Another great thing about the AR is you can have a huge Punisher skull engraved on the side. Surely a jury would agree that the only thing you're guilty of is being a badass if you have a punisher skull on your AR.
A competent person could defend themselves in court vs that dumbass argument. How did the punisher skull make the dead intruder break into the victims home and threaten their life against his will ? I live out in the middle of nowhere in South Texas. You better believe I love and have an AR-15 ready to go ALL the time. I used the M-16A1, A2, M4 guns during my Army career. I know the platform. In my hands, it is instinctual to operate the controls and engage targets. Yes, I keep a 590A1 ready as well. My wife likes that one also and she is a very accomplished shotgunner. I look at the AR as my outside the house, stuff going on outside at night gun. We get illegals that run through the ranch quite often. Body armor and vest stay ready. It is a different environment. Whatever you use, get trained, train often, stay vigilant, and don't forget fitness. I'm 65 now and I still do PT. It is just harder now. Keep the old man out.
But thats the thing. Your geographical location allows for an ar15. I live in a suburb and there's houses 360 degrees around me. Whats best for me is a 9mm carbine with two 30rd or 45rd mags. If I lived in Texas out in the open, i'd have an ar all day.
@@Immigrantlovesamerica The concept of the AR, not the cartridge. Sure, a 9mm carbine would work well. My sister lives in the city. She has a tricked out Ruger 10/22 with a red dot and lots of mags. That would work. I have hunted all my life and I am 65. Even the 22LR can be lethal. In the Army we always had the motto reapply as needed. Put enough holes in the perp and they are done. Even with a 22. You are well armed. You took the steps needed. We still have some folks out there dragging their feet, not preparing, training, having a plan. @@ellwoodwolf Idk about you but I'm usually in control of how many rounds I shoot, on account of the fact that only one gets fired every time I pull the trigger.
I think a 9mm AR or other PCC/braced pistol/SBR is the sweet spot. You might get a little more barrier penetration than 55 grain .223 but the sound will be less than a typical self defense pistol due to the longer barrel. If you get tax stamps you can make it ear safe and add a stock to make it more controllable/accurate to reduce stray bullet issues/missing. With a .223 AR, going short is difficult because the short gas systems operate at much higher gas pressure which makes the action less reliable. Ideally you could use something with a roller delayed blowback mechanism like an HK MP5 to do all that with less reciprocating weight to be easily controllable for follow up shots but a 9mm AR with simple blowback is already pretty controllable.
Or get a PCC with a silencer. Ear safe and as effective to some goon as a rifle. Can't shoot them deader than dead. You people act like there's a rogue Seal Team about to kick down your doors every night. Home invaders are unprepared and desperate. A combination that makes them easy targets to anyone that knows how to take a gun off safe and pull the trigger.
No discharging a AR under a roof at the range and forgetting to put your ear plugs in will teach you this. And electric muffs allow you to hear everything going on in the house. I have both a 14” 12 gauge by my bed and my 11.5 AR.
I was in thick woods and got excited and forgot to put my earpro on like a dumbass. One shot later and I'm half deaf and hear ringing. I don't wanna know what it'd be like inside a room.
Ya, I have this but I haven't figured out how to get my ear pro on, my wife's ear pro on and my Golden Retriever's ear pro on and still engage the intruder in a timely manner. lol
Another excellent and informative video. I remember point shooting my M16 at close range targets in BCT. Sights were taped over and we were trained to just look over sights, focus on target and simply point and shoot. Amazing how well that works. Fast forward to present and all my EBR’s wear optics.
It's frustrating to think someone could be seen as wrong for defending themselves simply because they used an AR-15 as opposed to a handgun. Unless the weapon used was designed to cause insane suffering, like some kind of acid launcher, then I'm not sure why it matters what injured or killed an intruder.
You can be frustrated all ya want, but it's most likely NEVER gonna be a situation you have to deal with, so WHY EVEN WORRY ABOUT IT??? I'm sick of the cowards in this country sweatin stuff just because some news outfit is brainwashing folks to think that way....I stopped watching "the news" and am FAR better off because of it!!!..IF you do have that situation, grab a pistol, a couple quick pops, and 9.9 times out of 10 any person is runnin, so unless you WANT to kill somebody, odds are, you'll never be in that situation... Or you live in or near the ghetto, and then, sell your damned weapons and move......Those scum screamin they need guns because of ghetto gangbangers are there because they want to be....
It is because of the media-approved message that an AR-15 is a weapon of war, designed only to kill human beings, therefore use of one is inherently offensive and excessive. The fact that an AR is much easier to shoot accurately and less likely to require a random spray of bullets to end an attack compared to a handgun is irrelevant.
Because AR equal bad, everything else equals good. A 556 will blow the lungs out of someone, but a hunting rifle chambered to 3006 isn’t meant to kill. This is the insane logic that the courts have.
Getting an AR is way more complicated than a pistol for sure. I put mine together. I didn't realize the amount of slight variations in parts until I was already into it. Luckily I bought a full kit to build. 1:7, 1:9, 20", 16", rifle length, pistol length, red dot, variable. It could be overwhelming.
Not disputing that 2009 study but I’d be curious what the outcome would be if they did it again in 2023. AR’s weren’t nearly as common back then as now. I wouldn’t underestimate Connie running an AR. My 70 year old mom loves shooting my AR’s because of the low recoil. Muzzle blast was a bit of a turnoff until I put a can on it.
Interesting point. Have optics for the ar15 gotten worse or better? We need an update to the data I agree. (Also Pen-15 data if used for home defense. A Connie and Clint training video would break the (guntube) internet for sure.
I think people getting most of their education on guns and bullet wounds from Hollywood special effects houses has contributed to a serious lack of understanding and a disconnect from reality. My mom has her dad's service revolver from when he was an LAPD officer, a S&W Model 19. I'm guessing a jury isn't going to jam up a woman in her 60s with Grandpa's old 6-gun but if she ever has to use it, those .357 Magnum JHPs are going to make a hellacious mess of someone's chest cavity. Maybe not as bad as a 5.56 but it's not something I'd want to be stuck with
I normally consider PCCs pretty pointless, since you've got the size of a rifle while still only putting out a handgun round. But for home defense, with a suppressor, it means you've got the benefits of control you get with a rifle, and get something that's at least close to hearing safe because of the can. Yes you lose out on terminal ballistics, but I think the advantage in situational awareness is worth it
It's a wash. ballistics seldom matter, but pcc's are a bit nerfed by law if 16" is required. A 223 is not much more at that point, and more effective and better range. For an SBR sure, but most people don't care to mess with that.
@@nobodynoone2500 Which is why the brace ruling is a big deal. Something like a braced PC Charger for example can be absolutely ideal for home defense as long as the brace won't put the user up for scrutiny. With a setup like that, you can run interchangeable Glock mags with your handgun (even better benefit, only stocking one type of ammo,) you can shoulder for accuracy and stability, you have enough space to run any dot optic, you still have space for a full-size light, you won't have a debilitating amount of muzzle flash and noise, but the entire getup is still short enough in length for maneuverability, it would stick out less from your body than a pistol in your fully-extended arms. I agree the ballistics argument doesn't matter, not at typical home defense/self defense ranges (7-15m.) The ballistics between 9mm and 556 would be a consideration if you were shooting out to 100m or further with a full length rifle barrel, but if you're doing that and trying to justify it as self-defense, then...well, do not pass go, and do not collect $200. The difference between say, .300blk and 9mm with a short barrel at the length of a hallway is negligible at best.
@tommynobaka That's why I ended up getting a Flux Raider. My 320 was doing nothing but collecting dust since I got the 365. The Raider gave it new life so I didn't need to bother buying a PCC

Good info in this video. The best home defense is having a good offense. Making sure windows and doors are secure. Having said that , I would only consider an AR 15 with a silencer as a last resort for home defense. I'm not as agile as I use to be and maneuvering a rifle inside a dwelling can be tricky.
If you have a single family home, this makes sense. IF you live in a townhouse or Condo, this could lead to unintended injuries. I use either a 6MM or 45, both 1911. Th ammo I use is +P hollow-point. This allows the round to mushroom to expend its energy in the attacker.
After watching what Liberty safes did, (gave Mastercode combination to ATF, without a subpoena), your better off creating stash spots Thomas Jane the punisher style. Hinged and spring loaded pop outs.
I had ONE accidental discharge in my lifetime. It was from a .32 Barretta Tomcat (I didn't realize you had to eject the chambered round through the breech). Anyway... that little .32 bullet went through my bedroom wall and passed all the way through the exterior wall and lodged itself in a fence panel 30 feet from the house. Learned a lot that day.
Could've not agree more. I own a few guns but when I really started thinking about which gun to use incase of an emergency. My thoughts have always come back to my AR. Obviously that is speaking if we are able to get to it at the time. If not use whatever you have nearest to you ie handgun. But the AR should be the gun to try and get to. Hide a few ready to go around your house. Make sure all your family members know how to use every gun you have. Make sure you know how to clear your own house. Have a backup plan that the family understand. Then finally pray that you will never have to execute your plans.
Glad I switch to FOXTROT MIKE 15. Without a std buffer tube. One model FM Rifle has a extremely tough 5 position collapsible stock that folds. But is strong enough to bust a door down. @@Belianify I dont know anything about pws at least recently. You can put a surpressor on a 12" or shorter barrel I think it'll be a little bit more violent and cuncussive but fine as long as the surpressor doesn't have barrel length restrictions reported by the manufacturer
Hi James, good points, but I live in a crappy state with 10 round mag limits and not allowed to own a suppressor. At 10 rounds, it's only 3 or so more than a shotgun and the same as a pistol mag. How about a PCC? Less noise, more shootable than a pistol, etc. I've shot a short barrel AR at the indoor range, and Clint is spot on. Loud even with ear plugs and cans on!
Pcc seem cool, but just kinda suck worse than pistols or rifles in use. Even a .32 is plenty if you can put shots on target and wont deafen you to your surroundings.
I love you James, thank you so much for making this series! I honestly felt like my world was going to collapse when I saw your whole court decision breakdown video. Here’s the hope!
Regarding shotguns we must remember that one (buckshot) shotgun round equals nine pistol rounds so round per round comparison does not work. Shotgun is not a fast magdump gun. 8-shot capacity in a shotgun equals 72 pistol rounds.
Very well explained James educating people who have no idea is very important these days and even opening up the minds of people who do not understand ballistics is as well important thanks for the videos
This is one of the best takes about the subject. With many of videos on the same subject (AR - 15 for home defense), they seem to be more about the spread the religion of AR -15 ownership than going over the pros an cons. The only thing that would made have been video is consideration of the shorter carbines and carbine pistols (the video does compare with handguns and shotguns). Thank you.
A really well-reasoned video, thanks for making it. As someone who carried the M-16 and M-4 for over a decade and used it to clear houses in Iraq, I respectfully would recommend using a shotgun or pistol for home defense. As you stated: the AR requires an exceptional amount of training and also a ton of care and maintenance. Shotgun require minimal training and are exceptionally reliable. The capacity question is moot to me because all the evidence I have ever seen says, unless you are a criminal or living in a banana republic, once you start shooting the criminals will disengage. Defending from a strong-point, you don't need to and should not be dumping mags.
Hey James, I am an engineer, and while firearms aren’t my professional area of specialty, the basic physics are really pretty simple. So we have 2 basic factors to look at when it comes to bullet penetration. #1 is the amount of energy the projectile has. Energy is mass times velocity squared. So you can have a really heavy bullet moving slowly with the same energy as a really light bullet moving fast. Something to think about with this equation is the velocity gets squared, but the mass doesn’t. This means if you double the mass of the bullet and keep the velocity constant, the energy gets doubled. However, if you double the speed of the bullet and keep the mass constant, the energy increases by 4 times instead of 2. #2 is impact surface area. So let’s say hypothetically we have a .45 long colt flat nose and a 5.56 fmj and we’ve hand loaded them to where they have the same energy output and then we fire these rounds at a steel plate. Assuming the rounds hit the plate straight on, the .45 colt will have maybe .125 square inches of contact area on the initial contact. The 5.56 will have maybe .008 square inches of contact area on the initial contact. So when the round hits the steel plate, the steel plate has 15 times the surface area to resist against the same energy, so the 5.56 is far more likely to penetrate. The 5.56 is relatively lightweight, but gets a lot of energy from moving at a relatively high speed and has a relatively small contact area, so it is very good at breaking through armor. There are other factors at play here and this has been oversimplified, but hopefully this gets you an idea of the basic physics behind projectiles.
My home defense weapon will always be the one "brought into my home" by the assailant that we struggled over until he was accidentally shot as I tried to stop him from shooting one of us. Then, I performed unsuccessful life saving measures to try and stop the air escaping the orifice (on his face). I was so traumatized that all I could tell 911 was that I'd been attacked before I blacked out so I'm going to need counseling for my PTSD and probably should sue his estate for mental anguish. Firstly, we should look deeper into these figures and verify the effective causal link between conviction and weapon used, rather than a specific context which would incidentally lead to the presence of certain weapons (correlation). Secondly, it is necessary to actually check the over-penetration. I'm really surprised by the results on the 5.56. I thought it was dangerous ammunition, but it is less dangerous than it seems. I guess it depends a lot on the type of ammunition used. Otherwise obviously the AR15 platform has all the advantages. That's why it was developed. And even if there are perhaps (probably) better candidates, it is a very well established solution on the market. Therefore accessible for purchase and maintenance. (French ex law student here. And damn imperial system :D ) BTW even if there are already channels that speak about 2A, self defense and (especially guns), I think your content is pretty interesting. So, yes. You just made a new subscriber :)
Having fired an AR in an indoor range, I can say that I would not use one for home defense. .223/5.56 throws too much concussion back at me indoors; and that's not even getting into how loud it would be without hearing protection. Also, I found the AR I used (it was a Ruger) difficult to comfortably shoulder without chicken wing-ing; although I'm sure that could be mitigated with practice. If I'm going to use a long gun for home defense, I'd prefer using my shotgun (w/#4 Buck) or lever-action carbine.
Good point about the concussion. A PCC like a 9mm carbine generates much less concussion and will do less hearing damage. Keeping some ear muffs next to whatever defensive weapon one has staged is also a good idea.
Sit in a Chair, listen for the foot steps, blast the ghost in the doorway. Nothing is scarier than a shotgun indoors. They RIP the house apart. Shotguns take "Chunks" outta people. Guns from yesteryear, still kill the same way. Again, sit in a chair, lights off, calm yourself, listen, can you hear where the intruder is in the house? You know every inch of your house in the dark, intruder does not, use that to your advantage, you know the layout of your home, he doesn't. Wait for intruder in your Funneled-fire-location. Stairwell, any doorway, hallway. It's not only the size of the shotguns payload but it's applied intimidation to the enemy, loud noises scare all mammals that can hear. On God, no one returns fire on an indoor shotgun, snipers don't shoot at Tanks, they don't want that big barrel to point at them.
An AR would be overpenetrating in most American homes (dry wall)... I think a shotgun would be great for that, or a PCC. The latter can be handled and shot relatively accurately by women and children too, so they're quite Handy in that regard.

Very interesting info James. A couple of years ago I transitioned from an AR-15 setup for home defense to a PCC with the thought that a 9mm 147 gr hollow point would not over-penetrate things like drywall. I guess that logic was incorrect. Although I do like my CZ Scorpion setup that I have. Light and a can on the end. Easy to handle and quiet.
Bruce Jenner transitioned to a woman with a penis, to escape the crime of hit n run, he killed a woman in the crosswalk, same way the female state trooper did in my home town. Ran over a guy in the crosswalk. She claimed she was distracted by construction on gardeu road. When female state trooper ran over the man in crosswalk.
Another con not brought up is how do you secure an AR-15 for safety (children, etc...) while having it readily available for spur of the moment? Not that a pistol safe isn't going to hinder me, especially in a fight or die scenario, but something to consider. If you have no kids or grandkids, well great, keep it hot and staged somewhere handy, good on ya. And regarding the noise, just taking a pistol to an indoor range, WITH ear pro of course, that first shot always gets me. It's the "startle factor." Having never fired in defense, I'm not sure how I'd react to that first round going off in my house with an AR-15. Adrenalin may negate that, but maybe not. For the same reason I choose not to make a shotgun my primary defensive weapon. The fact is, these are all hypotheticals, because NO ONE knows how they're going to react in a stressful life-threatening situation, no matter what. You can overthink it or keep it simple. I'll go with my pistol and take my chances. I've lived a full life.
Part of reason for light recoil in the AR is combination of features light bullets and powder. A pneumatic gas system. In line barrel, bolt buffer, buffer spring and stock. All of these created a rifle with a smooth and light recoil.
They don't automatically go. It's just in some states it's up to the district attorney ( who usually has an agenda) who wants to prosecute on the basis that lethal force wasn't necessary. Which is why many people live in Castle Doctrine states or Stand Your Ground states where if you feel you're in immediate danger of grievous harm or death you have no obligation to try and get away and you are free to use deadly force.
I like asking you this question because you appear to be more open-minded about new theories than some of your peers. When you trained in the military, did you ONLY practice a scenario of clearing a room with an AR style weapon? Did they have you use an AR style weapon then try with a shotgun, then try with a handgun, and then try with two handguns? The reason I ask is that humans are WAY bigger than baseballs and it is simply too hard to be so far off target in a small space for there to be an advantage to an AR's accuracy. I've shot moving targets and stationary targets with a handgun up to 25 feet and had no problem grouping the size of a grapefruit. Houses have lots of blind corners and turns, I just don't see how two handguns wouldn't be superior to an AR. More importantly, what separates humans from animals is muscle density. As such, arteries in humans flex more than animals because there is a lot less muscle density. That's why a .45 hollow point is better against humans than a 9mm hollow point. The higher velocity and penetration is not necessary with humans but the extra width of tearing is likely to sever arteries. I prefer 10mm the most because I can comfortably control that weapon and re-acquire quickly enough to shoot multiple rounds meaningfully. Obviously, if you could only choose one weapon and the threats were approaching your house, the AR would be better fending them off before they get inside but once inside, it seems the handgun has the advantage especially two of them.
Long guns have an excellent place in home defense, no question there. The one thing that has stuck with me was words of Massad Ayoob when he's talking about using a pistol as to free up the secondary hand to be on the phone with law enforcement.
My neighbors would disagree that an Ar15 would be the best for home defense. They live almost a mile away, and 5.56 rounds could STILL exit my house, and kill some poor schmuck in their sleep.
James, thank you for including that segment at 12:12 from Mr. Clint Smithwood lol. Those are the golden moments of hilarity that would otherwise be lost in all of the footage that needs to be edited and removed. I'm still laughing lol. Total hilarious badass. I'd love to see a modern study in 2023 and how the results have changed. I only knew like 2-3 people that owned AR's in the mid-late 00's. Now I can only think of one person that I shoot/hunt with that doesn't own at least one. AR's were really a DEEP 2A community thing until 2020... After the rush to buy any gun possible by those that didn't own a gun, that's when I started noticing normies owning them, and if they did prior they kept it a secret due to the stigma. The 2020 riots changed everything: how the public views criminality, how little they trust LE to keep them safe, how they view guns, etc. My guess is there might be a little difference in sane jurisdictions, but not a "holy crap, I need a Mini" levels of difference. Blue states and cities will railroad you for sure, but they're railroading anyone that protects themselves from criminals, regardless of the tool used for defense. Had the Rittenhouse case occurred in the late 00's, I think he'd be in prison. The overwhelming amount of video from smart phones is what saved him, a luxury (and curse) that was far less ubiquitous in '08-'09.
You nailed it with the complicated aspect of the damn thing. I bought my first and only AR-15, a Windham Weaponry MPC-RF, back in 2021, and I've shot it literally once. I think I put 30 rounds through it. Haven't taken it back out of the case since. Truthfully, I've knocked it over more times than I've shot it. I absolutely dread the thought of having to upgrade it, which it definitely needs. If I got back into private security work, I'm going to need it for my job (depending on the assignment), so it will have to get upgraded. Perhaps I would have been happier with another AK? My WBP Jack is awesome. But for home-defense, my Glock 45 gets the nod.
You can go to prison for defending yourself with any firearm. Even if you're cleared criminally, there's a decent chance you'll get sued civilly by the family of the assailant. It should not matter what tool you use to defend yourself it was legally owned and responsibly used. That being said, there are alot of factors that could sway a jury against you (in civil or criminal court). Also, James, I'd enjoy seeing your take on just that: Other than the firearm used, what could potentially sway a jury against you in a self defense case. Factors that *could* (even if they shouldn't) sway a jury against you.
@@jeffpraterJSF No one dictates how I defend my life and that of my loved ones. I'll use whatever weapon and whatever force it takes to end the threat. Period. Just like cops are legally allowed to. Putting a laser bore in my ar and walking around all the angles of my house to check the offset to my sight made me feel very confident in home defense use. 🤘
So is it the best or is it the worst choice? James: That's a definite maybe. Still a great video with Clint as the cherry on top for explaining what it's like to fire an AR15 in your hallway. That guy is a national treasure, no doubt about it.
The type of gun used in home defense cases should not be permissible in court as long it was legally owned. This would be no different if what options were on a vehicle were brought up in a drunk driving case. "They had leather seats, therefore they are more likely to be selfish.".

Having a pair of electronic ear pro next to your defensive set up is a must.
Negligent discharge Teaches people that lesson.

Even with earmuffs 14.5 with A2 is loud enough the muffs barely do the job.
I think people getting most of their education on guns and bullet wounds from Hollywood special effects houses has contributed to a serious lack of understanding and a disconnect from reality.
My mom has her dad's service revolver from when he was an LAPD officer, a S&W Model 19. Maybe not as bad as a 5.56 but it's not something I'd want to be stuck with
I just completely love how this guy explained everything crystal clear and to the main point perfect.
Best argument I've seen yet.
I mean that's why there's so much interest in handgun chassis
@tommynobaka That's why I ended up getting a Flux Raider. My 320 was doing nothing but collecting dust since I got the 365. The Raider gave it new life so I didn't need to bother buying a PCC

I would like to take this opportunity to ask what is going on with PWS? There is a rumor in Europe that they have some political problems and maybe they won't make rifles anymore? next question. Can a silencer be fitted to a 12' barrel or is it better to use a 14.5' barrel?
First day watching your channel James. Well done.
You can magdump a semi-auto shotty every bit as quickly as you can a pistol.
@@stevem4783 I know you can, but it's a waste of ammo.
Thank you.
you hit me hard with firefly and the expanse being cancelled
10/10 running my ar for home defense if i have access to it.

"Judge, I can't sleep or eat and it's really effecting my work and private life. I'm afraid I'll never get over Macho Grande".

PABLO CRUISE!!! WOO-HOO! What a great band----and very smooth! I can teach a new shooter to be smooth, fast, and accurate with an AR15 in less time than with a handgun----and with less anxiety. Not really for CCW, but for home defense/farm defense it is a great platform! Thank you for this video!!

Your mom happens for me all the time.
And damn imperial system :D )
BTW even if there are already channels that speak about 2A, self defense and (especially guns), I think your content is pretty interesting.
Keeping some ear muffs next to whatever defensive weapon one has staged is also a good idea.
.AR 300BO SBR with suppressor. Is in my future. Right now it's a no longer braced pistol.😑 until I move

A couple of years ago I transitioned from an AR-15 setup for home defense to a PCC with the thought that a 9mm 147 gr hollow point would not over-penetrate things like drywall.

12:10-12:28 my jaw hurts from laughing.. 😂
Part of reason for light recoil in the AR is combination of features light bullets and powder. A pneumatic gas system. In line barrel, bolt buffer, buffer spring and stock. All of these created a rifle with a smooth and light recoil.
I still dont get (also here in belgium) why people go to jail after defending their home

Love AR's, have a few. But my primary home defense gun is an 870 with #6 bird shot. Paul Harrell has a really good video about this subject.
No way 🤦♂️ AR is better period
Well rounded thinking. Many aspects to which gun & for whom. Thank you.
Great, clear explanations. You seem like a fantastic attorney.
I prefer a pistol in the house.

You know how it's supposed to go: Hold my beer and watch this.

Good topic question. In fact I have a cool Gen. 1 Steyr AUG, if needed, for "home defense". But I'd druther use my PS90 for its even shorter profile.
Take Connie to Thunder Ranch you coward
I so enjoy your style, James.
