    As a german, believe me when i say that we are not offended at all, instead we really enjoy it when people try to pronounce the german words. I really liked that episode, would like another one of those or maybe someone is gonna play with a german commander deck in the future?

      @@faultier1158 that's something I love about Magic. I am from germany and learned a lot of english vocabulary through the names of the cards. and on top of that, I can understand every card that's written in latin letters, because you always find some key element words like "land", "un/tap" or "creature".

      @@TRTSMTT Yeah. You know what kind of text to expect on Magic cards, so your pattern recognition can just do its thing.
      Even as a child, the text on English cards has always been way easier to understand for me than the text in books (for example). It kind of feels more like code.

    Today Graham learned about false friends: "Wächter" is not "Watcher".
    I also find it amusing that Graham reads most umlauts as their non-umlauts equivalent, but then says "Trampelschäden" intead of "Trampelschaden". Anyway, I appreciate the attempts! ;-)

    • @amyloriley
      @amyloriley 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Jojoforpres A false friend, in linguistics, is not about switching up letters "cht" in "Watcher / Wächter.,"
      It's about a word in one language that looks a lot like a word in another language, so you assume that would be the translation of the word. While in reality, it means something else completely. "Die" is a German word that looks a lot like the English "to die," meaning "becoming death" so you could assume that the German "die" has the same meaning. Something with "death." While in reality, it has the same meaning as the English "the." In linguistics, we call this false friends. The same with "Wächter" not meaning "Watcher," but "Guard" or "Guardian."

    Fun-Fakt for the captions at 0:32 while speaking German we still use English words like "to draft" and such.
    So in German it would actually say:
    "Nicht draften! Enthält ausländische Karten!"
    Notice how we add the "-en" to "draft" so that the word feels right while speaking German.

    Really enjoyed this Episode :D Graham is hillarious trying to pronounce german words.
    Yes there is no " 's " in german, its just an added "s". Some germans do use the ' sometimes, but that comes from the influence of the english language, its grammatically wrong.
    The thing with kicker (Bonus). All people i know, who prefer the english language over a german translation, hate the german translations. Me included. There often stupid and make no sense. From movie titles to magic cards. We also get a false translated card every other set (Keranos God of Storm, Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, etc.)
    Or they think that we all are stupid and make the translation super easy to understand. For Example trample. In german "Trampeln" would be enough, that creature tramples. But no, its Trampelschaden (trample damage).

    Graham's German sounds like Swedish (like the Swedish chef). You need to shorten your consonants and sound angrier.

    small note for educational purposes: people in Austria, Lichtenstein and parts of Switzerland also speak German. so when talking about speaking the language german, people from german speaking countries would be more appropriate than just saying (/apologizing) to Germans. sincerely an Austrian
