  • Project Ruby gets a face lift! This is a long video!! It is a full on, how-to video. My son and I will show you the step-by-step process of how to weld together one of these awesome bumpers from Coastal Offroad! The details of the bumper and where you can get one are below!
    Thanks for watching!
    ********************************************************************
    www.coastaloff...
    This is a full plate winch bumper weld-together kit for the 3rd generation (1996-2002) Toyota 4Runner. It features a bolt-on design, protected winch mount, and the best approach angle of any bumper on the market. This bumper allows you to forget about approach angle and substantially improves the offroad capability of your 4Runner. It offers excellent protection from rocks, trees and animal strikes and has been kept to a weight of 84lbs through careful design work.
    Forget the outrageous lead times of many bumper options that are measured in months. All of our bumper kits ship within 5-10 business days.
    Don't see exactly what you're after? We at Coastal Offroad are more than happy to work with our customers to design their dream bumper. Feel free to send us an email for any custom requests.

    Good job overall but you put the joints together wrong hence the fitment issues and will result in a weaker finish. Should line up the inside edges of each peice not sit them on top. That way it creates a V to catch the weld and ensures sufficient penetration for both bits of parent material. It also removes the need to bevel peices for correct fitment

    My only complaint about the job you did is that long bolt that goes through the frame, you should have cut a small
    Piece of tubing and tack weld it in place so that when you crank that bolt tight it can’t crush the frame rail. But at this point it’s probably not much of an issue.
    I would also advise when welding plates like that together make sure there is a bevel Cut in, or that the plates are only touching at the inside corners, this will leave a valley to fill with weld, so when you grid it smooth it will still have enough weld to be strong. (Jody from welding tips and tricks has some great examples of what I’m talking about if you look for outside corner joint videos)
    However this video is a year old and if it’s held up to abuse all this time it’s probably fine. More tips for future projects. Or for other people Looking to do a project like this.

    • @jfoutdoors4337
      @jfoutdoors4337  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cbchevy74 thanks for the feedback. I see you point on the tubing inside the frame rail. Makes sense. As for beveling the plates. I did for those that needed it and most of the edges lined up on the inside corners. Not to mention, I welded the outside and inside of the bumper

    Excellent documentation, Jearred. The only other advice I'd have is using a good respirator (like 3M quality) while spray painting and esp. clear coating. N99 filter for vapors and particulates is the best for this kind of work. Spray painting in an enclosed garage with no vapor ventilation going out is not good for your lungs.

    • @JBennett530

      probably but if you can find a used hobart welder for a bit more I'd go that route, I picked up a 140a Hobart for 225 about 6 years ago and it still functions like new and it's about 20 years old. Get good wire (Lincoln NR-211-MP or Radnor E71T-11 or any E71T-11) and clean all the metal good

  • @skudwoofer

    I recently welded a Coastal Offroad front bumper for a 5th generation for a freind. I did not tack it in place as the directions state. There was some minor trimming required on the inside part of the fenders. Basically some small cuts with an angle grinder. Other than that the bumper fit great.
