    My first overseas residence was in Moscow - that was over a decade ago. I had no idea what I was doing in the supermarkets and it was quite traumatic. I knew a bit of the language but not that well...and uh, I stood out quite a bit. I can laugh about it now, of course, but that advice about having a local show you around a typical supermarket or just how the locals shop in general is life changing!

    Apart from housing costs (buying an apartment within the 5th RR and/or paying monthly rent), I found living in Beijing very cheap. In fact it was cheaper and more convenient to eat out or order online EVERY day than to buy food and cook it! I liked the vlog and like you Aleese, I was amazed the place was so empty for a Saturday afternoon!

    That "Latiao" snack is just a seasoned tofu on stick. It was invented back in those days when China is immensely poor, meat is hard to come by, so somebody substitute meat with Tofu. It's essentially beef jerky with meat replaced by Tofu.
    The monks has been eating tofu or any kind of bean products to get daily protein needs for hundreds of years, and China is kind of the pioneer in these type of Vegan food.
    Meat was replaced with Tofu, that's about it.

    From a sanitation perspective, it’s probably no worse having meat unpacked laying out there since all fruits and vegetables are also just sitting out there. I have never seen kids (or adults) playing with raw meat, seafood lol. With meat, at least you have to fully cooked it before it’s consumed. Whereas with fruits and vegetables, we often eat them raw. Anyhoo, just thinking maybe your reaction is such because we are used to prepacked meats in the US.

    • @AleeseLightyear
      @AleeseLightyear  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You could be right! It's definitely what I'm not used to seeing but one of the most important lessons I've learned in China is to not approach situations with so much doubt. If everyone in the supermarket is buying their meat this way, then I should too-- because if it was dirty or bad, then no one would buy it.

    • @loongsiu4766
      @loongsiu4766 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    What is the key and code thing on the cart? I know many countries charge for carts or require a deposit. Carts are stolen here ALL THE TIME. It's a HUGE cost to stores to keep replacing them. Some stores have put tall poles on them to keep them from going out the door. Others use technology to make the wheels lock up past the parking lot. Some hire people to go out with trucks in low-income neighborhoods looking for carts. But most stores just replace them. No one shops much without a cart.
    We also tried to charge for bags here in Utah, but the state legislature stepped in to make that illegal. And people had been pretty angry until they did that, so we are a baggy state. Only the Savers gets away with not offering bags. (They sell used donated items to help fund Big Brothers & Big Sisters.)

      @@myah3arts062 Well, interesting, chinese people eat Chinese softshell turtle. In chinese culture, turtle (乌龟) is good animal, represent long life, the Chinese softshell (甲鱼)is a completly different animal.
      The Chinese softshell turtle[1] (Pelodiscus sinensis) is a species of softshell turtle that is native to China (Inner Mongolia to Guangxi, including Hong Kong) and Taiwan, with records of escapees-some of which have established introduced populations-in a wide range of other Asian countries, as well as Spain, Brazil and Hawaii.[4]
      Populations native to Northeast China, Russia, Korea and Japan were formerly included in this species, but are now regarded as separate as the northern Chinese softshell turtle (P. maackii). Furthermore, localized populations in Guangxi and Hunan (where the Chinese softshell turtle also is present), as well as Vietnam, are recognized as the lesser Chinese softshell turtle (P. parviformis) and Hunan softshell turtle (P. axenaria).[5]
      The Chinese softshell turtle is a vulnerable species,[5] threatened by disease, habitat loss, and collection for food such as turtle soup. Additionally, millions are now farmed, especially in China, to support the food industry,[6] and it is the world's most economically important turtle.[7]
