Arn Anderson was criminally under payed in every promotion that he worked in. Every employer he had in the wrestling business should be ashamed of themselves for not taking care of him financially. He was one of the most dependable guys and always did what he was asked to do. And HE DREW MONEY AND PUT REAR ENDS IN SEATS. Thank you Arn for all the years that you entertained us. He brought absolute legitimacy to professional wrestling in an old school way, and was the heart and soul of The Four Horsemen. No one has ever done it better than The Enforcer!! Thank you Arn, for all the years that you entertained us by sacrificing your body, mind, and soul in that ring. It was obvious that you gave one hundred and ten percent every time you stepped through those ropes or stood behind a microphone. It really was "our pleasure" to watch you work.

Arn Anderson was, without a doubt, the most believable tough guy in the wrestling business. “Credibility” is THE word when it comes to Arn.
I agree, he was a super hard worker and was a legit badass. The enforcer fit his personality in wrestling perfect. He was awesome in the four horseman.

@@jeff10455 It's because his interviews are what you call "long form." Meaning as much detail as possible, even tiny details down to how you feel, what you smelled when you walked in the building, DATES, etc. He wasn't being rude Arn has all the time he wants to continue where he left off when Conrad stops him to cover the smaller details before continuing as he did around the 10:40 mark.
Conrad just wants to set the tone. When Arn said "he got this real crazy look on his face" Conrad perked up to hear the rest just like us, even more so. The story was about to get good so he called a time out real quick to set the tone for the upcoming good part is all.

Arn and Tully did the right Vince has pulled this okey doke on so many wrestlers in the past.
I love when these guys actually say dollar amounts, rather than just saying something like "I did pretty well." or something like that.
Arn & Tully should have "never" been $50k behind on their earnings in 1989. The Brain Busters "got over" their babyface opponents like no other heel tag team was able to do, and 1989 was a prosperous year for the WWE. The Brain Busters performed with a level of "treachery" seen by few other heels in the history of the business. Back in the day, Vince McMahon had a problem with "honoring his agreements" to pay his wrestlers the full amount that he promised them -- which is extremely problematic, given how badly wrestlers can injured during a match. In early 1991, Vince had told the Ultimate Warrior he was going to pay him $500k, which Warrior expected to happen within a few months time. When Vince hadn't paid him by Summer Slam that year, Warrior "held him up" for the money. It's no wonder that so many wrestlers "jumped ship" and signed with WCW throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
The check never came or it was voided.....can't remember excatly but one thing I do remember is Warrior never got that money or the full amount. Yea Warrior played a hell of a hand but he still lost.

@@ericthomas917 The Brain Busters could only lose to the Bushwhackers at a house show. Sadly, Luke and Butch were a "jobbers-to-the-stars" tag team, for their entire stint in WWE. Adding insult to injury, at Royal Rumble '91, Luke got tossed out of the ring in 2 seconds flat.

On other talks on the podcast it does come down to money but not money alone in context. The schedule demands in WWF were a lot more than what he had in JCP and as a result he wasn’t seeing his kid. And initially I think it was a sacrifice they were willing to make because they believed that the sacrifice was going to result in more money for his family. When they broke it down and realized that they were actually making less money, and working a much more demanding schedule, it wasn’t worth the sacrifice of never seeing his family. Had he been making double the money he had been in JCP I’m sure for at least awhile he would’ve been able to see past the travel and justify it for the income. But when he wasn’t making the money he thought he was going to make mixed with the family aspect he didn’t want to be there anymore. So while it was because of money I’m not sure writing it off as simply money alone is entirely fair in the end. I think one also has to mix in how big of a deal sticking to your word was to Arn. He left JCP where he was happy because Crockett didn’t honor the payoff he’d said he’d make. Even though the payoff was the biggest he’d ever had and he was happy with what he made. The fact that he didn’t stick to his word was enough. I wonder what would’ve happened here had Vince not said they’d make more money with him but instead said they’d have the chance to.

You know for all that we loved in the old days I used to hate when wwf would do stuff like that on ppv titles should be defended imo why even book them if they weren’t going to defend their titles.
Because the match with the Harts was already signed when they beat Demolition for the belts, therefore they didn't have to defend them.

I doubt it's a coincidence that a ppv having a tag match as its main attraction doesn't feature a tag titles bout. 😉
@@jonathanturbide2232 Considering Hulk Hogan and "Macho Man" Randy Savage were PART of that tag team match, it wouldn't surprise me. Not to mention the other two tag matches on the card were six-man tags.
The tag team division always had more credible Wrestlers that era was awesome. Fond memories of Demolition, The Brain Busters, The Hart Foundation, I hated the Rockers and Bulldogs but they could wrestle, The Islanders, man such talent

Dynamite Kid said when he gave notice (‘88) it was because he was owed money as well. Seems like Vince played games with his employees money.

Vince didn't do much different than other promoters did back in the day.
Arn was only guaranteed 10 days at $150 a day = $1500. = WWE wrestlers made very little and then “might” get that big payoff for Wrestlemania and other Pay-Per-Views.
-No guaranteed big money contracts for most wrestlers.
Making it a full-time job was difficult. Many wrestlers were just part-time and/or went to Japan etc. e.g. George the Animal Steele.
@@jonmccormick8683 Dynamite and Davey actually quit the WWF and went to Japan. Vince flew to Japan with Bret Hart to try and change Dynamite’s mind. In Bret’s book he said when Vince signed the Bulldogs he jumped on his desk. Dynamite was paid $25 for the time they lost theTag Belts to The Harts. When he was laid up with his back, Vince sent Bret twice to get the belt from him. Dynamite told Bret that they would only lose the Belts to Him and Jim Neihardt

Arn was probably the most undervalued Wrestler in the history of this industry. Promo-wise. Work rate. Aesthetically. He had that "biker tough guy" look. You have to wonder: If he hadn't been hog-tied to Flair for two decades, I firmly believe Arn would have had a couple of title runs. He was too damn good not to.

So for better part of 3 years, when he was headlining all over the world, Flair was nowhere around him. Oh. One more thing. Who held the TV and NWA National titles (pretty sure those were SINGLE titles) ? Arn Anderson !! Ask 'Taker who he thinks is the "G.O.A.T."; see who HE says. (Hint : his initials are A.A.).

When I’ve heard this story I’ve always been on the fence about it. I’ve always understood the issue they’d had about being substantially behind the pace of pay they were earning in JCP after being told they’d earn more in WWF. I imagine even if they were trending behind in their pay they may have felt differently and wanted it handled differently if the difference between the numbers wasn’t so large. For example, if they were maybe $10K behind on the pace of the earnings compared to $50K they’d still probably say something about it or maybe even asked to be made square right away but their faith in him to fix it may have been drastically different if it wasn’t such a wide gap between the pay.
I’ve generally felt that expecting him to cut those checks wasn’t entirely reasonable to think would happen but I can get it. But I wonder if their approach would’ve been different if after that first meeting where they brought it up to Vince if their pay saw a jump for the next three weeks before they had the second meeting. If they made him aware and then maybe their checks go up 25% or more for the three weeks leading to that meeting I wonder if they’d have been committed to wanting the check right away or if they’d see that as a show or good faith that he was fixing it. Kinda how Arn mentions following the notice his checks doubled until he left. Have to wonder if their checks doubled after they first met with him if they’d have a show of faith to believe it was going to be right in the end.
But when you bring it up and the next three weeks the pay doesn’t change it’s hard to take his word to stick it out. Even if after the notice he bumped it up before he said he’d take their notice maybe they’d have faith to stay around. So while I still haven’t felt it was ever realistic to have expected him to cut those checks I recognize that it probably only got to that because he hadn’t done anything else to show them that sticking things out would pan out. In a way it almost seems like the check was almost a last gasp hope that he’d fix it since he hadn’t done anything else leading up to then to give them optimism that he would fix it over time. So I almost wonder if the gap of pay was lower, and he increased their pay to start covering the gap in the meantime, if they’d have stuck to needing the check right away or if they’d have seen that it was only slightly off pace and that he was making honest efforts to fix it before they were at a point to even ask for it right away.
But in the end it should have always said a lot about any guarantee he made verbally that if he meant any guarantees he wouldn’t have the contracts he did that guaranteed nothing at all. Hard to see that so many times Arn expected people to have the same character he did because clearly they never did.

I think Vince likes guys that are loyal to him. Disgruntled guys don't stay, but ultimately come back. Punk, Warrior, Hardy boyz, Jarrett, Bret...all came back. Triple H stayed loyal. Undertaker stayed loyal. Granted, Punk is not a WWE superstar, but he is back in the vicinity.

Just seen an interview on here regarding the Brain Busters pay. After a match they were in, they came back in the dressing room and Hulk Hogan made a comment about how is he going to follow that? Obviously he was regarding their great match, and Tully made a smart ass remark. After that the Brain Busters were no longer on the same cards with Hulk. Unfortunately for them, if you weren't on the same cards with Hulk you aren't going to make top money.

Briefly during 1989 Royal Rumble Hulk Hogan met up with Tully and Arn in the ring giving a brief glimpse of dream match up between Hogan and 2 of original Horsemen.
Funny you mention that. Windham was also in WWF in 89 for a few months. As was Dusty. And Flair was close to coming in. Could have been the 4 horsemen against Hogan, Dusty, Garvin, etc.

Why would Vince McMahon cut a 50,000 cheque to the BrainBusters? Arn and Tully were mid-card tag team wrestlers. The WWF had The Hart Foundation, Demolition, and The Rockers. Losing the BrainBusters wasn't going to hurt the company.

Arn and Tully were too normal for the WWF. They were class wrestlers but just didn't have the right...larger than life gimmick for WWF. They were NWA/WCW guys all the way.

I loved Arn, Tully, the brain busters, the horsemen, but it sounds to me like Arn & Tully were just a little too impatient. Vince didn't put them over the Hart Foundation for nothing...But at the same time Vince likes for guys to really prove themselves & their loyalty. Kind of a shame it didn't work out better, because I think they could have been much bigger than they were, and we could have seen so many amazing match ups...

According to a Jesse Ventura interview, Hulk Hogan made more money at Wrestlemania III than all of the participating wrestlers, guest celebrities, managers, referees, and set-up/tear down crews COMBINED. That's all you need to know about how poorly Vince McMahon paid and took care of his people. And for Arn Anderson to never pursue a World Title from Flair because he was loyal to the Four Horsemen says a lot about him. On a more humorous note, Arn's glasses will forever be iconic, and I hope one day he does beat Tosh's a** (from Tosh.0), lol.

It was a good and happy day when Arn returned to WCW. The idiot(s) at WCW should have paid Arn at least 3 times what they provided. WCW could have waited for an extra 30 - 90 days for Tully to receive treatment. WCW wasted funds on Movie Stars, Rock & Roll Stars that never drew a dime. These became a liability instead of an asset, meanwhile, the workers suffered unfair pay. it sounds like either a) vince just paid him double bc Tully wasnt there so might as well pay Arn as a tag team at the end cus thats the least he could do or B) he literally he was trying to make the point that he needed time and they were rushing him but he wanted them to just trust him but bc they werent willing to wait, he just wanted them to feel bad about leaving by paying them. or maybe he didnt want the rest of the locker room to follow.

Vince was insulted that he gave two NWA guys prime time opportunity and they were basically saying his platform and promise of “exposure” wasnt good enough. Paying Arn more was a mind fuck to show him that he can change the way the pendulum swings whenever he wants. I believe McMahon reached out to former WWWF employee,Jim Herd and let him know Tully was pretty much damaged goods and in which case Arn had o choice but to take what was given to him. Tully was also the more vocal and the son of a promotor so cancelling him would quiet down a lot of the noise about cash.
