Good to see "real world" testing with the skill level of most average golfers demonstrating how you can use a range ball to get over greenside bunkers easier than a more expensive pro-v1 , and how a prov1 should be your ball of choice if you get stuck under low hanging tree branches around the green.
I am 62 years old. I play to a 5 handicap. I watch most of my league playing tour balls, and always coming up short, both on approaches and chips. They routinely play sand wedge for chips. I usually play 2 piece balls, and use more bump and run shots using 8 iron or higher.
Great info again lads 👍🏼 I actually use a two piece ball so I get the run out. I’m around a 14 hcp and my accuracy was always falling short of the target so the ball made the change I needed and I have better results chipping in from around the greens and from 100 yards and in I can still get the stopping power 😉
I switched from a 2 piece ball to a premium ball a few years ago and was freaked out by the launch difference on partial shots. This test shows that even though they look different in the air, both balls will stop, they just stop in different ways. Taylormade Tour Response is a good “gateway” ball to anyone looking to transition from a surlyn to a urethane cover ball.
Love that .. fit the ball to the short game and the longer clubs to the ball .. and .. invest a couple bucks in having practice balls that are the ball that you play ..great job boys!
Excellent video. Back in the 70s I used Spalding Hot Dots ("rocks") because that is all I could afford. My 7 iron was my go-to chipping club because I could run it close from anywhere. I still have a few Hot Dots in my practice bag of balls! They are still rocks and this video confirmed my suspicion that I should leave them out of the practice bag. In my last couple of recent rounds I used TP5s with my PW as my chipping weapon and the stopping power is very noticable over the other Taylormade balls I was using, especially the Distance+. The Tour Response gave much better control than the former, but not as good as the TP5. Yesterday I used a TP5x with a SW at an indoor range and I will see how it goes on the course next week, to complete my testing.
had a job relocation to Orlando and spent 100's of hours in the practice area. Hoping some videos show their scoring V. that sperate range is world class!!!
When it come to short shot....correction, any-type of shots, a good 3-4 piece ball is a must. Given the volume of options players have, their is no reason not to get them; moreover, buying mint or close to mint condition of the same ball so you can practice your short game.
Great video would have been good to have seen something like a Kirkland ball thrown into the mix for those of us on a slightly tighter budget that tends to loose a few
Micheal “ i really like that brush” , hint hint. Ian from past vid Micheal hitting his driver 20/30 yards further. But, oh that brush. Ian, Birthday gift i noticed you aren’t very aggressive through the ball. Is that because you would have difficulty controlling the low spin balls? Nice vid tks
I remember you guys saying to keep wedges under 30 degrees and I was ripping my hair out at the top tracer range cause I couldn't do it. Hopefully it was just the range ball keeping and I'm actually fine with a normal ball
Hey guys. Love the channel but definitely missing Matty boy. We all kind of know range balls don't spin. What would be more interesting is how low spin premium balls, (left dash, CS LS...) compare to their more traditional and direct competitors (ProV1, CS, TP5...).
Back in the fall I was in the middle of a practice session. Another player started chatting me. During our conversation he said "I'm shocked you are practicing short game with range balls." So of course I ask, "why is that?" He then said "the performance won't match your game ball so you are sorta wasting your time." Instantly it was an "ah-ha" moment.
Pick a ball and stick with it. And practice short game with that ball. Part of my pre-round warm-up is to hit delicate little pitches and 3-4 ft putts with my gamer balls. Try it.
@@canyonaro that’s what I’ve been doing since. It has paid off for sure. I also don’t putt to a hole. I put a tee into the ground at the edge of the practice green and putt to it from 3 sides. Mostly to get speed. Thanks for your reply.
Numbers are numbers can’t dispute them… however after every shot the camera view would switch to the view of the green and to be honest your proximity to hole was not any better with the premium ball vs the 2 piece ball
Remembering a Ben Hogan Icon review where there was discussion around throwing bean bags into greens with a higher spin ball. Would like to see some discussion around tee to green with high vs low spin balls. I don’t hit a lot of greens so would like to hear your take. Great test!
Two totally different swings for the range ball and premium ball. Seems like you manipulated your swing to dramatically change spin numbers. I'm not arguing provs spin more than a range ball but don't change your swing to achieve a desired goal.
@@golf007sd2 Second that... In my opinion it's also the softest feeling premium ball in the market. I don't play it, but I have a few that I chip in the living room with lol
Obviously a two piece ball is not going to spin as much as a premium ball but after watching this on every shot at 26 yards with the 2 piece ball the follow through was coming up above your shoulder creating a higher ball flight. attack angle wasn’t near as steep . Every shot with the premium ball the attack angle was steeper shaft angle much more forward and the follow through never got above waist high therefore pinching it causing a low flight that checks. I could hit a 2 piece just as low as a premium ball. But I understand your probably more showing it for the more beginner golfer. Great video tho
Question for you about premium balls with “practice” printed on them. Are they seconds and good enough to use in these kind of drills or just use old gamer balls? Also what exactly would make these balls seconds? Blemish, balance……
According the Titleist, their ‘practice’ ProV1 balls are identical to the retail version with very minor cosmetic differences. Can’t speak for other brands.
I wish using your own gamer balls on the short game areas was more common practice - I always feel like an ass hitting my own into a group of practice balls, then having to go onto the green and pick them out while 99% of other folks just hit from the big piles. Partly because of this (and partly out of laziness), I'll generally warm up my chipping/pitching pre-round with the range balls just focusing on contact and landing point, not worrying much about getting the roll out right. Only if i'm doing a dedicated short game practice session will I pull out my own balls and focus on full control
Why do you feel like an ass? Just do you. On league nights I always start my warm-up with three to five game balls on the designated pitching green and play around the world. Also helps in moving around and playing different lies as opposed to emptying half a range bucket from one place.
different chipping technique then you would see most really good players use... I know your tempo is kinda slow usually Ian but it looks like it would be hard to hit the low nipper with that technique and tempo
Nitro liquid golf balls are very versatile, they are very soft which means they have a good feel and the grooves of the club can also really grip the dimples and grip the ball, this adds some really good spin whether you're hitting a fade shot around a styime or you're getting some backspin to stop on the Green, the roll it has which is really useful around the green when chipping or smashing the ball off the tee to let it hit the Fairway and continue rolling for distance, try out the Nitro liquid balls they're really cool I also prefer the white finish ones because it's cleaner I also like the gold painted ones
Let me find out Ian isn’t just a hypebeast for golf clubs! Haha I could see him walking into TXG with a box logo on for sure. #supreme 😂 or maybe it’s Mike? Either way ✊🏾✊🏾
I saw at Walmart they sell Titleist Pro V 1 and Pro V1x refurbished for $19.98 / dozen. Could you guys maybe do a test using those versus new balls and see what the difference might be. Thank you.
I play off 11 but arccos says 4 on short game . My chipping is good but try a supersoft ball v Pro v , tp5. You will be like wow.. as they have soft covers but soft inner core aswell. If you don't hole out more I'd be amazed.. Mid handicap cheat for me .;-)
general thinking says soft cover over hard core gets more friction/grip than soft cover over soft core. Something to do with compressing core between face/grooves and core. But if it works for you don't change of course.
what ball do you recommend for high spin for irons, wedges AND driver, want to keep the spin on the wedges, but are struggeling to go over 1800 on the driver, with a high face strike hitting say 5 deg up it drops to 11-1400rpm, 105mph 4 deg up, 10deg driver, 15 deg launch 155 ball speed is about 1800rpm.
OK, is was under the impression that with the irons it spins more, but with the driver the increse in spin was negligible. Play a tp5x today and was thinking of the wilson staff to get the spin up..
An interesting video, though it did seem that the proximity didn't significantly improve even though the test is arguably biased towards the premium ball as you're using it second and have time to dial in the distance. Part of it to me seems to be an advantage of using a high loft v low loft wedge for chipping. You might get the odd super close shot with the high loft, but it's easier for it to end up short. I play a premium ball myself and sometimes get a shot that bites a lot and stops short. When playing with a rock you know it's not going to spin and can allow for it to roll out. Great food for thought!
Play what you can execute. I've tried for years to play those shots with the lower lofts and I'm just worse. I can shut down my 60 and hit the nippy zipper, or I can lazily flop one that just gently rolls. But I realize I'm the exception & have seen friends duff lob wedges multiple times a round. I say "play what you believe will work" because that's what you'll take a confident swing with.
That's a great observation. A few years back I tried each of the four B-Stones. One day I was comparing the RX and RXS on the pitching green. The RX would come out higher and roll out more effort t the RXS came out more traditionally with a little bite. Proximity was roughly the same, maybe even a little better with the RX because you could judge the roll out better. What I took away was that we can adapt to the ball and play the shot that it will allow us to. Sometimes the spinnier ball hard me in trouble as well because it'll check too much when I don't want it to. Most of that is me, though, not being comfortable yet being that aggressive.
I love you guys but that aerial camera is too far away. I would like to see a view that shows the ball landing and where it stops with the flag in shot.
Would love to see high and low spin ball at 120 mph to 100 mph driver then same balls for 95 mph 7 iron to 82mph . How much diff is there actually for high to mid to low swing speed
Not sure what your trying to prove here.. one ball comes in softer and runs out.. the other comes in lower, hops and skips to a stop...both balls end up the same distance...
