$137B Mega Dam Controversy: China's Boldest Gamble Yet
$137B Mega Dam Controversy: China's Boldest Gamble Yet
What if we told you that China has plans to build a mega dam 3 times larger than the Three Gorges Dam?.
With China’s controversial history we looked into the concerns surrounding the $137 Billion project.
In this video we’ll reveal the massive size of the Yarlung Tsangpo Hydroelectric Project and the World’s concerns with civilian safety, environmental impact, and the control of natural resources.
China’s new mega dam, called the Yarlung Tsangpo Hydroelectric Project, is no ordinary dam. This engineering marvel is set to be the biggest in the world. When it’s done, it’s expected to produce an eye-popping 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every single year. That’s enough power to keep around 300 million homes lit up and running smoothly. That’s almost the entire population of the United States!
As for its size, the dam itself will stretch across the Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet, a river known for its steep drop and powerful flow. This natural force is what makes the location ideal for hydropower.
Now, brace yourself, because you won’t believe just how tall the dam’s walls are. They are projected to stand an incredible 600 feet tall. That’s about as tall as the Washington Monument or a 60-story skyscraper. I mean, the sheer scale is jaw-dropping!
But wait, there’s more. The project is expected to cost a staggering 137 billion dollars. That’s more money than some entire countries’ annual budgets. And if you’re wondering why China’s pouring so much cash into this, it’s all part of their larger plan. It ties into their 14th Five-Year Plan, which is all about boosting renewable energy and reducing pollution. Sounds like a great cause, right? Because who wouldn’t want cleaner energy and less pollution?
However, what’s on paper doesn’t always match what’s on the ground. Because with all its promises of clean energy, it’s also raising more than a few eyebrows. Let’s take a look at why this project is giving China’s neighbors, and even the rest of the world, some serious anxiety.

These renders are annoying. Instead of putting trees on top of every surface maybe focus on making sure these towers are close to rail and transit 😊
Ironically, the only project I think has an actual chance of being realized isn’t even mentioned in this video. It’s the United Center regeneration
Lot of Kansas State footage in this video…
And why is there a air-raid alarm in the background non stop?????
Wondering how they keep the mirror outside clean?! For a free stay in The Line i would like take the job tho 😅
For a stadium completely paid for by donors, one hopes that season tickets will be kept within reach in affordability.
You are using incorrect map of India, the Pok and Aksai Chin are belongs to India & are Integral part of India . Jai Hind 🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳 Bharat mata ki jay🇮🇳 Long live India 🇮🇳 Otherwise Nice video 👍🏼
But ur people say afghanistan is also part of India so we should include that also?

NYC schools are underfunded? HOW is that possible? NYC spends more per pupil than anywhere else in the USA!
Go Cats!!
Build it! The Grand Hyatt has already been altered from its original form, and it’s an eyesore in my opinion.
Its for small ships and Ferries, not Cruise Ships... frickin click bait BS.
They'll have a brand new state of the art stadium to lose in.
None of you understand! I live in Manhattan. This is about erasing landmarks from our skyline. The view of the Empire State Building has just been erased from Madison Square by a hideous new supertall being built right in front of it. If the Commodore tower is built, no one will ever again be able to see the Chrysler Building if they are standing in Midtown west of Park Avenue. This is a disaster!
Ill write you guys with my neurolink and let you know how it is
? 😂
They should use some of that money for more security
Brilliant. Thank you for your effort.
leave that hotel alone.
Build the Commodore. It looks iconic already.
I live on the northside of Chicago, just a short train ride away from NU. Literally nobody goes to their football games. Not even alumni or diehard fans of other CFB teams just looking for a fun live event to go to. Hopefully this changes that because it’d be fun having games a good college gameday experience available without having to make the 1.5 hour drive to Notre Dame or the 2.5 to UW.
It is too late; Midtown Manhattan is already darkened by monumental buildings and is the playground for the rich. At least this is a beautifully designed building, not just a functional box.
I remember that Trump kept the original Commodore ballroom inside his 1980 Hyatt hotel. The staley "old" interior was a stark contrast to the bland corporate modernism of the newly renovated hotel. Today, I wonder if this classic old NY ballroom still exists in this hotel? It would be great if the new developers could preserve it in the 3rd reiteration on that site..?
Basically won the UCP the election with this move. Albertans don't really want to do anything but more cocaine, and rack up their credit card debt and then blame it on the government. Its funny because the NDP supporters are just as superficial, however they just want their team to cater to their ever increasingly loss of grip on reality. This province and country sucks
The govt is going to waste the tax money regardless... might as well ensure you keep your NHL team bysecuring a new stadium. Otherwise the money will go to diversity programs for immigrants, etc.
Calgary has super bad hockey team. They should’ve had to bring home a cup before they get a new arena
they did win a cup
Yes, that was one year after the saddle was built for the Olympics. Sadly, I don’t see another Stanley Cup in Calgary near future.😢
It was built for the '88 Olympics it was ready in 1983. I don't know why that's important? They did win a cup, and a non called goal away in 2004. But if you aren't a fan, whatever.
I was actually at that game in 2004. I bought season tickets to be able to go to that game but really haven’t watched hockey since. I believe the strike forward right after that.
If you don't like it, move to a city with no NHL team. This is the cost of progress and staying relevant on the big stage. Once its complete the new palace will become a source of pride for city's next generations and the cost won't matter.
Honestly this a garbage take. You don't have a clue what most calgarians want or think. 🤡
The total cost to build Rogers Place in Edmonton was $613 million, which is $751 million in 2025 dollars. The arena itself cost $483.5 million.
Cool story this building has much more then rogers. Also rogers will look like a fossil when this arenas done. Also you're a goofy oiler fan of course you're gonna shit on it 🤡
@ bro 🤣 calm down all I did was state how much rogers cost never said anything bad. Get your panties out of a bunch geeeez guy want a hoot? 🤣🤦♂️
There are several factors that make Scotia Place more expensive. One being the cost of materials that have gone up significantly since the time Roger's was built. Another is that Scotia place requires a massive 40 foot deep hole, while Roger's Place was built with only the event level below ground.
We need the new arena badly. Thankfully it is finally being built. The way the city comes alive for a playoff run is truly one of the things that makes living in Calgary so great. With Trudeau gone and all the extra expense for the woke garbage including the mayor we can focus on helping the zombies find someplace to heal and contribute to society again. 🍀🍁
Absolutely disgraceful that the City of Calgary, including its useless and incompetent Mayor, are using $800 MILLION in taxpayer's money to subsidize a sports franchise with a market value of $1.65 Billion USD - this is a $440 million dollar increase over 2024 and the team's value as almost doubled in just the last two years. Calgary has a host of problems, specifically affordable housing, local health care, and public infrastructure. Absolutely disgusted by anyone who supports the use of public funds for this project.
Is this an AI created video?
We need public money to pay for park patrol in our parks, greenspaces and other common use areas. Make Calgary Safe and green again. In 2017 we had enough by-law officers to patrol on bikes and the areas were safe and clean. Clean from druggies, encampments, littler, dog poop, graffiti and violence in our parks.
So Glad I escaped the burden of Calgary
Lol over arena? Go live in the mountains you're not meant for city life. Boring ass goofy
provincially Calgary is the reason our province is disappearing up its own ass
The City of New York isnt paying for the construction of 175 Park Ave
I wish I could water my trees in summer but Calgary has no money for infrastructure like functional water pipes. I guess I could buy bottled water at the area and bring it home for my poor garden.😢
Literally first world problems. Some places don't even have drinkable tap water... IN CANADA
Wow haven’t heard about a SINGLE protest and a majority of people that I’ve talked to are completely for it. NDP hot piece is all this is
the Alberta NDP personally control the media, Notley should be in jail!
Sorry the flames are a huge source of revenue to the city, with visiting teams, concerts, conventions etc. This is soundings like a whiney hit piece by the loser provincial NDP party. The economic boost of the new arena will be enormous
This is 100% by some fiscal conservative, who's confused why we aren't forming mass protests over every decision he doesn't particularly like in city hall. Not sure how you would paint this guy out to be some liberal who would be in favor of spending for the benefit of Calgarians.
As someone who doesn’t give one crap about hockey or the Calgary Stampede, it’s an absolute waste of money and not a project I want MY taxes to go towards! Calgary has tried to revitalize downtown Calgary for 45 years and failed miserably. It’s ugly, boring and a complete dud. I live in Calgary and go downtown maybe once every 2 years, and only because I have to.
lighten up. the new arena is city owned and will generate 150 million a year in revenue that goes directly to the city. sound better now?
Citizens of Calgary would have preferred more transit options, lrt, buses etc
Maybe could have used money from the BMO Centre. Funny how there is no bitching about all that money spent.
Speak for yourself.
IF there are cost overruns 🤣
Every major project it seems has cost overuns. Take for example the extension of the Montreal Metro extension of the Blue line to Anjou. An extension of 5 new stations from St. Micheal to Anjou which had been promised since 1988 and 37 years later construction hasn't even started and the cost of it is already over $6 billion.
So where and from who is this opinion piece written ,come forth and be clear as to what interest this is written .seems to be leftist mierda .
And the stampedes play at spy hill land fill field...... whats wrong here.
Edmonton arena cost just about the same. Edmonton owned only put up 400 million rest is tax payer
Terrible video. No depth, no data, no direction.
I'm from Calgary and I'm not sure this project is generating anger or is as controversial as the video suggests. The Flames are paying more that just $40 million. They are also paying $17 million in annual lease payments, escalating 1% per year for a present-day value of $356 million, $1.5 million per year for community sports funding (total $52.5 million) plus the potential sale of properties in the Rivers District to the Flames for development, which will not only yield sales revenue, but increase the annual property tax base. As for petitions against the arena, the only one I'm aware of is calling for a diversion of arena funds to the new C-Train Green Line. Even then they only have just over 1000 signatures, which is a drop in the bucket for a city of 1.4 million people.
incredible to see someone think this is a good deal and that the flames are paying their fair share. peasant mentality like yours keeps the billionaires fat and rich.
yes thank you
Agreed, I’m from Calgary and this commentary is click bait, the drama and narrative is ridiculous. Also, he has the cost sharing numbers completely wrong. This new world where anyone can just say whatever they want with no accountability is very sad indeed.
NHL is a hideous sports league that wraps its around the Canadian national anthem and then sends player salaries to Russia.
