I went vegetarian almost two years ago and my hair seriously started falling out. I went to a nutritionist a few months ago and we started logging my food and realized I was getting very little protein and fat in my diet. I've added protein shakes with chia seeds and a whole bunch of other forms of protein and my hair is now back to normal.

Been noticing the same thing! I started taking biotin pills but will look into protein shakes!

That's interesting... my hair's been falling out for several months, I asked my doctor if it was because I perhaps wasn't getting enough protein and he said I'd have to have a serious deficiency for it to affect my hair. I had a blood test and everything came back fine anyway.

    • @JW424

Fallen Poet When we started logging my food intake I was getting hardly any protein in my diet so I may have been really deficient. I didn't even connect it to my hair until I noticed far less shedding when I washed it. Adding a protein shake may help. Good luck. I know it is frustrating.

***** thanks so much for your reply! I'm also vegan so this may be the case for me too. I'll definitely look into increasing my iodine intake :)

That's strange. I was raised on a meat diet, and I had hair problems since the age of 14. At 16 it was falling out like crazy, it went half the density. Then, I became vegetarian (and I mean, proper fresh cooked meals with beans, rice, vegetables, herbs, yogurt, eggs, cheese and plenty of fresh fruit = healthy vegetarian) and my hair stopped falling completely (after a year). When I added more fruit in my diet, my hair completely stopped falling. I wash my hair, it doesn't clog the drains, I dry it and no hair comes out. I rarely comb my hair because I never find myself covered in fallen hair like I used to (I always had long hair). The days when I have to clean my coat or my jumper from the fallen hair have gone. I don't think my diet has massive amounts of protein (average amounts), and even my iron is within range but at the lower end of the spectrum. So for me, it was the opposite, the vegetarian+fruit diet helped my hair more than anything I could imagine, and it was not the high protein or the high iron. I think that hair needs the complex array of vitamins that you find in fruits. I am not proud to say I am a bit low in iron and I am on the path to fixing it, but it clearly has no impact on the health of my hair. I need to add more whole cereals + dry fruits to fix the low iron, because I didn't eat much of that. A bowl of muesli has 3x the iron in meat, however you need to eat it often and with Orange juice to make sure it all gets absorbed. Vegetarianism implies a wider knowledge of your food!
Also, I know from Dr. Robert Morse that a detoxification phase implies fatigue, skin breakouts and hair fall (among others). I went vegetarian slowly, so I avoided the sudden detox. But if you make a big sudden change, and you also eat less than usual (you'd be constantly half-fasting if you don't eat enough food), then your detox will be more violent. Eating less food, in itself, can trigger detox, and if you quit meat and dairy then the detox will be strong. Also, depending on your body, a sudden vegan switch might not be enough to fix mal-absorption, if you happen to suffer from it. If your body is 'clogged' in toxins, it will absorb nutrients poorly. Getting healthy the natural way is not so easy, and it's not fast either. You go through many stages of healing, some are pretty but some are not so much.
And what protein does = it stops the detox.

    • @d26s10
      @d26s10 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

My hair is pretty fine, it was thicker as a teenager but now it seems to fall out so much easier. What I find helps is to have an olaplex treatment and use the no. 3 hair mask at home once a week. It repairs all of the damage that the sun, heat styling and hair dye does. I also give my scalp and really good massage to stimulate the blood flow to the roots every time I wash it. Try and not wash your hair everyday, use dry shampoo and see how long you can go. I also use Avedas thickening tonic, comes in a dark red bottle and it really does thicken your hair strands to give a fuller appearance.

basically I do the same thing but I recommended to all of you ladies to use wooden brush, it makes a lot of differences for your hair. Wooden brush absorbs natural oil from your hair and when you brush it through it spreads the natural oil from your hair and from the brush.

Niomi u said "Quinoa has SUCH a lot of protein".. but Actually it has very little protein (especially the the amount of calories u would need to consume). Only about 7.5 grams per WHOLE Cup.. Tempeh & Tofu however have SO much more protein, 20 Grams per only HALF Cup... MORE than Double for HALF the amount... even Kidney beans have 13 Grams per Cup...making Quinoa packing NOT so much protein for the volume u must eat. Just an FYI for anyone who wants to know.

    What my Peruvian mom does:
Boil the quinoa. Choose your preferred amount and blend it with milk and sugar (in a blender or whatever you use). I like it cold and to me it's just like a milkshake although it is more dense. It's a good breakfast choice because quinoa is full of good stuff for your body and it just helps you wake up and start the day.

Tips I've learnt for offensively soft hair and no split ends (so much so it took 10 months without seeing a hairdresser before I started to get any):
Brush your hair before you get in the shower so then you can gently brush it whilst the Conditioner is in.
Put a hair serum in when your hair is wet (I use salon professionals gold one and the aussie one)
Never use heat on your hair
I use aussie 3 min miracle just about every time I was my hair and I leave it in for as long as possible
I used to use the Charles Worthington melting balm which gave me the softest hair so now I am looking for a replacement
Tie your up loosely quite a bit to stop wind damaging your hair
Coconut oil has never been as good as other hair masks I have tried
Never towel dry your hair. I just give it a quick squeeze in the towel and then put the towel across my shoulders
Rinse your hair with cold water at the end of the shower (generally a good tip for stopping your boobs going south as well)
Other things I still need to try:
    Silk pillows
Vitamins with vitamin K in etc designed for hair and nails
Cotton shirt to dry your hair
    Pureology shampoo for coloured hair

"I don't know how it works" - Well, blowing the hair out really covers split ends. And the product is putting them in place and making your hair shiny. There is no way to actually repair split ends. You can either chop them off or make them lay flat against each other so that you can't see them unless you search for them.
This video is all about how to make you hair LOOK healthy, not be healthy. And this is fine, everyone needs a little bit of extra help once in a while.

Being an Aveda stylist, I totally knew Aveda would pop up in your hair care video since you've raved about them before. The Damage Remedy line is life and I'm going blonde slowly and that split end repair is my saviour haha. Aveda is such a nice hair care line being anywhere from 97%-99% organic and naturally derived! Thats incredibly hard to find especially because everything is sustainably resourced. Some times things get discontinued if it's not sustainable anymore and I think that is so awesome. Very Vegan friendly :) Although they're owned by Estee Laudre and I'm pretty sure they do test on animals but the salon I work at just had some staff go to an Aveda conference to learn more about it, and they've stated that although it is that way with Estee Laudre is, they continue to make sure Aveda products are people tested only. You should totally look up Horst Rachelboker (probably spelled that wrong) and learn more about him and why he started Aveda if you haven't already. He's really quite a visionary :) If you ever find yourself in Canada, more specifically Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, stop by Breze Salon and Day Spa. It's the only Aveda salon in the city

    • @xAicirtapx
      @xAicirtapx 8 ปีที่แล้ว +46

I know they made it sound like it "disappeared", but I think what they mean is that it disappears in the sense that you can't see them. Normally split ends are reeeeeally obvious and make the ends look frizzy, but I think using this kind off smoothes them out, making it appear like you don't have them, although not "removing" them :)

As soon as she said that her split ends instantly looked better I was sure there was a silicone in there, since there's nothing that can actualy repair a strand of hair that has split. It's just makeup for your hair, just make believe... I would be surprised as to how unknowledgeable Niomi was about this, but her hair is generally damaged and looks like straw when she doesn't get it professionally done and slathered in silicone.

it's also a silicone that is naturally harvested, so I'm not that careful with it as I would be with other products. so far the whole damage remedy line doesn't seem to build up in my hair while the organix brand is doing that really quickly. (like, in comparison)

Cornelia Hanimann I am not talking about the chemical element silicon (silicium) but the synthetic polymer silicone! And there is no natural silicone, it's all synthetic. Either way I found my skin doesn't like any silicone, not on the head and not in my face. So I'm really careful about that

Farangis08 well I was speaking about the molecule, not the element...is there even an element? it's a molecule...and as far as I was informed, there are different types some that are long and some that are short. ya that one is true, there's no natural silicone.

Product build-up has been a HUGE problem for me these past couple of months. The top of my hair felt greasy while the bottom was really dried out. My hairdresser gave me a shampoo to use about once a week that removes product residue from my hair. She said to really focus on the ends and always brush through conditioner afterwards. I had to use it a couple times in a row at first but it worked wonders for my hair!

Yeh I always leave the conditioner on for a few mins too, usually just scrub my body or shave my legs while waiting. I don't put it on my roots though, don't think they need conditioning.

quinoa is high in protein, however it does not have all the aminoacids meat has, therefore it cannot be used for building muscles. brocoli has some minoacids that completes quinoa's protein. so always have quinoa and brocoli together!

My tip is to not wash your hair too often as it will dry out, therefore your hair will rapidly try to produce oils, making it greasy x and I highly recommend investing in a heat protectant spray/ serum to protect your hair from the damage caused by curling irons etc.

Loved these tips! Although, for me the hair-braiding over night doesn't really work as my hair is really thin. When I open a braid it doesn't have these nice big curls you're talking about because the hair is braided a lot tighter and with smaller streaks than with thick hair. It looks awful, so that I always have to wash or straighten my hair after opening a braid (or even a ponytail). :(
