This is my depression song, every time that cloud hangs over my head one listen to this and it’s better than any medicine I’ve ever taken. It holds close to my heart.

This song takes me back to the time I had met the man who was to become my husband. I remember when it came on in the car, I would crank it up, really loud. While he loved music, I don't think he was crazy about my levels of volume in the car. But bless his heart, he never complained . And it seemed whenever we got in the car, there it was! And up went the volume. He passed away 11 years ago. It took a long time, but I now hear this song and a smile has replaced the tears. It feels good!
Got to see Phil last night in Cleveland. I'm only fifteen and knew almost every song in the set, except this one. Now I do, and I'm so glad. Fantastic show! I'll never forget it. Great video.
Cos if it was, there's be no need for nostalgic moments like I'm having now. I'm glad music is rubbish for the most part today, gives us insight as to how awesome moments like this were
Phil's voice is absolute 100% unique. There is nobody past, present nor will be in the future to match the mans voice. Along with great lyrics, fantastic music, he just is....a legend!
This one WAS XLNT, but "No Jacket Required" and "Dance Into The Light" remain my favorites. The problem with this one was that it sold so well that the follow-up "Both Sides" wound up feeling like a letdown, despite some great songs on it. That disappointment pretty much led to Phil re-inventing his sound a bit for "Dance", which was a fantastic album, albeit in 1997, with Grunge on life support and Slut-Pop on the rise, it was a tad underappreciated.
I remember this tune was first released back in 1990, when I was a teenager, and that's why I can pleasantly state it's been part of the soundtrack of my life ever since. On the other hand, I would like to say Phil not only is such an astounding, talented musician, but he set the standard as the artist who was able to make music by being capable of singing and also playing several instruments at a professional level, which are the piano, the guitar and the drums. And it's very sad to mention this, but in the upcoming years, there will never be anybody as brilliant as Phil, being thus a reality the members of the Generation X should know it will happen for sure.
I was having a conversation with my husband recently, about our life together and this song came to mind, especially the line, "we've had our problems, but I'm on your side". I'm so lucky. I married my best friend.
ANYONE who can say ‘I married my best friend’ is indeed an fortunate person. Funny, will never forget my buddy who had his first real girlfriend before I did (9th grade) said ‘it’s great, like having a best friend you get to have s@x with’ Haha apt description!
My dad played this album so much as I was growing up. I'll always remember jamming with my dad in my pajamas to this song in the living room on Saturday mornings!
Prime Time Phil does it time and time again...When you are perfectionist...this is what you get...A flawless performance...What's not to like about this guy...The arrangement is so good in this song
2 week holiday to France with my folks, grandad and brothers 1994. Genesis and Phil constantly played throughout. My Dad complaining about Phil's 'monotone voice' (how very dare he) at the beginning of the holiday, then went to the whole family singing along to every track by the end. Thanks for the memories Mr Collins!
Sounds like we had the same dad. ALWAYS saying that Gabriel was far better than Collins and refused to have his songs on in car. Was so easy to tease him though by saying Collins was better. Good times
This song makes me cry, it has nothing to do with the dog (I cry whenever I dream about dogs because I love dogs), but this song about trying to ask for forgiveness with a long lost true love and that's what I'm trying to do.
We had a life, we had a love But you don't know what you've got 'til you lose it Well that was then and this is now And I want you back How many times do I have to say I'm sorry, yes I'm sorry How can something so good go so bad How can something so right go so wrong I don't know, I don't have all the answers But I want you back How many times can I say I'm sorry You know, you can run, and you can hide But I'm now leaving 'less you come with me We've had our problems but I'm on your side You're all I need, please believe in me, oh yeah I only wanted someone to love But something happened on the way to heaven It got a hold of me and wouldn't let go And I want you back How many times do I have to say I'm sorry, yes, I'm sorry You know, you can run, and you can hide But I'm not leaving less you come with me We've had our problems but I'm on your side You're all I need, please believe me You know, you can run, and you can hide But I'm not leaving till it's all over We've had our problems but I'm on your side You're all I need, let me show you They say you can't take it with you when you go And I believe it But taking what I've got or being here with you You know I, I'd rather leave it We had a life, we had a love But you don't know what you've got 'til you lose it Well that was then and this is now And I want you back How many times do I have to say I'm sorry, yes I'm sorry You know you can run, and you can hide But I'm not leaving less you come with me We've had our problems but I'm on your side You're all I need, please believe in me You can run, and you can hide But I'm not leaving until it's all over We've had our problems but I'm on your side You're all I need, please believe in me

I love that harmonic change in the bridge to the chorus, from B-flat major to F minor to C minor on "How many times can I say I'm sorry". That is so cool! It constantly goes between A-flat and B-flat majors for most of the song and finally resolves to E-flat (the fourth, not even the fifth!) in the chorus, and that is pretty awesome! We had a life, we had a love
But you don't know what you've got 'til you lose it
Well that was then and this is now
And I want you back
How many times do I have to say I'm sorry, yes I'm sorry
How can something so good go so bad
How can something so right go so wrong
I don't know, I don't have all the answers
But I want you back
How many times can I say I'm sorry
You know, you can run, and you can hide
But I'm now leaving 'less you come with me
We've had our problems but I'm on your side
You're all I need, please believe in me, oh yeah
I only wanted someone to love
But something happened on the way to heaven
It got a hold of me and wouldn't let go
And I want you back
How many times do I have to say I'm sorry, yes, I'm sorry
You know, you can run, and you can hide
But I'm not leaving less you come with me
We've had our problems but I'm on your side
You're all I need, please believe me
You know, you can run, and you can hide
But I'm not leaving till it's all over
We've had our problems but I'm on your side
You're all I need, let me show you
They say you can't take it with you when you go
And I believe it
But taking what I've got or being here with you
You know I, I'd rather leave it
We had a life, we had a love
But you don't know what you've got 'til you lose it
Well that was then and this is now
And I want you back
How many times do I have to say I'm sorry, yes I'm sorry
You know you can run, and you can hide
But I'm not leaving less you come with me
We've had our problems but I'm on your side
You're all I need, please believe in me

It’s true nowadays music it’s nothing compared to this masterpiece, but we can play it as many times as we want, thanks phil for everything
My favorite Phil song! One of my favorite songs period. It puts me in such a good mood. The horns are amazing and Daryl Steurmer's (?) outro solo makes my hairs stand up. Such an exciting, heartfelt and feel-good song.
This song used to drive me crazy in those days in the early 90s. Am here to tell you that Phil Collins is a legend.
This is January 2023
