  • About red weaver ants
✓ The treasure of nature that surrounds us holds many mysteries within it. Among these, the world of insects is an exceptionally fascinating and intriguing aspect.
✓ The red weaver ants that we see everywhere around us are the amazing architects of this world.
✓ These ants, which shine in red or brown color, are known for their unique skill in nest building, hence they are called weaver ants.
✓ These ants use a silk-like substance secreted by their larvae to weave together leaves on the upper parts of trees in tropical regions, creating extensive nests.
✓ These ants hunt and eat small insects, as well as consume nectar, honeydew, and other small creatures to satisfy their hunger. They also spend most of their lives gathering food, protecting, maintaining, and expanding their nest.
✓ When foreign creatures attack their nest, these ants not only retaliate but also release formic acid to incapacitate their opponents.
✓ As for how these weaver ants build their nests, some ants first begin to pull and join leaves together using their mandibles and legs. Meanwhile, other ants set out to survey leaves that seem suitable for nest building.
✓ When some ants successfully bend a leaf, pulling one edge towards another to join them, other nearby worker ants join in the effort, helping to make it successful.
✓ Look at this worker's endeavor; it is struggling to bring the detached leaf and its kin back to the nest.
✓ The worker ants, carrying larvae in their mandibles, reach the spot where the leaves need to be joined.
✓ When the worker ants gently press the larvae with their mandibles and tap them with their antennae, the larvae secrete a thread of silk from their mouth.
✓ Then the worker ants use the silk thread to attach it to the desired part of the leaves.
✓ In this way, they build a secure nest.
✓ Nests built this way are extremely strong, so much so that even water cannot penetrate them.
✓ Weaver ants typically construct a large nest in less than 24 hours.
