Ghery buildings are becoming boring. Bilbao was spectatcular back then but since then he just repeats the same formula over and over. That museum looks like a giant pile of cardboard and packaging material.

Ghery's schtick has become tiresome. It keeps getting worse each time he tries to outdo himself. Yawn.

"The building references Islamic architecture." Then shows a Christian Byzantine building.

Which was later turned to a mosque and became highly influential for the islamic architecture in the region as it became the prototype for most mosques.

@@u.p.1038 Still a Christian Byzantine building style. There are plenty of beautiful mosques built later on after the building type was adapted that would be a better example of Islamic architecture to show. To be fair he did say “inspired by Middle East architecture” so that may be a very broad interpretation.

Looks like the first draft sketch of the Bilbao design that they pulled out of the trash and said “ hey, let’s sell this to the Saudis; they’ll never know the difference lol”

I like when museums look more serious and not like PeeWees playhouse.

Boy is it F-U-G-L-Y!! Gehry already got away with it with Bilbao and the Disney Hall. But this time, I think he got the Abu Dhabians as SUCKAS! That is one of the UGLIEST buildings in civilization!!

Once again, just because you have lots of money it doesn't mean that you can buy culture and taste.
I love all of the organisations involved in these projects. "An authoritarian regime with horrific records for human rights and freedom of speech? We couldn't possibly work with you on moral and ethical grounds. Oh how much money? Sign us up!"

This would be a perfect temporary location to show "L'Orgine du Monde" by Gustave Courbet... 🤣
Having museums where pretty much everything is forbidden is... "surprising".
So, I'm guessing that their concept of contemporary art is to be understood more as decorative arts...

When a country has that much available money, can't they build a unique monument that would be a true local architectural testament.

Outrageousness, excess, and stratospheric expense are the only cultural standards in Abu Dhabi.

Regardless of the architectural quality of the building, I would much rather the oil nations spend their riches on museums and cultural centres than on supporting terrorist groups. Let's hope that this endeavour will be successful.

“aesthetics” no guys there’s no aesthetic it’s literally an inside of a trash bin. Why on earth would we build such dumb building when we can build such amazing beautiful things. Gosh ancient people new the real aesthetic not this bs

Looks like another Frank Gehry monstrosity with no thought about what the purpose of the building is. I have seen the one in Bilbao.

@Kiyoone the Guggenheim in Bilbao is ridiculous, all show and no substance. Inside is a jumble of rooms that are hard to find and not suitable to show artworks. The Gehry buildings are fraught with problems. There is a Gehry building in Sydney constructed in brick, it has water problems. The buildings covered in titanium have problems with heat and birdshit. The spaces inside are not practical, what happened to form and function?

This is one of the ugliest buildings I have ever seen. It looks like a collapsed building with no cohesion whats so ever.
