My Dendrobiums - The Winter Resting Types

- Looking at the Winter resting type Dendrobiums in my collection - many are 'different' in some way. Some are dropping leaves, some are not. Each orchid has to be watched for signs of too little water etc.

Den. loddigesii
Den. jenkinsii
Den. senile
Den. findlayanum
Den. aphyllum
Den. primulinum
Den. friedricksianum
Den. Nestor
Den. anosmum

As we head into Autumn, I'm sure I'll do something on this subject as it seems many struggle with the idea.

It took me several Winters to get this rest thing somewhere near it so that all those Dens. bloom well.

Even though I grow my orchids in the home, my grow room is around 18-20c in the winter. Mainly because one of the windows isn't sealed properly. I do have to run a humidifier in there because of the dry winter, but doing that I can keep the humidity around 55-60%. Not ideal, but not too bad. My resting dendrobiums are right on schedule with their leaves dropping.😊

Until I watched this video, I had very little knowledge of what "winter rest" required of certain dendrobiums. It's now too late for this season, but I am going to do a lot of research on many of my plants to make sure they are properly rested for next year. This was an excellent primer to kick start further educating myself on a great topic and I am going to replay this video a few more times. Thank you Roger!
Try and treat each one as an individual as the timings will vary from plant to plant.
Great video and info Roger. Yeah. Here in NW Fl I actually get seasons and the opportunity to leave my winter rest Dendrobium outside until mid Jan. My first year with them and keeping my fingers crossed. My leaves are just beginning to drop. Keep the great videos coming. 😀
It took me 2-3 years to get the Winter 'right'.
All looks super extra healthy!! The phylum too, no surprise :) I'll post a pic of mine tomorrow... One cane is pretty damn long! Fingers crossed for the blooming... All depends on my father now ahah
Finally I can watch these types of Vids with relevance! I purchased a Den. Findlayanum!! But it's the tiniest of things...I think half the size of what you said you started with...I also had to remove a cane a week after receiving it. I've had it a little over a month and besides what happened in the first week "no news is good news". Besides it's size and it being a new type of Den. for me it has 2 other issues: There are a couple of black spots and on another cane some sort of "bubbling". It was the only one I could find for purchase so I'm ecstatic to have it! I'm keeping it well watered and NOT attempting to rest it because (although it was sold as "blooming size") it must be a seedling and the oldest cane starts to dessicate if I miss a day! (To it's defense I have potted in quite an airy situation...I didn't know what to expect and now I just don't want to disturb it, but as long as I water daily it seems happy.) The main thing I'm concerned about is light...when I received it the leaves were paper thin and transparent, they have a little bit more "substance" now. I hope to post a pic to your page first thing (for me) in the morning! (Actually it's "first thing in the morning" right now LOL😵 but I don't want to go in there turning on lights it may cause the Phals to bud blast😅) So maybe the video is not "relevant to me" just yet, but hopefully if all goes well it will be...and I enjoyed it!

I would treat it like other orchids and hope that the new growths start from the base soon. It's a pity you live where you do as I have some really strong healthy keikis for other people in the Spring - they are around a foot long with loads of roots.

Also I know that you wouldn't send someone a virused plant...I can't be sure what the deal is with mine, but the sun will be up here in around an hour and then I will post to FB, please take a look!
Your spot on about those resting types, mine get nearly full sun till around noon then shade till 3 pm or so then bright shade. Hopefully we'll both have an explosion of dendrobium blooms this season.
And where folks live in places where the days are short and light is weak in Winter, they can be fooled into thinking the Winter is bright by keeping them more shaded during the growing season.

Some say that the Den. nobiles need a Winter rest. The actual species certainly does. But I've found that the complex hybrids just need brighter light and kept cooler with a bit of a reduction in the watering and they bloom fine. This also gets the new growths going earlier in the season so they have more chance of reaching full size.

Both jenkinsii and senile and great plants to have even if they don't bloom.
Great video Roger! I was wondering what the status of last winter's rest was, now I know. If they all perform like the anosum, it should be a fabulous display. I was wondering what the average temp and humidity level your greenhouse maintains. I have a grow room in my house, but I am able to cool it down, just not maintain a moisture level more than 45 to 50%. During Winter, my thermostat is set to 12C so that's my night time minimum and during the night, the humidity is around 90% - I keep the door shut at night. Once it gets light, I open the door which lets air in from the lounge which raises the temp to around 20C - a bit higher if the sun is out. The day time humidity is around 70-75%.

Hi Roger, i'm always waiting to see videos on your Den.anousmum as I'm still not sure how to look after mine...it seems to be still in its growing season because of the tricky central heating in the house during our cold Canadian winters, and i'm half minded about moving it right now to a cooler room, as it might be a shock. Any thoughts? The canes are quite plump, shiny and leaves are still bright green (no signs of slowing down) but that would just mean that i miss out on any chance of blooms, right? Your thoughts are appreciated!
If you have somewhere much cooler with brighter light, it may not be too late but the general idea is to slow these down during November into December so that by now, they are fully resting.
When you water just a trickle could I use a spray bottle and just spray the sticking out roots?
What would be the best winter treatment for cpmplex hybridized nobile, ex Comet king, s.d.apollon? No full rest? Thanks.
The nobile species needs the strict rest but that fussiness seems to have been bred out of the hybrids so we can get away with just lower temps and brighter light - they are often the first to bloom.
So if older canes retain even one or two leaves is it safe to assume that this is a type that doesn't need a strict rest? From the older canes my four seem to drop all their leaves sometime after year two *from what I can see.* I haven't had any of them for a year yet so I can't be certain. Keith
It's more about when the leaves drop relative to the age of the canes - those that drop their leaves during Winter after that season's growth are annually deciduous and will need the 'proper' rest but then so do some of the others that hold their leaves. It has to be down to the individual orchids. The can only be general rules?
I don’t think there’s any doubt that you have to get to know each plant. I’ll be fertilising the Lady Colman now that it’s formed buds and the Cooksonianum now that it’s started a new growth. The IKEA no ID is being allowed to dry out completely between watering but isn’t getting fed. By this time next year I should have a better handle on things. Thanks for the comments. Keith

I know nothing about the Catasetum types as I don't have any. But that is a good one - costs a fortune in the EU for just a small piece.
The buds shall arise where the leaves have "just" fallen off on the Den. aphyllum... it can sometimes keep the leaves and throw up flowers but that is rare... the previous cane won't re-flower but it can throw keikis.
Not all winter resting [less watering] orchids are deciduous... many of the local hardcane dendrobs from where I am, need a winter rest but the trees don't always drop their leaves... gums [Eucalupts] do but not everything.
This is the 'age-old' problem - they all need less water in Winter but how much less?

I used this as it is from the town closest to me but I do keep temperature and rain charts as well.
Our yearly rainfall is roughly around 1.2 meters, northwards is around 3-4 meters.
