    Okay I knew German was weird with trample - "verursacht Trampelschaden" means "deals trample-damage" - but the flying thing takes the cake:
    the permanent has or rather _is_ "fliegend" - flying, but it gives other permanents "Flugfähigkeit" - flight-capability

  • @IRFine
    @IRFine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +96

    Terminology guide
    “Masterpieces” is the umbrella term for the rare alt-art alt-frame non-set cards in a very small fraction of boosters. This includes:
    “Expeditions” for Battle For Zendikar and Oath of the Gatewatch
    “Inventions” for Kaladesh and Aether Revolt
    “Invocations” for Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation

      @hpdre7437 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does it also include the Mystic Archives from Strixhaven?

    • @IRFine
      @IRFine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@hpdre7437 No, mystical archive is its own thing, not part of the Masterpiece Series. Being four years apart, and having guaranteed one per booster are two important things that set Mystical Archive apart. I think it’s considered part of Project Booster Fun.

    • @matthewyoho5422
      @matthewyoho5422 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hpdre7437 "Does it also include the Mystic Archives from Strixhaven?"
      No, those are similar in that they were cards from outside the set itself in a unique frame (though that's not true of all cards in the masterpiece sub-sets, all 3 of those featured certain cards also included within the regular set), but the Mystical Archive cards were in every pack; what makes the things in the very short lived Masterpiece Series (which the original Zendikar Expeditions were retroactively considered to be a part of) masterpieces, and not just alternate art/frame treatments like we're inundated with these days, were that while they "could" appear in regular boosters of those sets - there being only the one sort of booster at the time you see - the odds of any specific booster containing a masterpiece were... low.
      Off the top of my head I want to say you averaged 1 of those per CASE of the set (a case being 6 entire booster boxes) - they were very much "lottery cards".

    • @matthewyoho5422
      @matthewyoho5422 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      "“Masterpieces” is the umbrella term for the rare alt-art alt-frame non-set cards in a very small fraction of boosters."
      Clarification: masterpieces were not actually explicitly "non-set cards" - the majority of them were cards not part of the main Standard-legal set, yes, but all 3 entries in the short lived series also included a number of cards that had just been printed into Standard or were being reprinted into Standard via the main set.
      In the case of the masterpiece cards in Aether Revolt for instance, rather than a Chalice of the Void - which is hands down THE most valuable card he could have cracked from that particular pack, by the way - Graham could have instead opened an Ornithopter, Paradox Engine, or Planar Bridge, which were all in the normal set.

    Yeah, the part about customs requiring a note is often correct. Working with international shipping, it can be a struggle to keep up with constant revisions to customs requirements. While digital information makes it easier to keep up with exact changes, the focus is on the letter of the requirements without any real explanations or intent. It's kind of a grab bag of "this is what customs said it wants" not "this is what customs means when they say this." It is a nightmare of rules written by different committees & no ome ever talking to each other.

    I never thought about it but yes: german creatures don't have trample but they deal trample damage ("verursacht Trampelschaden") that's why it looks like 2 keywords. And also german creatures do fly, but they never give something flying and instead give them the ability to fly ("Flugfähigkeit"). Don't ask me why.
    But hey Graham you really got better in speaking german. Who needs hard lessons when one can just open some magic cards😉

    • @Dragiceoriginal
      @Dragiceoriginal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m pretty sure the reason is “Gains flying” makes sense in English, but giving something Fliegend auf Deutsch just sounds wrong. Honestly, “gains flight” is perhaps the best way to translate it? It just works a little better, as “gains flying” is honestly really weird in normal English, we’re just used to weird magic conjugation.

    • @stephan5574
      @stephan5574 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my oppinion the german translations are very bad they could say "trapelt" instead of "verursacht Trampelschaden" or "die Kreatur fliegt" instead of "die Kreatur erhält Flugfähigkeit". Also the choice of words is sometimes poorly, with words that can be easily confused even for germans: "jene" and "jede", the first means "target", the other means "each", wich is a huge difference, if they refer to target or each creature.

    • @gingeraletrinker2449
      @gingeraletrinker2449 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stephan5574 "jene Kreatur" means "that creature" and is only used if a previous sentence refers to "eine Kreatur deiner Wahl" a.k.a "target creature", because otherwise it doesn't make sense. But yes don't confuse jene and jede ;P

    A good approximation for the ä, ö, and ü sounds in German is to treat the umlaut as an “e” directly after the vowel, for future reference

    • @gnyrinn
      @gnyrinn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also: to ö is human.
      Also also: th is pronounced as a t followed by an h. In fact, the reason why English dropped the letter þ was that it wasn’t in imported German printing presses and so it was replaced, originally by a y and then by th.

    • @screwaccountnames

      That only really works for ei and ie, and there are even English words where the pronunciation is the same, so I don't think the rule helps that much. I'll give you a list of how I would explain it:
      ei as in "heist"
      ie as in "believe"
      au as in "house" (the German word is spelled differently and pronounced almost exactly the same)
      eu as in "oil" (people who learned advanced math probably know this from Leonhard Euler)
      Those are the actual diphthongs in German. Then there are some compound words where vowels collide across syllables, in which case you just pronounce both of them. That can be hard because you have to identify the components correctly which isn't always easy.

      I think it was somewhat like 1:1000ish. Or about 1 in 2.5 displays or so if I remember correctly

      Eh, should have used google first before spouting fake news
      The Masterpiece Series will exist at a rarity higher than mythic rare. For example, in Kaladesh, you will open a Kaladesh Inventions card roughly 1 out of every 144 boosters. (Technically, the Kaladesh booster pack says the ratio is 1:2,160 cards.) This is slightly more often than opening a premium mythic rare.

    I opened a chalice of the void masterpiece at my prerelease. I did not realize it's 350 now. Last time I looked it was 150

    Interesting that "Revolt" became "Rebellion" but "Revolution" remained as-is.

    Lets not ignore that, excluding the money card, the entire pack was otherwise 76 cents, which might be the lowest pack we've ever seen. So, highest single card and possibly lowest single pack in the same crack a pack.

    The "Sch" in german sound like the "ch" in "watcher". The "ch" in german is more like an rly soft "sh". Then there are exception: A "ch" before an "s" is like a "k" and a "ch" at the start of a word is like a german "sch".
