Growing miniature & small orchids: the species orchid Dendrobium loddigesii.

  • My first video of 2022 is a celebration of this miniature to small species orchid Dendrobium loddigesii. It's a nobile type which for me always seems to bloom exactly over the Christmas holidays when I'm away and miss seeing the beautiful, delicate AND fragrant flowers! But this year all things conspired to have the blooms open when I could enjoy them so I thought it a good opportunity to look at a smaller orchid which is perfect for growers with not much room as it's small AND vigorous AND tough - what more could you want?!
    I mention www.orchidspeci... in the video which is a GREAT resource to find out more about species orchids you might have or want to research.

    Just met someone Who has them on sale, the climate where I live may be just right for growing this plants. It rains on may to august and the temperatue is mild but we get to 4°C on winter

      Sounds very like my climate! Go for it! Give it a dryer winter and more light in winter and you should have success! Good luck!

    This is the most "upright" growing loddigesii I've ever seen. I assume you haven't bound the canes to get them more upright when growing? If not, either you have a very interesting cultivar, or perhaps this is a primary hybrid of some kind? Even the margin on the lip seems a bit narrower than is typical. Either way, I wish mine would grow as neatly! Mine is a rangy, twisty mass with a mind of it's own... : D

    I just ordered one of these little beauties and it should be here today! The one I bought is more of a draping den. With longer canes hanging down. I wonder if it is the same? The photo is the same and the name is the same. I’ll have t o wait and see I guess. Mathew you are feeding my orchid addiction! Hahaha!

    • @helloplantlovers
      @helloplantlovers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A healthy addiction! Dendrobium loddigesii is pendulous but it's still a small orchid so the canes won't ever be as long as some of the more dramatic ones! Good luck with yours - I find it super easy!

    • @trishsmith2811
      @trishsmith2811 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, it got here after being in transit for 8 days :( all the leaves are yellow and falling off. But most of the canes are still green. It will be ok I think but I won’t be seeing a bloom any time soon. Any information on what I should do now? I repotted it since the bark was soaking wet and old. I also purchased a Mtdm. Pacific Waters “Pauls Pride”. It is a mature plant with a flower spike in bud. Crossing my fingers it doesn’t blast. It might sound strange but I find it a very exciting and hopefully rewarding hobby! I just need to stop ‘fussing’ over them!!!!

    • @helloplantlovers
      @helloplantlovers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@trishsmith2811 Not strange at all and very satisfying! With the Dendrobium I'd try and keep it as calm as possible after all that travel trauma! I'm not sure where you are - spring or autumn - but try not to over water it. And when you do use a very diluted seaweed based liquid tonic just to give it a little boost every 2 or 3 waterings for a few weeks. They are fairly tough though so should bounce back. Older canes will drop their leaves anyway. Good luck with them both!

      Hello again Mathew! It’s November here and heading into winter. I know I should be putting my loddigesii in a cool\cold bright area But mine is still actively growing roots and new leaves. Should I wait until it stops growing before I put it in it’s cold bright area or just do it now? I can’t seem to find an answer to my problem. Ugh, I’m worried I’ll do the wrong thing. Not having an answer is driving me nuts so I hope you can help me. All my orchids grow in the house in case that helps. Thanks❤

    So happy to stumble upon this video. Great presentation. I paid a considerable sum for one of these in Canada and it’s been shooting of keikis through the year. Like you, I plucked off the first batch and they are thriving in a terrarium. No rebloom yet however so I’ll leave the new batch on and see how it does. I’ve definitely kept it wet over the winter so I’ll try a bit drier. It’s in pure moss.. no bark. (As it came) but it’s incredibly dry here most of the year >30%
    So lovely to see it in splendorous bloom!

    What is the key difference in caring for Dendro Bohemian Rhapsody and Dendro Loddigesii? Thanks.

    • @helloplantlovers
      @helloplantlovers  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there - I don't grow Dendrobium Bohemian Rhapsody so I couldn't say. But looking at it's parentage I would say the same growing conditions would work which is basic Dendrobium care: plenty of light in winter, keep dry in winter and ramp up watering & feeding in spring. Good luck!

  • @huynhcindy512

    • @helloplantlovers

    Quick ?, Do you use a slow release fertilizer specific to orchids? Or just a general one

    Hi Matthew, i live in Canada, I have a den crepidatum, den loddgiseii and den aggregatum for years and was not able to get them to bloom. I’m just wondering when should I restart watering them after the winter rest. Do I wait until i see the flower spike first or should I restart watering now since the weather is starting to warm up. Thanks.

    • @helloplantlovers
      @helloplantlovers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I don't let mine dry out completely in winter - very occasional light watering and misting on sunny days. So if there's no sign of action yet mist them on a sunny morning, and then I start light watering as the weather warms up regardless. No flowering could be due to not enough light in winter. They also like to be quite tight in the pot. Good luck!
