CLIP DESCRIPTION:
While exploring the hotel, Danny (Danny Lloyd) encounters the ghosts of the murdered Grady twins.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" -- or, rather, a homicidal boy in Stanley Kubrick's eerie 1980 adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel. With wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and psychic son Danny (Danny Lloyd) in tow, frustrated writer Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) takes a job as the winter caretaker at the opulently ominous, mountain-locked Overlook Hotel so that he can write in peace. Before the Overlook is vacated for the Torrances, the manager (Barry Nelson) informs Jack that a previous caretaker went crazy and slaughtered his family; Jack thinks it's no problem, but Danny's "shining" hints otherwise. Settling into their routine, Danny cruises through the empty corridors on his Big Wheel and plays in the topiary maze with Wendy, while Jack sets up shop in a cavernous lounge with strict orders not to be disturbed. Danny's alter ego, "Tony," however, starts warning of "redrum" as Danny is plagued by more blood-soaked visions of the past, and a blocked Jack starts visiting the hotel bar for a few visions of his own. Frightened by her husband's behavior and Danny's visit to the forbidding Room 237, Wendy soon discovers what Jack has really been doing in his study all day, and what the hotel has done to Jack.

Although the flashes of the murdered Grady twins could be the 80s equivalent of a jump scare given the suddenness of the image and the rise in Penderecki's music.
The fact that the kid doesn't know he's playing in a horror movie is just incredible.
@Josip Marušić honestly some horror movies would be awkward or straight up funny if no or different music was played

It's not a horror movie it's just about a family who's husband went insane and tried to kill his wife and son
@@Summoned_J Yes, that's what we call a horror movie.
@@Summoned_J uhm that's the definition of horror.
Even before we get to the twin hallway, I'm already creeped out by the camera being so far behind Danny. The audience realizes two things: 1) He's too far away for anyone to get to to protect him and 2) when he's out of the shot, we're alone so no one can protect us either
If you start considering that the hotel is the true villain of the movie then the shots imply two things.
1) Something is standing outside room 237 and stalking him.
2) When the camera is following him then whatever was in front of the room is now following him.
There's so many details with just the camera shots of this movie it's incredible.
I personally prefer a strawberry milkshake over a chocolate milkshake.

Idaho students murdered is pretty bad
I don’t think the twins are evil, actually quite the opposite. They don’t cause any harm to Danny and their words to him and the images they show him are a way of warning him of what’s to come if he doesn’t get out of there.
Danny would be trapped in the hotel as a ghost, playing forever and ever and ever for eternity after being brutally murdered with an axe by his father. The twins gave Danny an edge and helped him avoid that same terrible fate that Delbert Grady gave to them.
Nothing is benign in the Overlook. Watch Doctor Sleep, it's the sequel...
Dr sleep sucks and I ignored it
@@ellam3659 Good for you. It's still canon tho and shows the twins are not good.

fun fact the kid didnt know he was playing in a horror movie they filmed all the scary scenes when he wasnt there
Quentin Sandoval I mean the shinning was directed by Kubrick. And he was known to take hundreds of takes sometimes, so if they did do that (which they probably did), I wouldn’t be surprised.

Absolutely, but the twins only had a few scenes. Whereas little Danny kinda carried the movie. @@annc7739
Everyone raved about Nicholson's performance, but Lloyd and Duvall produced some powerhouse stuff in this movie. Danny was 6-7 during the filming. His facial expression is pure terror. Kubrick was supposedly a tyrant on the set, but he knew how to get actors to push themselves to the limit and beyond.

This movie came out when my younger brother (his name is Danny too!) was five years old. My two best friends were twin sisters that lived down the street. We had fun by having him drive his Big Wheel on the sidewalk and the twins would stand together blocking his way and in unison say to him "Hello, Danny. . .come play with us!" LOL!!!

In case anyone didn't know, "The Shining" is actually a power of reading minds and seeing the past, which allows Danny to see the past of the hotel. He sees the past of these girls, who have been killed by the axes. If he didn't possess "The Shining", he would never be able to guess that the twins were dead.
In Doctor Sleep the Shining power is kinda like Charles Xavier and Jean Grey power
@PerrySport It is because those spirits in the hotel want to possess the power of shining from Dany to get powerful and destroy everyone. That is why they also corrupted his father's soul.
@@karmaexists3541 oh
The hotel itself also has “the Shine.” That’s why Danny can link with it and see it’s past residents.

Look at the Jodie-girl in "the amityville horror" (2005) 😱😱😱
Stanley Kubrick was inspired by the exceptional artistic work of artist Diane Arbus. more precisely of her well-known photograph "Identical twins, Roselle, NJ". This photograph was very shocking because the absence of singularity of the two completely identical twins symbolized the loss of human identity and its reification. Stanley Kubrick paid tribute to this artist by adding fantastic horror! Brilliant.

I'll never forget seeing this scene when I was little. It was so scary I covered my ears and buried my face in a pillow. It wasn't just the dead bodies that made it scary, it was the atmosphere and the MUSIC. Old horror movies had the scarf atmosphere and didn't depend on jump scares. Good film making is what makes a movie scary, something that no modern movie other than Insidious 1 has been able to do for me, and that movie only did it because it made you think alot after the credits rolled.
Insidious 1 is excellently crafted in a lot of ways. To me it shares a lot in common with the horror school of thought that The Shining belongs to. It's absolutely one of the scariest horror movies of the last 15 years or so, even if the ending act is a little weak. The first half of that movie is so atmospheric, so much tension and weirdness and music and good performances...The Conjuring 1, as well. James Wan's influences are clear.
Yep, no film since has ever come close to the terror I felt when I first watched this. To the point where I can still freak myself out late at night if I start to play the eerie music in my head...
Despite reviews to the contrary, I find this to be a terrible movie - in the sense of unenjoyable.
I remember as a kid I was so thankful Tony was there to talk to Danny. As a kid, you understood imaginary friends and Tony was actually trying to calm Danny down when he reminds Danny what Mr. Haleren said about it not being real and just a recording in time. Such a deep and brilliant movie this masterpiece is.

Sooooooo relatable
This scene works so well because: 1. We saw these creepy girls earlier in the movie, so they're on the back burner in our minds, waiting to pounce. 2. This was the second part of his ride. The first part was few minutes earlier in the movie, so at this point, you know he's VERY far away from his mother because he's been riding for quite a while. 3. The metallic plucks of the strings (Penderecki) blend with the kitchen, almost as if the building itself is making that racket. Those little jolts get our nervous system nice and aroused for the big jolt around the corner. 4. We subconsciously recall that Big Wheels are not easy to reverse! If he were on foot, he could just turn and sprint, but he's sort of trapped in that cumbersome thing. 5. The dark blue stripe on the hallway floor uncomfortably connects Danny to the girls. Without that stripe, they would seen more remote and benign.

The PREMISE of this scene is the creepiest I've ever seen in a Horror movie.
Mikasa Ackermann lmfao are you joking?
Quite possibly the most memorable scene in the entire film

I just saw this horror masterpiece for the first time! I absolutely loved it! It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.
And the acting from all the actors is utterly phenomenal! 👏👏👏👏💯 💯
Back when horror movies were actually scary and with an interesting plot instead being stupid and with bad acting and CGI
Yeah you don't need jump scares every five seconds. Honestly what scares me much more is psychological horror that messes your mind and makes you think
agree!
If you want a good plot, read the book.
Exactly! I have found one modern horror movie that was decent! It's called hush. It was a really strong plot with good acting. It's on Netlfix
your right they think jumpcares are the future They are not you need like creepy music and freaky scary voices in the background
Ok who *didn't* come from rEaDY PlAYeR oNe?

This is the only scene in the movie to truly scare me
That music is something nightmares only have access to. The feeling of horror and chaotic bloodshed is just.
Scary.

This scene always pops into my head when I walk down a long hotel corridor with doors on both sides. I guess that's the true sign of effective moviemaking lol
I feel like AHS: Hotel is going to get a lot of their inspiration from this incomparable classic.
That's exactly what I was thinking!
Disregard Females I hope this one is more like Asylum
Girls: Do you wanna play
Me: Ok what are we playing
Girls: Dunno
Me: Meh
