    I love the idea of the Empire of Nilfgaard serving as a subtle deconstruction of the typical 'Evil Empire' trope: an aggressive, authoritarian, expansionist nation that none the less serves as an attractive alternative to the superstitious chaos offered by its more autonomous (but less developed) neighbour states (particularily to the marginalized peoples living within those neighbors borders). It's quite a nuanced thing to have a state portrayed as neither wholly morally evil, nor entirely good, but as a complex geopolitical organism replete with its own internal contrasts, contradictions and ideaology. It adds a level of depth to the world of The Witcher that's very satisfying.

      I find Netflix take on Nilfgard a complete failure, meanwhile the games did it perfectly.
      The most thrown argument for this is their armor looks like ballsacks, but there is more to it from my perspective.
      The empire in the series looks straight evil and they are indeed quite evil from perspective of the north, the way they treat the countries they invade, they show no mercy etc, etc. however this completely dwarfs the fact that similar things are happening all around the continent, for example in the game you may easily fall for Nilfgard to be the most civilized faction on the continent because they actually are, although they are ruthless they are also very rich, powerful and intelligent and all of their actions are pragmatic and rational in comparison to the northern kingdoms who basically live by 100years old standards in comparison, I mean Radovid throws entire country into barbaric religion and burns mages and alike alive, others around are not better as they wage wars for racial discrimination, honor, or personal matters between monarchs...
      The way I see things, the Nilfgardian empire is the only stable organized faction on the continent.
      And the armor in the show truly is a mockery, how dare they to do it after the games raise our standards so high? it doesn't even look like they are not trying, instead it looks like they are trying to fuck things up on purpose.

The Witcher 3 is the first game I played, and when I nilfgaard outpost in the beginning I expected a regular evil empire character, but the man I met treated the people… good? Like when he asked for how much grain the people he conquered could give, he asked for a little less than what he said he could give so the people could eat. Obviously this is a hearts and minds tactics that makes conquest easier if the people don’t entirely hate you but it also gave me a cool insight into a people who are smart and 3 dimensional with complex characters.

    Honestly? I like them (aside from their incestuous emperor). Their only real evil is desiring conquest (which in the witcher world is basically a standard) but they're much, much more civilized than the north, and they are actually far more tolerant concerning mages and nonhumans, and their architecture and technology far surpasses the almost barbaric north.
    They're basically Rome, and I'd choose Rome over any kingdom of their time

    • @enexe6229

      as for civilization and technology they stole it from black seidhe. they execute mages for fun, use non humans as canon fodder and commit genocide against native cintrians. creators of witcher 3 wanted to put their idiotic deeds in the game but didnt have enough time for that.

    • @Godunow100
      @Godunow100 7 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      The thing is that they are VERY brutal in their conquests, even for the witcher world standards. For a polish reader (for whom the witcher books where written in a first place) their behavior during northern wars very much resemble war crimes commited by Germans and their allies during II world war occupation of Poland and other eastern european countries - which often was far worse then in western Europe. Aside from more effective military and bureaucracy they're not really technologicaly superrior to northern kingdoms. As civilization goes - yeah good luck ending as dogfood on the arena or working to death in the mines as slave. Bear in mind that the third witcher game whitewashed them greatly (while obviously villinising Radovid), something that even game creators admitted.

      I mean I still allied with them but PURELY to keep Roche alive. I actually did both choices but that look Roche gives you if you ally with Diljkstra honestly broke my heart.
      The fact is, Nilfgaard are badass. The Romans were badass. But buddy, if you think I'd enjoy living under the Romans, you are mistaken. The fact us, Nilfgaard are, at their core, goosestepping fascists who inflict misery and destruction wherever they go. Radovid might be a genocidal nutcase but that's not really a good standard to compare yourself against. Nilfgaard's war has brought unimaginable human suffering down on the people of Temeria, and I can't imagine life in such a severe empire would be ideal. Nilfgaard doesn't strike me as the empire which values equality, human dignity, and due process. To be fair, no one in the Continent does but Nilfgaard honestly strikes me as the worst of them all.
      The Romans were certainly an impressive civilization. And living there was probably better than living in Germania. But buddy, let me tell you something, that doesn't mean it was good.

      kwazooplayingguardsman what would you rather the certainty of Ciri being cared for and prospering as a sovereign of an enormous continent-spanning Empire, which would prosper under her enlightened rule or have her live an uncertain life of a Witcher, strolling through the North under a rule of a fledgling Empire ravaged by infighting after the death of Emhir or a self appointed madman Radovid who organizes pogroms on daily bases or the megalomaniac Djiskra who is a real cunt, so that sums up why and whats of Ciri becoming the Empress as the best decision for her and the continent.

    • @kwazooplayingguardsman5615
      @kwazooplayingguardsman5615 7 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      why do you think she would even be able to do anything? the reason why Emhry wanted to abdicate his position is because people were revolting against his family line and the animosity has also affected ciri. You do know that Ciri's scar came from a nilfgaardian revolutionary who wanted to kill her. The great families hates her for being non-nilfgaardian, the merchants of nilfgaard hates the family for forcing a war that they did not want to finance, the military officers hate her and the family for letting hundreds of officers be killed by demands of the northern kingdom. She would be gagged and be made worthless at court at best, she would be killed at worst. Which is why the books hinted that if Ciri ever joins the empire, she would marry Morvran because anyone related to Emrhy will be made useless, thus Morvan would rule in her stead.
      Then the accusation that the north is evil? Do you even know how it became that way? its often the assumption of those who never read the books or even played the past games that the north was always like that.
      FYI, before the nilfgaardian conflict, mages in the north were respected members of society, their like often seen in the courts of lords and kings. They weren't regularly trampled in the plazas like in nilfgaard, Also, the north has allowed the existence of a non-human state in their territories (mahakaman). its just that the elves don't want to live beside dwarfs and gnomes, while in the south, mutants and non-humans are part of the moratorium in nilfgaardian cities.
      That all changed through the manipulation of nilfgaard by funding scioa'tel activities, organizing the thanedd coup, and then framing already infamous mages for the crimes of regicide by revealing the existence of the lodge. (it doesn't help that the lodge was guilty in assisting two out of the three regicides, directly killed one, and attempted to kill another one through the use of a dragon). And btw, the Nilfgaardians are more effective in genociding the elves. Emrhy expressly forced francessca to exile all of the scio'atel and ordered them to continually harass the northern kingdoms. The elves are only fertile in a small period of their life and the scio'atel represents the largest number of elven young left in that world. Emrhy is basically remaking Aelirenn's attack which was the turning point of elven dominance as that attack led to the death of thousands of elven young, crippling the elder race.

      not to mention that nilfgaard is single-handely genociding the elves by bankrolling the scioa'tel then forcing them to stay in combat with the north (blood of elves, Emhry forces francessca to not recall the elven young "scioa'tel" back to dol blathanna)( this resembles allieren's attack on the young human kingdoms which devastated the elven race as the vast majority of the elven young were killed)

    Does Nilfgaard really have over 300.000 Soldiers? Before playing Witcher 3 i have heard 300.000 but Geralt also said there were like 30.000 in Witcher 3.

      Oliver Baclayon I believe Geralt said they hype their numbers up so they probably spread the rumor of 300,000 but actually have 30,000 at most.

      They have hundreds of thousands of soldiers, true, but not every soldier is sent to the frontlines. There's a need to garrison castles and fortifications, and to maintain order in the provinces.

      I'm the books we know from the mage spying on the head of nilfguaardian intelligence that nilfguaardian is committing 300,000 men to the spring offensive.
      Bare in mind that nilfguaardian still has plenty of soilders in the empire, and that this is after however many men died in the war in the previous year. And the fact that the first nilfguaardian nordling war was only a few years before hand.

    It quite shows how villified people can percieve the North and Nilfgaard,but at the same time they are both bad,but id say the North is worse if you think about it they are all about racism and mutualy asured destruction, all ready to go at eachoter's throats for petty things,after a war they would try to find a exucse to conquer one another wich in term might destroy the entire continent economy and technology,at the slight whim of someone gaining power they would choose to crush them out of fear.
    Yeah Nilfgaard also has a racism problem ,but its not as bad as what the North commited.
    But when we talk war its preety eazy to say that Nilfgaard realy do enjoy some warcrimes some twisted ones,with a equally wierd but effective emperor at its head.
    I think the Author did a great job portraying 2 kingdoms that are equally bad(morraly) and has people rile up to take the side for either one even tho everyone knows they are both bad.
    Realisticly doe id still choose nilfgaard, it seems that stability and prosperity is a thing they account for for any region,as messed up as it would be ( at the end of the day the victors write the history books dont they,and all the atrocities can be forgotten :) ...

      Army group centre and Army group east is also pretty obvious reference to eastern front during II ww.
      However the Great Sun is more likely reference to roman Sol Invictus. Nilfgaard is mostly mix of third reich and (late) roman empire.

    The Begining of second Nilfgaard war has many similarities with WW2. In games are many similarities with real nations, but nothing too deep for thinking. And one other thing:
    Read the books and then say again about tolerant Nilfgaard. Not even romans really forced occupied lands to give up their own way of life.
    Read the books and then say again about tolerant Nilfgaard :-D Only in witcher 3 Devs forced players to let Nilfgaard take to North. I sided with Dijkstra, he is really good book character and in last game is very funny. Roche´s story disapointed me in W3 and I cant neither to let him sold North beacause of Temeria or let Ciri to rule a nation who slaughtered Cintra, her home. And again say something about tolerant freedom fighters elves. If it was their way, people would be forced to sail from witcher world for good.

      I read the books and still prefer Nilfgaard, they at least bring order, do what they must to win and resemble the Romans.
      And about the romans. Yes they occasionally engaged in large scale genocide such as Carthage, Gaul and Britain and enslaved entire populations, and yes they forced you to work in a mine until you`re dead if you`re a slave.
      And yet we still see them as one of the greatest civilizations in history, how abot that ?
      And it`s not that the North is much better morally than the Empire. Redania for instance has a very stratified society

    • @gegensw4500
      @gegensw4500 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      that greatest civilization cannot even defeat redania without geralt in the game. as for freedom the north is beeter in that case.

    • @vitaeth4949
      @vitaeth4949 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I´m ok with that, you see them as unforgiving but justice bringing nation (if that make sense). I just want to give people that oposite side of view. Also world outside roman empire was unforgiving place full of tribes who enslaved their enemies too.
      In witcher there is medieval-tuned world full of kingdoms, just like Europe in 13th century. Also Europe kingdoms picked some good things from roman civilization.
      I see Djikstras choice as vice beacause he can unite the north and make some sort of prototype of republic or federation. What Nilfgaard made in books remind me more Mongols, Turks or Huns and even more Axis nations in ww2. more than Roman empire -
      romans needed to be unforgiving thowards their enemy. Others has ambitions and their ideals and nothing stop them to eradicate their enemies
      Bonus: If someone will be interested in future of witcher world in spite of choices of player there is timeline in Witcher Wiki which comes from book references. There is also guy who will be Nilfgaard ruler after Emhyr and big invasion of unspecified nation.

    • @gegensw4500
      @gegensw4500 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that nation comes from zerrikania as i remember and their last guy is jan calveit. according to gwent in the game universe he conducts deadly experiments on ill people.
