    That place you pointed to was actually a tent hotel - a 5 star tent hotel. On one of the best beaches on the island: Pinkies.
    Best way to do the island is to get the ferry from fremantle or hillaries as early as possible in the morning as you can make it. Then get the latest ferry back at around 6 - which is way before sunset in summer. Be warned though - the late afternoon crossing back can be wild. When I was a kid the ferries were a lot bigger and a lot of people would spend the day getting drunk in the rottnest hotel (long gone) so it used to be a bit of a mess coming back.
    If you want to do the Swan river bit you have a choice - just do a separate swan river only trip, or stay the night on the island and come back the next day. There are more hotels on the island now so thats more doable but it can be pricey, because there is not a lot of accommodation on the island. ALternatively, if you have transport theres nice parks, walking tracks and beaches all around the river that you can get great views from. If you go to point walter go when the tide is low so you can walk all the way out along the sandbar.
    In summer, take a full brim hat and a fly net - if an easterly is in the flies from the desert can be blown onto the island and that can be horrible. But follow the winds - or actually do the opposite: go to the south and west end of the island in the morning when theres usually no wind (the beach behind kingston barracks is stunning - as is Cape Vlamingh at the far west of the island - if youre not Australian you can freak out over the giant lizards there), and when the seabreeze kicks in in the early afternoon move to the east and north side of the island (geordie bay, the basin, Pinkies), where you are protected from the wind. Bike is best but you will get a sore arse because, lets face it, you havent been on a bicycle for 10 years you lazy buggers.
    If you stay overnight, take some warm clothes because it gets COLD at night. But sitting under the lighthouse east of Pinkies is a local tradition, practised by everyone whose been going to the island since they were 10 years old.
    Also, in summer you can walk to Penguin island (to the south) across a sandbar in the morning, meet the penguins (who have come ashore to moult) and spend a few hours there before getting the ferry back. You can walk and swim the sandbar back - its usaly chest deep when the tide turns but it can get a bit rough if its windy and you do fall into potholes (wrap up your car keys in something waterproof and put it in a back pack). A lot of tourists have drowned there so crossing the sandbar in the afternoon is not recommended, although if youre a local like me using the ferry is reagarded as poor form. early morning the sand bar is ankle deep.
    You can also get to Carnac island - between rottnest to the north and garden island to the south - to swim with the seals but you cant go off the beach there because the island is full of tiger snakes. Because of that you can only get there by private boat or supervised cruises. If its rutting season the male seals will chase you up the beach so be careful because they are fast on sand. In the water they will swim with you.
    The north end of garden island - which is a giant naval base - is also open to the public if you have your own boat, but youre not supposed to stay overnight. If you trek inland a bit on garden island there are natural hot springs, which are great but you will smell a bit like sulphur for a while. Theres also a giant sand dune on the north end that you can slide down into the water (take a cardboard box for that), but its hard work getting back up. sand is crystal white and water is clear as air.
    ps in peak periods its best to organise your own bike or rent from the ferry companies, because sometimes there are no bikes left for rent on the island. Rented bikes arent ideal but its that or the bus. If youre spending time on the island you can walk to the best swimming beaches from the settlement and get the bus to see the rest. You can also go up the lighthouse and into the old ww2 gun emplacements and tunnels.
    ps youre not supposed to touch or feed the quokkas. But all the tourists do anyway. Locals tend to ignore them. Also, they live down south too - around the area where the Giant's Walk (trees) is. But you wont see them there.
    pps nice videos. Its nice to see people who dont go to Sydney and Melbourne and think theyve seen Australia.

    I live in Melbourne now but I miss WA. Melbourne has a lot to offer in terms of eateries, shopping, culture, nightlife etc. but WA has plenty of strong points too and its a bit more of an outdoors place, due to the climate. One thing I have noticed that a lot of people tend to get wrong about the CBD is that it tends to be quiet on the weekend but busy during the week, when everyone is in the office and all the shops are open. There is plenty to do in the suburbs or out of town on the weekend and there are massive shopping centres dotted around, plus the beach. Actually I was going to say that there are much better beaches than Fremantle, so I hope that is an indication. The city absolutely sprawls - particularly along the coast. Northbridge is quite busy on the weekend in terms of clubs and pubs, but there are other places to head out to. There are also a lot of places you missed in Fremantle. One thing you probably didn't get to appreciate is the huge British expat community in Perth. The other thing is that you've got to remember that you are visiting the state in the middle of winter, so the weather may not show WA's best side at all times. The major population centres outside of Perth are predominantly between Perth and Margaret River/Augusta. The road system and choices you make along the way down, and how much time you spend in the South West region is going to significantly impact your perception of the state. The government has spent a lot of money in recent years creating a bypass freeway that cuts out all of the towns and cities along the way down for efficient transport/ trucking etc. So I have seen TH-camrs drive all the way down and basically conclude there is nothing in WA, except Perth. This is very untrue and a little upsetting - its just that they've cut inland and missed major cities including Rockingham, Mandurah, Bunbury and Busselton. It might be worth spending a bit of extra time to actually drive through each of these, plus the drive will be less monotonous and you'll see far more sights, including the coast and the waterways. I would actually stop in Busselton though to check things out, including the 1.6km jetty and the bay. I personally think the most interesting part of WA is between Busselton and Margaret River. As you go along, you get the most picturesque calm beaches like Meelup and Eagle Bay, and then you turn Cape Naturaliste and you get to arguably the best surf beaches in the world from Yalingup to Gracetown and Margaret River, before reaching Cape Leeuwin and Augusta where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. The area has some of the best wineries in the world, as well as fresh produce, chocolate, cheese etc. I am shocked when I seen TH-camrs fly through that area and not stop for a fantastic meal at one of the big wineries like Leeuwin, Vasse Felix etc. They're completely oblivious to the fact that this is an area that many acknowledge as their favourite, of the entire the country. I recall the most memorable meal of my life was had at Leeuwin Estate in the middle of winter. There are many interesting caves in the area too. These sorts of opportunites diminish greatly after you leave this area, so please try to make the most of it. Tourism is strongly promoted down that way, so if you want some ideas or you want to ask questions, the tourist bureau in Busselton or one of the other towns will have heaps of information. I grew up on a farm down there and I keep having thoughts about how to dump the corporate life and get back there or if I could even head back to retire. One last tip is to be mindful of speed cameras. Every state polices speed differently - in WA the police put up disguised black roadside cameras in random locations and you might not even realise you've passed one. The fines are quite expensive, so its best not to go much over the limit if you can help it. I really hope you have a great time and the weather holds up.

      @@MollyThompsonx_ Sweet - just thought you might have had the chance to read a bit of this while driving about. I feel a bit sad when people come all the way out here and somehow miss a lot of the key attractions, don't have such a good time, and then get the wrong impression. I'm glad it sounds like you guys didn't and I look forward to following you around WA.

    Have you been checked for asthma? Sorry if that’s too personal or obvious but I was the exact same when exercising (I still am tbh cause I’m also unfit 🤣) BUT I found out I have asthma and now use my blue inhaler when I exercise and it helps SO much 🤯 😅 Also…QUOKKAS🥹🫶🏼

    • @MollyThompsonx_
      @MollyThompsonx_  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually haven’t been and I do keep saying that I want to be tested for it!! I definitely will get round to it when I’m home because more than anything I find it super annoying when I’m doing any kind of exercise coz I always have to stop to feel like I can inhale properly😅😭 but they’ll probably just tell me I’m unfit😅😅😅
