  • How good is PASM? When looking to buy, is it worth waiting for the right car with it fitted? How does it change the Porsche Cayman 987?
In this video I share my thoughts on how the two different PASM modes affect my car.

I do like your videos and analysis, especially when I see graphs and DATA. I have the same car with a lot of track preparation mods, such as suspension, air intake, exhaust, ecu remap and lsd. I still haven't had the pleasure of using it on track, as I purchased it last May. I keep the look of my car pure and standard.
I totally agree with the usage of PASM for the road in reference to the suspension. But, the crispness and immediacy of the throttle response when on, is huge fun! The car feels alive and ready to jump to the demands of the right foot. I tend to switch PASM on as soon as I'm out of build-up areas, choosing to switch the dampers off, thus having the best of both worlds, sporty crisp throttle and fairly comfy ride.
Can't wait to take it out on the track!

I'm really glad to have PASM on my 987.1S Boxster. The normal setting makes the car more comfortable when driving in town, on A roads and sedate B-roads. And then you press the button and the character changes and it becomes much sharper and the road and chassis feedback goes through the roof.
The Sport setting is really uncomfortable when you're driving "normally" - for the first year of ownership I would describe it as the "button that makes the ride really bad". It comes into its own when you drive the car more aggressively, i.e. can put your foot down on a twisty road. At higher speeds the ride quality smooths out again and the "stiffer" damping does its job brilliantly.
Basically, I would say that PASM Sport mode is designed for when you're really _driving_ the car - it's not for when you're just wafting around. On the other hand the Normal mode makes the car significantly better for non-sporty occasions. PASM gives you get better experiences at both ends of the spectrum :)

My comment on this is that I had a 997.1 C2S with PASM at 88,000 miles with the original (2005) dampers. Sport mode on the PASM was basically unusable on the road, just way too stiff. I decided to refresh the suspension and after a lot of deliberation I eventually went for new Bilstein B4 dampers all round and original S springs.
Wow. The standard setting was super comfortable and controlled, BUT, the Sport mode was suddenly totally usable on roads most of the time (apart from REALLY rough roads) whilst being super sporty and responsive.
It's truly unbelievable and a total transformation. I wouldn't want anything different because it is now perfectly judged in both standard and sport modes which gives the car an incredible breadth of ability.
Bilstein don't sell different dampers for the 997.1 and 997.2 so I suspect they have come up with better PASM settings over the years that take the best settings of both generations. Porsche did tweak the suspension a bit for the 997.2 so I guess the damper settings were improved.

  • @jondobbs

as a 987.2 2.9 manual owner, I'm really interested in your analysis - I probably paid a couple of grand premium over a 987.1 S (maybe even three), to get the smaller engine car + I've "invested" £2k in tyres, main service, discs and pads + my gear selector broke @ £700!!!! and 60k on the clock, but it's buttery smooth now so money well spent.
I think the things I'm missing are a sports exhaust and maybe the sports seats - I like the trade off in ride comfort on standard springs, and the car is fast enough for me. Key for me was a sport steering wheel, which I have + the 19 inch Carrera S II alloy wheels.
My last Porsche was a 987.1 2.7 Boxster with a five speed, and I highly rate the 6 gears, makes a big difference that I was not expecting and even thought it was an option until I bought the car and found out it was standard on the 987.2
If you want to do a price comparison with my car, pls let us know as I love a spreadsheet !!!

Have spoken about this a few times. Blitzing around Surrey, I turn sport mode on then soften up the PASM. This allows me to have the sharper and more immediate throttle response, more slack in the traction control and the better ride. The 987's standard setup is very well supported with little loading in the corners. I often drive with my friend in his CLA45 and another in his M2 and the cayman is by far the most planted in the twisties.

    • @knn3th

How do you "soften up the PASM"? It only has Normal (Soft) and Active/Sport mode, and when you start the car up it's always in Normal (soft) mode, even when pushing the Sports button, PASM remains in the normal mode, untill you push it (in my 981 anyways).

Great video! I’ve got a 981 Cayman S coming this week and don’t have PASM. I wasn’t sure if it was too big of a deal or would put people off in the future when I go to sell it , but then talking to a couple of friends who are Porsche owners they said what you have - for road use, it isn’t essential. 2005 997.1 C2S w PASM......it is 16 year old dampener technology, certainly has issues as noted by so many, and I’m trying to understand if a DSC unit is the best remedy versus refreshing with a 2021 state of the art coilover. Certainly the Porsche engineers are not still using 2005 PASM in 2021. My 997.1 would require an additional separate sensor just to be able to run a DSC, thus telling me that the early version of PASM is suboptimal. I’m resolved to improve it, but confused as to DSC vrs coilover. Spirited street use mainly, less frequent performance driver classes on track.

  • @daysofgrace2934

I have PASM with 19 wheels/tyres on and it makes it more tolerable for the road. What you really need with PASM is DSC V1 PASM controller, it takes more sensor inputs in to figure whether the car is cornering hard or just going over rough terrain and adjusts the damping accordingly. You can then Sport on the road whilst having that flat cornering or you can use normal mode where it is softer over rougher ground yet firms up as you start pulling Gs...I watched your DSC review on the Focus RS; prepare to confounded again...

@@knn3th Well you get a more powerful digital signal processor, a programmer to write a code to control a suspension system and a suspension engineer to write you a set of dampening curves. Question is what does it deliver over the £500 unit Porsche will sell you. More comfort when you're getting from A to B and more handling when you are 'going for a drive'. After two years of driving the Boxster with the first 3 months without the DSC; I would pay £1500 for it and I'm not made of money. It is slightly ahead of the 718 generation of PASM systems. You can't use Sport on UK roads without it...

I don’t have experience with pasm on cayman, but comparing my old 997.2 C2 which did not have pasm with my old 997.1tt which did have pasm, what I noticed is that the normal pasm setting is softer than the non-pasm standard setting, which is in turn softer than the pasm sport setting. Personally I find the non-pasm suspension to be still a bit too firm for daily use. So I think even if one does not plan to track the car, pasm is still worth considering, esp if one prefers softer, more comfortable ride for daily use.

Good vid Mark. For what it’s worth, on 20’s at least and on a 981, PASM gives a better ride than standard in its softer setting. The ride without PASM on 20’s was more fidgety and PASM seemed to smooth it out. Whether that’s just a 981 thing or a 20” wheel thing, I don’t know. I still wouldn’t rule out a car without PASM though if everything else was right.

  • @lairdinho
    @lairdinho 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Good to see this kind of video. But one point of constructive criticism...The 'what do Porsche engineers knows' quip is a little silly. The factory setup is one size fits all. We don't all have the same preferences. In an ideal world, you'd be able to tell Porsche how you like your cars and they'd set it up for you. As it is, it's a generic setup with an eye on safety / the lowest common denominator of driver and if you want it set up to your own preferences, you can't realistically go to Porsche. Neither PASM nor the standard passive setup on the 987 is that brilliant, chiefly because it's a compromise for a mass market remit. It's not hard to improve on it if you want a more controlled and focused drive. That said I agree the damping is OTT in PASM Sport mode. But the body control is lacking in standard mode. Solution is probably the DSC aftermarket box...

These are not regular dampers, these are active dampers. Oil is constantly being pumped in to them, they do not go "flat". If they break, they go in to the hardest setting, which is also the safest. I cannot even find a service interval for PASM.

This is interesting but you didn't really answer the fundamental question. Comparing the PASM-equipped Porsche with other models is nice, but you did not compare a Cayman with PASM to a Cayman without. Given that normal mode in PASM is reportedly more plush than the standard suspension by itself, what I was expecting this video to answer was where on your scale the standard suspension is in terms of comfort, compared to the starting point of a Cayman with PASM. So - have you driven a Cayman both with and without PASM? And where on your scale would a Cayman without PASM rank? Otherwise you might want to reconsider your video title to something like "How PASM Compares to other Adaptive Suspensions"
