At the bottom of the Pthumeru dungeons waits Blood Queen Yharnam. Queen Annalise is also called a Blood Queen. I honestly think the Cainhurst bloodline is descended from the Pthumerians.

    Excellent video, as always! Congratulations!
I noticed thanks to Herbert's posts that the "old" aspect of someone or something in FS games seems to imply that said someone or something is particularily powerful. There's the Old One in Demon's Souls, the Old Spices that are a straight up upgrade of the fresh spices in the same game, the Old Ones in DS2 that are known as powerful entities you're encouraged to hunt down to get more powerful yourself (which follows the idea of facing hardship to become stronger like you said in the video, something that is made even clearer in DS2 through Shanalotte's and Vendrick's dialogues), and of course the Old Blood in Bloodborne, the Old Lore is inspiring to the point that it is something to Fear, among other examples that don't come to mind.
    Once again, great job!

What I like the most about these videos is their (your) analytical approach to the topic. Bloodborne's lore and story is far from being intuitive and that's what makes it so special, allowing us all to make our own version of the story. Nonetheless after 6 years from the game release it's good to have something more factual to build theories upon.

I honestly love Bloodborne lore more than any other SoulsBorne game. Eldritch horror fascinates me.
So my theory/understanding is all the different blood is the same blood. But it’s used in different ways, sometimes altered though different ways, dividing the people.
They’re all using the same blood as the Pthumarians did. The blood of the Great Ones, the Eldritch blood.
The remaining sources come from Ebrietas for the church and the Blood Queen of the Vilebloods. They are all rooted in the same blood. And that blood corrupted them.

    • @johnisaacfelipe6357
      @johnisaacfelipe6357 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't think the blood commonly used and referenced in the game is sourced from the great ones.
The old blood comes from deceased living creatures who's remnant of their dying wills echoes in the peculiar set of blood that doesn't coagulate in their dead bodies.
When the students of bergynwerth went to the chalice dungeons and and discovered entire levels dedicated to harvesting uncoagulable blood, this uncoagulable blood is what they referred to as the old blood. With this old blood, dense with the echoes of dying wills, discovered miraculous properties like healing and unapparelled intoxication when imbibed by a person

So the blood itself doesn't make people become beasts, the moon precense does. So the healing church aren't that bad at all, they got the blame for the hunt but it was the schoolers contact with the old ones that started the hunt. How ironic, the evolution trough knowledge really was the doom of our race. Laurence wasnt that bad after all

    • @quintonhoffert6526
      @quintonhoffert6526 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

AFAIK the blood itself does make people become beasts, or at least it makes the transformation possible. We know this because people have been transforming into beasts in Yharnam for ages, even outside of the Night of the Hunt when the Moon Presence takes specific interest in Yharnam. Furthermore, other cities such as Loran were consumed by the beast plague and the lore does not suggest that the Moon Presence was a factor in Loran's downfall (it also doesn't suggest the Moon Presence wasn't a factor either; it's just not mentioned at all).
The Beast items (the Hunter tools and the beast-inspired Caryll Runes) present a different explanation for beasthood. Taken together, those item descriptions broadly suggest that beasthood is a natural state for mankind: essentially our most violent and animalistic nature, the primal desire to kill and feed divorced from the higher reasoning that we tend to feel separates humans from other animals. When understood that way the tie between beasthood and blood becomes more easily understandable. Those who imbibe the blood become physically closer to the Great Ones by sharing their blood (albeit much watered down for most regular sources of blood such as Blood Vials) and are strengthened by the wills of the dead carried through said blood. However, their own worst nature is also drawn out, sped up for hunters especially by being sent out to hunt and kill enemies that have specifically been demonized and deemed morally justified to kill by the Church. It takes some hunters longer than others but eventually they usually give in to their darker impulses.
We see that with Ludwig as he fell from the noble Holy Blade to the beastly Accursed. He started with the noble goal of protecting the people of Yharnam from the scourge, but as the hunt kept going on and people started criticizing him he found it easier to close his eyes, follow the "thread of light" and kill everything in front of him than to acknowledge his own failings and bloodlust. This mindset is basically the same as that of a beast: stop seeing people, stop having goals, just kill things and enjoy the feeling of killing. No surprise that with a mindset as beastly as that his body soon followed his mind. His transformation didn't actually change his mindset, which was already that of a beast: all it did was change the flesh to match the horror within. Similarly we see much the same thing with many of the Church's devotees: they put on holy airs but they commit horrific crimes, such as experimenting on the people of Yharnam (in the Astral Clocktower) or murdering the lineage of Cainhurst because their powerful blood threatened the legitimacy of the Healing Church. It's no surprise that clerics transform into the most hideous beasts. They cover up their corruption and hypocrisy with a guise of righteousness, so unsurprisingly when their true nature is revealed it is especially horrific.
Lastly, even divorced from the concept of beasthood Laurence and his associates were plainly evil. One need only look at the Fishing Hamlet. Kos and the people of the hamlet were innocent and didn't pose any threat to Byrgenwerth, but the scholars nevertheless tortured and vivisected the lot of them in the name of scientific advancement. Several times the game uses the epithet "violated" in conjunction with the Fishing Hamlet and its residents, a word that often accompanies horrifically invasive acts such as torture and rape. This would already be enough to label Laurence's group evil, as fundamentally it's no different than the actions of real life evil mad doctors like the Japanese Medical Unit 731 or the Nazi doctor Josef Mengele. Nevertheless, Laurence and the early Healing Church also experimented on people in the Astral Clocktower, leading to the various insane patients in the Nightmare that had been horrifically modified, at least one to the point of literally begging for death. The Choir, the highest echelon of the Healing Church, also created the Celestial Emissaries by iterating on the previous design that led to the Living Failures but doing it to children. The Choir's headquarters wasn't called The Orphanage for nothing: they took children and taught them eldritch knowledge in the hopes of making a scientific breakthrough. From all of this lore it should be pretty plain to see that Laurence, and the entire leadership and upper echelons of the Healing Church, were 100% evil. Even were there no beast plague they would still be a monstrous organization, and Yharnam as a city would be best served by completely obliterating them and their hold on the city.

@@quintonhoffert6526 Jesus, you gave a big lecture to read haha but thanks I think I understand better what actually happened. I think you are right the blood makes the process possible, and then the situation the people who use it are exposed makes them evolve to beastly state or godly. Maybe violence lends to becoming a beast more easily and knowledge to a old one. I know that's the church is really real, I mean everything that's happens on the game is mostly their fault if not everything. I just think that's it would be cool if Laurence started all this because he wanted to actually help people with the blood.

@@triple_m1688 It's possible that Laurence did think he had good intentions. Both Josef Mengele and the members of Japanese Medical Unit 731 thought that they were advancing humanity through their experiments, after all. But due to their incredibly evil methods, any potentially righteous goals would be tainted by that mindset. I would say the same for Laurence and the Healing Church: even if he/they did start out with good intentions, they threw away those good intentions really easily in the pursuit of knowledge and power. Once you start vivisecting people and/or performing unethical experiments on them, you lose the right to say that you have/had good intentions. If you really had those intentions, you wouldn't be willing to gain that knowledge by harming innocent people. And by the same token, if harming innocent people was something that was never a big deal to you then claiming you ever had good intentions in the first place is more or less just lying to yourself.

I quite believe there is differents kinds of blood (types) most of them discovered inside chalices dungeons and related to one Old One.
Like the differents kinds of bloods have more or less differents effects on peoples.
I can tell there is differents mutations trigerred on exposure of thoses bloods and you can more or less regroup them in a "bloodkin" familly.
The old blood may have not being the first kind of blood discovered by what was the entity that formed the church of blood administration, the upper cathedral cult, Biggenwerth and Yaarghul.
I think Ebrietas has her blood firstly tested by the upper chathedral and staying secret to everyone, this one being the maybe the origin of the likes of the pales giants and preachers on the chathedral suronding. Might also be the one used to create the emissarys and living faillures, the Iosefka impostor could have manage to get her hand on this blood and experimented on it or was from the "resersh team " that we can see in the dlc.
The blood administred that trigger the beast's curse might have been discovered inside a chalice (maybe one link to the Loran ones) and was used on the public because of being a potent medecine
and having less showing side effects.
The problem being that it was became wide spreaded item and over used and the slower rate of transformation keep staking up until most of the cummon peoples receving the blood changed (longer linms, becoming taller, more hairy, slowy becoming more violents...) some that habused too mutch became savages slaughtering beasts ence came the hunters of the church.
I think about Birgenwerth was using the blood of another Old One due to the fact that they have a lack of beasts around and overdosing it might result into transforming into something more insectoid like the bug eyes monstruosity outside or into a brainsucker.
We can also see in the Fishing Hamlet (if the place in the nightmare was a acurate retranscription of the memory of Gehrman) a more sea horiented transformation on the inhabitants.
There is not mention of blood transfusion in this hamlet but i think about it being a slow transformation over decades due to the contamined fishs they might eat (in the nightmare that not even
fish that they fishing but slugs) over the influence of Kos or is related.

Their consciousness has evolved, thanks to the blood, to a point it no longer requires a physical medium to exist. They use that medium so they can interact with the lesser beings still, but they themselves do not require a body any longer.

Something you might like to be made aware of is that when the term Eucharist is used, it is from the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, it is *not* a symbol. It *is* the full body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ that is consumed by the faithful. The Church has never taught that this was symbolic, contrarily, that it is literal. The process by which bread and wine are turned into the body and blood of Christ is known as transubstantiation, and though it is not a visible or sensible change, it is a real change in the nature of the host. This information might help you to better understand the impetus behind the word as it's used in Bloodborne's translation. It is mainly protestants that believe that communion is symbolic, but you will find some heretics that don't believe in the real presence of Christ either.

No, the old blood is the blood of the great ones. It was found by the Byrgenwerth scholars when they first opened the chalice dungeons and discovered Ebriatus. The blood echoes probably are the wills of the dead as you say, but i don't think blood echoes are connected to the old blood or coldblood. They are souls, as you said, they are connected to the dead. You get them from coldblood because it's dead people's blood. Coldblood may be similar to the old blood, but only because of blood ministration. The healing church was injecting old blood into everyone as a miracle cure-all, but the side effects are beasthood. Coldblood is similar because it is a mixture of blood and old blood. The executioner's gloves say nothing on blood as a whole because we know about the existence of old Loran. It's not that all blood works this way, it doesn't, only old blood does, it's that other places have experienced a scourge. Wherever the glove came from came in contact with old blood too.

Or maybe it was an attempt to break the curse Kos placed on them? Who knows?

@@washada I think that considering it was Gherman who summoned the moon presence with Laurence and that lead to the scourge, that they were planning some way to handle the moon presence and that's why Gherman became it's puppet. To buy time for Laurence to find a solution.

I think that "faraway lands" may indeed refer to Cainhurst. While the lore of the soulsborne series may be vast and wide, locations in the game are pretty nearby all the time. Cainhurst I believe is referred to as "land of the vilebloods" or their country, but it's visible without even needing the monocular. It's visible as a gameplay thing, but in universe supposed to be far far away. I need to replay it once again to refresh my lore

It would be good if evil was contained at most within games and books but not in reality.

I wonder, how big companies don't hire good translators so alot of the language goes lost in translation like this. I actually feel a little pissed off this takes away so much story from us. Now someone who seems to be better at japanese than the game company's translators need to decipher the lore for us like 6 years later.

You are wrong...the old blood is the pale "white blood" from the kin, and great ones. Many enemies splash white blood when hit.
And that's the ultimate goal, to become a great one through their blood, which is the actual cause of the beast scourge...the usage of old blood mixed with human blood to cure illness. That's why it's called bloodborne-disease spread by blood- but also that to become a great one You must find and consume the old pale blood, which You do by consuming the umbilical cords. Being born by the blood. The key to do so is the insight or knowledge...the more insight You will likely trascend, the less insight you possess, will more likely turn you into a beast.

Pale-blood was a reference to finding the pale blood sky, it's not an actual blood you consume. Umbilical cords isn't paleblood.

Paleblood is not actually blood. It reffers to the Moon Presence.
