Fashion Critic Reacts to Beyoncé's "Black is King" Style

  • Beyoncé unveiled her visual album titled "Black is King" which many see as a retelling of the famous Disney story "The Lion King" through the lens of Queen Bey. The album and movie that followed was beautiful in my opinion and was stacked with fashion looks from designers from all over the world. With brands like Tongoro Studios, Maison Valentino, Alon Livne, Loza Maleombho, Marine Serre, Wendy Nichol, Monsoori, D. Bleu. Dazzled, Balmain, Area, Burberry, and more! Her stylist Zerina Akers delivered so many different styles that told so many different stories and referenced so many different aspects of West Africa and Southern Africa cultural and historical dress. It was a delight to see Beyonce showcase such a range of styles and looks in a film that she controlled!

@@AnitaST94 haha gaga is another great example of intelligent and nuanced artistry! The difference in my head is that I think gaga has been really conceptual from the get go, her work is like a multimedia art piece, whereas Beyoncé sort of went from a girl group to solo artist that was obviously popular but a bit generic in terms of the kind of music, the videos, etc. Her early solo work is very of its time, it seems, but she's had a bit of a metamorphosis into producing really fascinating work that's like, music and spoken word with cinematic quality videos that feel like a choreographed movie. Gaga's videos are still like music videos to me (not a bad thing at all!) whereas I get a different vibe from Beyoncés.

The "grey, technicolor" look was my favorite too!! The bucket on her head is a calabash used to carry water. The look is a reference to young African girls going to get water from the river which is was a daily activity in their villages. Once I saw Beyonce's look I knew exactly what she was going for!! She killed it🔥

Peach Kebab the roots of beauty, knowledge and humanity is birthed within Africa and I'm so proud and overjoyed of the beautiful representation from Black is King. Seeing all of the East African Art, tradition, symbols, talent and creators was breathtaking. You should definitely share the meaning of these references - everyone around the world would love to hear what you have to say. You should be so proud - to come from greatness!!!

Beyoncé's hat at 20:00 reminds me of Billy Porter's fringe hat at the 2020 Grammys (his was the same colour but the fringe was silver), making me wonder if she's referencing his fashion-forward moments, or if they both have the same reference on that piece!
