Florio talks as if the Lions were an old veteran team last year that missed their window to win. Amon Ra is 24, Penei Sewell is 23, Hutch is 23, Gibbs is 22, Laporta is 23, Brian Branch is 22, Alim McNeil is 24. Jameson Williams is 23. Florio REALLY wanted Ben Johnson out of Detroit 😂 I’m sure Johnson knows there’s no guarantee. He’s a pretty smart guy. He loves being in Detroit though, and winning a Super Bowl with the man who gave him his opportunity is obviously important to him. Also, last year we saw a few of Detroit’s coaches go with Staley, Detroit’s RB coach and assistant head coach, who left Detroit for Carolina to be closer to his family. That move leaving Dan Campbell didn’t work too well for any of those coaches, did it?
As a Lions fan, it still feels strange that coaches and players want to be here. Hopefully the Lions can be good for a while.
Sidenote: Why does Myles have a Red Hot Chili Peppers hat behind him. It just seems so random.
Chillin pepps have ties to LA teams like the Rams. Have done stuff w them in the past. Myles worked for Rams so I figure from that.
How does the fact that Ben Johnson pulled out while the commanders were on the way to see him make the Commanders look bad? No one “crapped” on him from the commanders, that was the court of public opinion. People outside of DC wrote about how that was unprofessional.
The fact that you are grasping at straws to say that makes the commanders Org dysfunctional goes to show you haven’t been paying attention at all, and can’t get over the fact that things have changed there.

"Anonymous" sources gave quotes and details to outlets, including the Athletic. These sources with the information they had came from inside the Commanders regime. This is generally accepted info if you disagree and those quote hit Johnson hard and low. I wish the best for you as fans but those individuals, not the organizations, but those individuals within the Commanders organization should be ashamed of how they handled that.

People aren’t mad he didn’t want to coach it’s just that he lead them on when he wanted to stay the whole time, as well as the way he went about canceling on them.

According to Florio’s “sources”, Belichick should be the coach of the Commanders and Andy Reed will have retired from coaching.
You know he knows this is his best chance at a Super Bowl in a long time. If he gets hired as a head coach he's going to have to build a bad team up from the foundation like MCDC has done. And by the way Florio, the Lions were on everyone's radar from week 1 when they went into Arrowhead and took down the defending Super Bowl champs. Stop acting like other teams didn't respect the Lions and that the Lions were able to sneak up on teams last year. This is the NFL.

I respect him for staying and trying to see the plan through. The Lions have something special brewing. However…Washington would’ve been a great gig! A new owner who clearly wants to win. A great, young GM to help you build the roster. Solid vets to lead. Tons of cap space and pics to build YOUR team. It doesn’t get better than that. And honestly if you don’t get the “second contract” with all of that at your disposal…well…that’s on you.

Johnson literally has the perfect situation. He can stick with this young improving team for several years until an elite opportunity elsewhere opens up. he should never settle for a low tier franchise. Maybe Reid retires soon. Maybe Sirianni runs himself out of Philly. Maybe the Steelers are almost done with Tomlin. Johnson would be the very first call from all of these franchises. Until then, keep succeeding where you are.

No one has hit on more talent in the draft over the last four years than Brad Holmes. MCDC and his staff have done an amazing job coaching up this young gritty team.

What I didn't hear, and what I took from B. Johnson's presser, is that Johnson wants a superbowl ring and staying with the lions (in the sunshine) is the best way to get it. I think these two missed it. No guarantee lions will win it this yr or the next, but better chances here than any openings as a head coach elsewhere

If McCarthy had been fired, and he was in the running for the Dallas job, that could have been a different story. Even then though, he obviously wants to win a Super Bowl under the coach who gave him his opportunity. That clearly means something to him.
Because they make more money and get longer contracts that end up fully paid out, only to be able to go back to being an OC or on staff afterwards anyways if they want to.
Plenty of people fail as HC and just end up hired again as an OC/DC anyways, may as well take the opportunity when you can.
I think it's pretty easy to understand why an OC would prioritize their financial future over winning a SB.

Florio is conflicted. He loves his Minnesota Vikings but there not there yet to take the division but in a sneaky sorta way he likes the lions. He is playing both sides. In the end he will always root for his Minnesota Vikings it is what it is.
The subtly that Ben Johnson was saying without saying it, isn't so much that he wouldn't be likely to get a 2nd contract with the Commanders, but rather that he likes winning playoff games (and the inherent chance of getting to Super Bowl that winning playoff games bring), and he doesn't think the Commanders have a realistic chance of winning playoff games anytime soon. Coach up your QB and design awesome plays all you want, but if you don't have an OL or DL, you're not going to win a playoff game. And if the ownership/management isn't as skilled at building a roster, than no coach, no matter how good, is going to win many playoff games, if any. So all that said, he'd rather make a push of a Super Bowl, with the glory of being the guy who called the plays that got them there, rather than be a 1 term coach of a dysfunctional organization that maybe gets to the Wild Card game once.

I appreciate those that cover all the NFL but unfortunately you do not get in the weeds of a specific team. I wouldn't expect Ben Johnson to either. I am just going to say this Washington ownership is far better than you are giving credit to. They are measured and calculated. We may only see minimal improvement this year in win loss recordsas that's what the metrics say about such a large turnover in roster but I have no doubt about the long term success of this franchise. I would suggest the national media at least stop hating on Washington before they are proven wrong. If you do not believe me look not only to Adam Peters hire and what was done to hire him and put him in place, also look at the front office hirings since the NFL draft. They are (not so) quietly putting together a good front office and a talented coaching staff. The roster will follow.

Ben Johnson turned down the Commanders because their Ownership acted weird reportedly then they decided to trash BJ publicly... then that same Ownership not long after Ben Johnson turned them down had Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, and JJ McCarthy all in at the same time for a pre draft dinner. That's not how other teams operate and Daniels felt slighted even though they ended up drafting him. If between Ben Johnson's comments on Ownership and that dinner doesn't confirm that Commanders ownership is unorthodox, I don't know what does.
I heard he wasn’t comfortable with a lot NBA people involved. I mean Josh Harris is a NBA owner. I think everyone is overthinking our ownership. This is his first go around in NFL. He has been trying to understand everything and be involved at least his first year with team.

Obviously the Lions are a great team and will make waves this season. Last year, everything fell into place. There is no guarantees the Lions will get the NFC championship or even win the division. The Lions were lucky last year in that, the Bears were not doing good, the Vikings had QB problems and were shooting themselves in the foot and the Packers were a young team figuring things out. Last year the Lions had the best opportunity to be the NFC North champs and the capitalized on it, but this year, isn't a cake walk for them. They have much harder schedule, there division rivals have made the necessary upgrades, and the Packers are not fooling around this year like they did last season. So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if the Lions make the wild card, and GB is the division champs and the Lions not making it back to the NFC championship. Last year was the golden opportunity, it's much harder for them this coming season.
But the Lions are much better now, they should have the same divisional record and a better overall record this year.

Totally disagree with their take. Saying, "I wanted to stay in the sunshine a little longer," is not what you want to hear from a potential HC candidate. That's fine from a player, but a coach should be of the mindset that he's going to go in and turn the ship around. If he had just said that he had unfinished business in Detroit, fine, but saying that he wanted to stay because it was sunnier in Detroit is weak.
Lions ain't making the playoffs
