  • Well, I'm busy overthinking again. This time it's about my EDC flashlight.
This was a live-stream this morning that I lost my internet feed in the middle of so I am posting this backup recording.
I've been carrying an Olight i3T for over a year now. I'm only unhappy with one aspect of it I discuss in the video. So I'm starting a search to see if I can find a good, pocket-size, flashlight to replace it as my go-to EDC flashlight. I already ordered the Lumintop Too AA 2.0 and am planning to return it. There are a couple what I'll call fatal flaws I didn't like about it. Let me know in the comments if you carry this flashlight and if I am overstressing these points.
    Currently carrying:
    Olight i3T - amzn.to/3hpQsx0
    Bought to review but returning:
    Lumintop Tool AA 2.0 - amzn.to/3928Xmk
We'll also discuss the three other options I am looking at:
    Olight Warrior Mini 2 - amzn.to/2VBlQAJ
    Olight i5T - amzn.to/2XgccDW
    Streamlight ProTac 2L-x - amzn.to/2YQhnvn
    18650 batteries for the Streamlight - amzn.to/3EeVfeu
I'm also considering but did not discuss the
    ProTac 1L-1AA - amzn.to/2XeD5Ze
I'm going to start a series of videos on EDC to parallel my series on The Collapse. I take my EDC very seriously as I discuss toward the end of the video. We'll be discussing what I carry on my person and in my truck bag.
As always, thanks for watching, and don't forget to subscribe -

The downside I always thought of with the magnetic charge cable was losing my cable especially in SHTF situation where I might have to charge off a solar or other type charger but can't find that magnetic charger.

Greetings, I have a few of the Olight i3t flashlights and I'm very fond of them. They're an excellent light for a quick us light and if their brightness can do the job for you. I especially love the Brushed Stainless Steel i3t.
I also have the newest version of the Lumintop Tool AA light which doesn't have the illuminated tail switch, and mine work wonderfully with regular 14500 batteries. I find they work better than the proprietary battery... they're slightly shorter and I believe it's the reason I don't have the issue you're have with yours in Strob Mode. I believe the slight increase in length of the 14500 with the USB charging port on the battery causes the issue.
If you're looking for a fabulous EDC Light that is very bright, but also has the lower output modes and Strob Mode, and has fabulous run time, look to the Olight S2R Baton... it's not much bigger than either of these lights, and is far more versatile and has much more runtime with its rechargeable 18650 battery.
I like and use 14500 & 16340 flashlights a lot, but their not a light for those who need/want longer runtimes. And even if I'm carrying one of my S2R Batons, I still always have a i3t with a high capacity Low Self-discharge NiMH AAA which will give me around 1 hour and 6 minutes of good run-time with usable light if needed. Yeah... I'm weird and carry at least two lights on me all the time when working in the forest (wildlife biologist) at night.... often three... 🙄
If set on a 14500, take a look at the Sofrin SP10V3... remarkable light with a 14500. Yes it will get hot on turbo, but turbo is meant for short bursts to have a quick look at something at distance. But the medium mode is very useful with the 14500 batteries. And even high can be used for a few minutes before it gets hot and steps down to medium.
    Best regards,
    George Silver Hawk

@@VincentSmith1776 I like the Warrior Mini II and S2R Baton-II for EDC. And I seen to always have either the i5R or i5T with me also. For me... at least with my i5 lights, the i5t some to work better with a high capacity NiMH Rechargeable AA... so I'm carrying an i5T with the high capacity NiMH as my backup light most of the time... and like you, when needing to dress up.

I have the Nichia version of the Tool AA, and I love it. I have used Olights (S2A and i3e) in the years prior, and thought I'd try something other than the white (6500k) beam. The Tool AA nichia has fewer lumens but better run times than the cool white version:
      Nichia Tool AA using 14500:
      Low/Med/High/Turbo lumens: 6.5 / 55 / 300 / 500 run times: 30h / 6h 45m / 1h 5m / 45m
      Nichia Tool AA using Ni-MH:
      Low/Med/High/Turbo lumens: 1.5 / 18 / 110 / 165 run times: 150h / 14h 20m / 1h 45m / 1h 20m

A problem I have found with the rechargeable batteries, they run until they shut themselves off. The problem is you get no warning to when the battery is getting low, it just turns off.
With the typical lithium batteries you will get dimming when the battery is low, so you get some warning before you are in complete darkness.

    • @VincentSmith1776
      @VincentSmith1776  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I found out after filming that the Olight i3T and i5T aren't rated by the mfr to use lithium batteries. I found that odd. The Eneloops are nimh and give really good brightness compared to alkaline.

@@VincentSmith1776 alot of people use 10440 battery on their i3T it works & still have a high & low but lumens go higher too & 10440 batteries have lower capacity than eneloops so it's not applicable to you but if you need more lumens it's the way to go just bring spare batteries.

Regarding the Olight Warrior Mini 2, (a) if the charging circuit is in the flashlight, the charging circuit (or a battery management system (BMS)) won’t let current flow backwards, which would prevent a short circuit; and (b) if Olight put/designed a diode inline with the charging input, the diode won’t let current flow backwards, which would also prevent a short circuit. If I had to bet, I’d bet that the answer is (b). You might purchase one off Amazon and test the voltage across the tail cap. If there’s a voltage across it, it will likely short circuit if you put a piece of metal (e.g., a key) across it, and you can then return it to Amazon. I really doubt you’ll find a voltage across it.
I carry the Streamlight MicroStream Ultra-Compact. It, too, has an AAA battery. I have a lot of flashlights that take AA or AAA batteries, since those have become prevent and will probably be easy to come by if there is a shortage of some type or some other situation. I also have a plastic shoebox full of AA or AAA batteries to get me further down the road/calendar if needed. I’m also looking into getting some rechargeable AA and AAA batteries and a solar charging system for them. Project Farm did several reviews on rechargeable AA batteries, which might be of interest to you. Paul Harrell has a Thanks Giving special episode that he did where he went through his different “bags.” I also have a shelter-in-place/get home bag in my truck. I’ll also have one in my office (17 stories up) when I have to go back there.

17 stories? I'd have a parachute or at least a dropline. I had one in my office on the 3rd floor. I'm lucky I wasn't there when a shooter came in. But that was my alternate egress plan.

What's your choice to keep orings lubed?

    • @VincentSmith1776
      @VincentSmith1776  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well, if you think I overanalyze things go check out some flashlight chat boards in regards to this question LOL! Those guys take o-ring lube way too seriously IMHO. My opinions - don't overthink this too much. People who get into chemical interaction analysis for a flashlight overlook one thing - if your flashlight is that important (scuba work, LEO, mining, etc) then you should be replacing your o-rings on a PM schedule at about 25% of their lifespan anyway. So the chemical interactions would never be an issue. We're not talking about space shuttle SRB's here.
My take - if you want to really get serious for EDC purposes go with a designed lube like Nyogel 760G or such. You can track down 5ml tibes for $6 so the cost really isn't an issue if you're toting around a $60 torch. But - some of the answer relies on if you're lubricating a twist-on cap. Some of these lubes make that twist action stiffer. Keep in mind you should be lubricating the threads as well as the o-rings.
Short answer - for EDC use, without certain knowledge of the o-ring's composition, absent access to a designed lubricant, go with dielectric silicone grease. Absent that - vaseline. But keep an eye on your o-rings with each battery swap/charge. If you start to see issues - degrease, swap o-rings and try a different base lube.
