always been a follower of the game, i even knew the rules, to be a true fan of the sport, be a follower to.
Back in Young's day the decision in overtime was a no-brainer since "defense wins championships". Every team obviously wanted to go on defense first. Wait a minute---every team actually wanted to go on offense first. Offense wins championships !!
Strongly disagree with everything he says. First of all, Brock was not the problem AT ALL. So he can definitely put Purdy in that list of elite quarterbacks. I’m disappointed he didn’t. Secondly, it’s clear by what he’s saying that he doesn’t understand the new overtime rules.
Steve Young doesn't appear to realize that the new rules mean KC would get the ball either way, either first or second, but they're getting the ball even if you take it and score a TD.
That dont matter at all. Only way if you knew you was gonna try 2 point conversion. Mahomes said they already decided to go for 2 thiugh obvious they didnt have to because purdy was held to a field goal.
Dan didn't correct him. Scratch my head, I couldn't tell if I heard Young correctly. How could he not know about the rules changes, especially right after the game when we find out niners players didn't know about them?
@@broadcasttttableUGH first of all, Steve isn't an active player lol, and at the beginning of this video he gave him a choice, is this Steve the fan or Steve the analyst and Steve clearly did not choose analyst. Don't know why people are getting bent out of shape over this 😂
oh my goodness. I really hope in the full interview that Dan breaks it to Steve that no, even if you score a td on the first possession, Patrick STILL gets the ball! My lord, how can these people still not know the rules!!! It's not that complicated.
Here is what doomed the 49ers- CMC fumble on the first drive,The bad luck on the punt return fiasco, letting Chris Jones run untouched through the line and the missed XP. Kyle didnt choke and the 49ers played a tough hard game. Our defense was exhausted and needed a break. They were also playing really soft defense at the end of regulation and let Mahomes carve them up to tie the game and almost win it near the end of regulation. One team has to lose and unfortunately it was the 49ers. Im proud of my 9ers and Purdy and i think Kyle and Purdy will get to the promised land one day soon.
It was not bad luck on the punt return. Those blockers set their marks based on where the punt returner is standing. The punt returner should have tracked the punt better and moved. He ended up standing in the perfect position which put his blockers directly under where the ball is coming down. You never stand five to ten yards behind where the ball is coming down. You either go catch the ball, or you clear out as a way to warn your blockers to also clear out.
I'm confused. With the new rules both teams get a possession, even if you score a touchdown. The 49ers didn't know this, Steve Young is a former 49er and it seems like he doesn't know it either. I knew this and I write code for a living. Now if I were the quarterback and got the ball first, I would fumble the snap and the other team would run it in for a score. The game would be over at this point because I had a possession and didn't score and the other team got possession and did score. Teams could also trade touchdowns for 3 hours because it can't end in a tie. The advantage with kicking the ball away is that you would know what you have to do. If the other team scored with a field goal then you would know you only need a field goal to keep it going. If they scored a touchdown you would know you would have to go for it even if it was 4th and 40.
I think Dan Patrick feels a little embarrassed for Steve Young because base on Young’s explanation he’s clueless on the new OT rules as it applies to post season play.
Steve Young is right that only teams with mobile QBs will be winning Super Bowls in the coming years. Purdy is mobile, but moronic coaching staff won't let him run when needed.
Exactly right. Heck, if Mahomes wins the coin flip, he will take the ball; every single time. It doesn't matter that he can't get a first down but more than 1 out of 3 possessions etc....this is different; this is for the game right here, and Mahomes believes not only in himself, but his team. KC, KNOWS they will drive down the field. SF did the right thing, they just messed up once they did.
Mahomes was going to face a clearly gassed defense either way. Letting KC get to OT was the big error. Coming away with only a field goal at the 10 yard line was the kill shot..
Steve Young doesn’t even understand the OT rules, one day after the entire football world has been talking about it. And the interviewer NOT pointing this out - worst interviewer ever.
Wait I’m so confused so what exactly is the rule? Bcuz I remember back in the day first one to score wins but then they changed it to both teams has to have a chance to score? What it at now ?
So what you're saying is, "4 down territory" is a mystery concept. Because if you take the ball first, there is time on the clock. If you score, the other team needs to score and punch in a 2 pt conversion and the game is over. It's all 4 down territory for the opposing team after you scored. I'm not a coach or a scientist and it wasn't hard to figure out.
What's unbelievable is you assuming that he needs to know the rules when he's not even an active player, and he literally says in the beginning of the video that he is speaking not as an analyst.
Yeah, modern day quarterbacks are using Young as blueprint. Not a running quarterback but a mobile quarterback. You run to get your receivers more time. But go for the first down when the game/SB is on the line. See John Elway. Mahomes wasn’t the 1st, but he copied it to the ti. Young would’ve been the GOAT if he wasn’t backing Montana for years. Purdy has all the skills, only need the experience and the heart to get it. The difference between Mahomes and Purdy in SB58. I know Purdy will be back.
The title of the video should be “Is Steve Young aware of the new OT rules?”

Jesus Steve
It’s amazing that the analysts, coaches and players don’t know the OT rules.
Kyle Shannahan Steve, called a horrible second half they didn’t capitalize on the Chiefs mistakes
Oh Dan, weren’t you the guy that predicted Brock Purdy wouldn’t be the Niner’s QB by the end of the season
What’s in the water in San Francisco? Steve, come on, buddy.
Why couldn't the NFL just admit college got it right, both teams have equal chance in OT. Instead they change overtime but accomplish nothing. Either way every coach and player has no excuse not knowing the rules.
Sounds like Steve Young doesn’t understand the new overtime rules either.
Lol. It wouldn't have mattered. Secondly, in the beginning of the video Steve says he's not speaking as an analyst.
I knew the rules and I don't play football. It was the coaches stupidity for not informing the team before the season started.
Young does not realize that the overtime rules had been changed- SF was not going to win the game with the initial drive in OT…KC was going to get the ball regardless of whether SF scored a FG or TD.
Steve Young my favorite QB of all time. My guy, this is bad, no one in the 9ers organization knows the OT rules lol
I've been a football fan since a child and I've always been a follower of the game, i even knew the rules, to be a true fan of the sport, be a follower to.
I didn't know the overtime rules and I'm a true fan.
And the host doesn't correct Young's lack of understanding of the OT rule.
Back in Young's day the decision in overtime was a no-brainer since "defense wins championships". Every team obviously wanted to go on defense first. Wait a minute---every team actually wanted to go on offense first. Offense wins championships !!
If you want to see what Dan will look like in 10 years, watch Downton Abbey season 6 episode 3 @ 42:37 mark. 😀
Holy crap, does anyone affiliated with the 49ers know the OT rules?
Strongly disagree with everything he says. First of all, Brock was not the problem AT ALL. So he can definitely put Purdy in that list of elite quarterbacks. I’m disappointed he didn’t. Secondly, it’s clear by what he’s saying that he doesn’t understand the new overtime rules.
Purdy hasn't been in the league long enough to be called elite.
Steve Young doesn't appear to realize that the new rules mean KC would get the ball either way, either first or second, but they're getting the ball even if you take it and score a TD.
That was the dumbest call to take the ball first when the ref had just explained that both teams get a possession unless defense scores on a drive.
Not at all
That dont matter at all. Only way if you knew you was gonna try 2 point conversion. Mahomes said they already decided to go for 2 thiugh obvious they didnt have to because purdy was held to a field goal.
I didn’t see the show so I would love to know if Dan corrected him and how Steve reacted to that. Would have been compelling TV
Dan didn't correct him. Scratch my head, I couldn't tell if I heard Young correctly. How could he not know about the rules changes, especially right after the game when we find out niners players didn't know about them?
And he’s a lawyer! 😝😂😆🤣🤣😆😆😂😝😝😂😆😆
Dan, to my surprise, didn't correct him. I even listened the following day to see if he would bring this up. Nope.
@@travelnguy2002 Dumb and Dumber!
@@broadcasttttableUGH first of all, Steve isn't an active player lol, and at the beginning of this video he gave him a choice, is this Steve the fan or Steve the analyst and Steve clearly did not choose analyst. Don't know why people are getting bent out of shape over this 😂
They should have just called it a tie. Everyone gets a trophy.
Not having a winner doesn't work in the States.
They should have went for touchdown in overtime giving Pat the ball with a minute left we knew it was over
Lol you don’t know the rules. Pat still get the ball and go get 8
I've heard different view points. I agree with all of them. As usual, if it had worked they would be geniuses. IF.
It doesn't matter who gets the ball 1st or 2nd
oh my goodness.
Exactly!! 🎯
Well said my friend ☝🏿
Exactly ☝🏿
Didn’t Kyle waste the first 3 possessions of the second half by only handing off to CMC 1 time? That is some moronic play calling no.
I don't know if it's just he's so heartbroken or if he just can't keep up anymore cuz he's a damn lawyer guys
Damn!!!! Even ex 49ers players don’t even know the over time rules! WTF 😳?
Evidently, Steve doesn’t understand the new overtime rules either!😮
Ah, Steve - are you aware that BOTH teams get the ball in playoff OT, even if the team that gets the ball first scores a TD? Hello Steve?
Mahomes knew them because he was the reason for the season. Maybe Andy. But not many others.
Former players don't know the new rules.
So in other words Steve you’re saying we need a Mobile QB to keep up..
Steve Young is right that only teams with mobile QBs will be winning Super Bowls in the coming years. Purdy is mobile, but moronic coaching staff won't let him run when needed.
Kyle Shanahan is like Boeing, got all the right pieces... yet can't get it together.
How was Stafford able to win a Super Bowl while not being a mobile QB? Steve like all Niner fans can't admit Purdy is not elite.
I didn't know till the day after either and I'm like the smartest person I know.
49ers mistake was getting a FG instead of a Touchdown. Also 49er defense was great till it counted. Sad but true.
NOBODY IN SAN FRANCISCO KNOWS THE RULES
Mahomes was going to face a clearly gassed defense either way. Letting KC get to OT was the big error. Coming away with only a field goal at the 10 yard line was the kill shot..
Steve Young doesn’t even understand the OT rules, one day after the entire football world has been talking about it. And the interviewer NOT pointing this out - worst interviewer ever.
Wait I’m so confused so what exactly is the rule? Bcuz I remember back in the day first one to score wins but then they changed it to both teams has to have a chance to score? What it at now ?
Wait, you don't know the rule? Oh no, the ones claiming to be "true fans" are going to set you straight! 😂
Did he even watch the game? They made it very clear that a TD on the opening OT drive wouldn’t win the game 😂😂
Well, concussion did take his career away. Can't blame him if he forgot about new OT rules
Steve forgot Stafford.
I guess Steve Young doesn’t understand the OT rules either🤷🏻♂️
Steve Young not knowing the rules just like the rest of the niners team. Unbelievable
What's unbelievable is you assuming that he needs to know the rules when he's not even an active player, and he literally says in the beginning of the video that he is speaking not as an analyst.
@@kbanghart I’m not an active player
@@bb-1359 ok
@@bb-1359 cool
What? Woud have liked to see Dan Patrick enlighten him.
Even Steve the Analyst didn't know the rules- amazing!
Except in the beginning of this video he said he wasn't speaking as an analyst. 👍
