    There IS a difference between the を version (納豆を食べれる) and the が version (納豆が食べれる), and the confusion it's due to the Japanese language nature of let inanimate objects to perform action not usually expressed in English. so the を version actually says "I can eat natto", while the が version is expressing "natto can be eaten [by me]" (by the implied ø が pronoun, in this case "I")

So I thought to myself after you mentioned the bonus section and how nagai can can turn into nagaku, I really appreciate this man and he has no clue. Would it be okay to ask you to go in-depth on Genki 2, Chapter 13, Section 3 Part C. page 38 (3rd Edition). The textbook asks us to talk about a picture taken at a party, and it has a lot of intricate things. Combining all the vocabulary with the grammar, it is a bit overwhelming, especially for someone who studies by myself. But, I would like to see someone go over it.

    At 33:20 you said "つまらなさそう" but it is a i adjective said in a positive form. Why using さそう?

    • @ToKiniAndy
      @ToKiniAndy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yuki and I just discussed this to try and figure out what's going on here. We ended up having to look it up. It appears that つまらなさそう is a mistake. But a COMMON mistake that many Japanese people make I guess. I've been copying all the Japanese people around me who apparently don't know it's a mistake. I suspect it's likely because most JAPANESE people think that the adjective ending of ない comes from the negative of ある (ない). You would conjugate that as さそう. You are correct that with a normal い adjective you would expect つまらなそう, and grammatically this is what you'd go for. But you will hear つまらなさそう a LOT. In fact, it may even be more common than the correct conjugation! haha Languages can be weird like that.

    yo one question, if the potential form for ichidan verbs is れる/られる and the passive form is also れる/られる, how do you distinguish them in conversation? For godan verbs is simple, the potential form is える and the passive form is ある, but with ichidan verbs, they are similar, that's the cause of my confusion, i hope it's not the usual context.

    There's an example sentence in frequency I have a question about. You say: 一か月に二日ぐらい食べに行きます。Instead, does ending it with 行きに食べます have the same meaning?

      No, that wouldn't work. 食べに行く = go to eat 行きに食べる would be eat to go. Which doesn't make sense.

    Hey question for your first example dialogue. When you used みえない that isn't the potential form edition correct? Because you translated it as "can't see the clouds". But isn't the negative potential form for みえる actually みえられない? Just wasn't sure. Thanks.

      Yes, correct. I actually had to correct this at some point either in the next lesson or in one of the bonus videos. 見える to be visible. So potential is 見られる for 見る since it's an Ichican verb.

      @@ToKiniAndy Ahh ok thanks. I thought I was going crazy for a second. BTW, any books you recommend after Genki 2? I see you've done other videos for other textbooks I think, and I'm just curious once I finish Genki 2 what direction I should head in.

      @@astrostar49 after Genki 2 I've been covering Quartet. I'd recommend either that direction, or changing gears into semi-full "immersion" style learning.
