Making a Terrarium with miniature Orchids! 🌱🥰

  • Today I take you along as I create my very first Orchid terrarium with miniature Orchids! This is a work in progress, but I am happy with the beginnings!
    🦋 More info below! 🦋
    For the terrarium I used an older cube aquarium that I never liked for my Betta Fish Charlie, he looks much better in a longer aquarium now. The tank has a lid which does not close shut, which is exactly what I want!
    The LED lamp is an 8W Dennerle lamp which was way too dim for my current tank go.missorchidg...
    As for substrate and decorations I used:
    - ODLA coco peat from IKEA
    - Bark Chips Reptibark from ZooMed
    - Perlite
    - Activated charcoal from the Pet Shop
    - Stones and wood from the Pet Shop
    The Orchids I used: Restrepia elegans, Pleurothallis tribuloides, Schoenorchis tixieri, Aerangis kirkii, Dendrobium cucumerinum, Ludisia discolor, Paphiopedilum delenatii, Dendrobium loddigesii and some clover.
    The setup is not finished and I plan on adding more orchids. Some might not remain here we will see how they do!

    Considering the number of comments about this and probably future comments, I think I should put this in a pinned comment lol: I have a different opinion on drainage layers. I believe they will only accumulate water, not facilitate evaporation. I believe they promote pathogen build up, so for now I don't feel like drainage layers are a safe option for my plants. I want them to have healthy, aerated roots, so I prefer the entire medium communicate, share water and be evenly moist, or dry, like I do in my pots. A drainage layer stores stagnant water full of decomposition biproduct and that acidifies the environment. It's not hard for me to be careful how I water, I am always careful with my potted orchids ☺️ If you think drainage layers make sense, by all means use them, I really don't think they do at all, at least for orchids.. 5 more cm is not drainage for the length roots can grow, it's just wasted space for me. I always do things my way here on my channel and I document the results of my actions, so give me the benefit of the doubt and let's see what happens with doing things my way 😉

      Please don’t confuse and mislead the newbies about terrarium Drainage. You think Drainage layer only accumulate water because your Drainage layer doesn’t have a hole and a pipe to drain the water completely. It’s just a regular aquarium .The purpose of Drainage layer is not to hold water. You just misunderstood the whole concept completely.

    I've been wanting to do this for a while. I have a few orchids in tiny terrariums already and can't wait to have the space for this kinda setup. I love the clover. There is a dark variety that makes little root bulbs and pretty little white flowers. Just throwing that out there, they are some of my favorite flowers.

    Hello,
    if I am not wrong, Schoenorchis is a german or dutch word. I think it is pretty hard to pronounce for non-native speakers. I (as a german native speaker) would pronounce it that way:
    The "sch" equals an englisch "sh", but the "oe" is an umlaut that cannot be found in the english language. It is close to the "i" in "Bird". "Or" is the same as the english word. The "ch" can be reproduced by trying to say the english "sh" and smiling at the same time. The "is" is again equivalent to the english "is".
    I think the most widespread english version is "Shon-or-kis", with the "schoen" pronounced like "shone".
    I hope I could help!
    Leonard

    Wow... the timing is perfect. I have been researching how to do this for a couple days. The 2 plants you have next to it would also look amazing in it. There is a multi-green variety of clover and I think it has purple flowers. I am even more motivated now.

    Orchid vivarium looks great! Don't worry if it's looking a bit empty at the moment; any vivarium will take time to grow and mature.
    A few pointers and ideas:
    1. Consider adding a _Haraella retrocalla_ if you can find one. It's a miniature orchid endemic to Taiwan which has flowers that looks like a bumblebee. It's adorable and very easy to grow.
    2. You _may_ want to consider adding a fan inside the vivarium to keep the air moving. Epiphytic orchids are used to great airflow up in the trees and air in an enclosure tends to be stagnant. A good rule of thumb to know if you have sufficient airflow is that you should be able to see a slight movement of the leaves.
    Good luck with your project!

    Love the terrarium that you have created. Well done. I am looking forward to the updates and the orchids that you add to it as well as the more items add to the design. I am however one of less is more. I love the orchids and plants making up the terrarium and not the items. It is fun watching one's terrarium come into it's own. Have fun and enjoy. Have a wonderful weekend.

    Very pretty :) curious to see how it progresses when everything grows nicely :)
    I would have added a layer of clay balls or pebbles and charcoal at the very bottom then cover it with a fine plastic mesh and then put in the soil, that way the water would sit there instead of in the soil.

    Looks good! Often we put down leca with a permeable sheet over it as a bottom layer, then the soil. This creates a drainage layer so the soil doesn't get soggy. You should add a couple dart frogs or a gecko!

      Dart frogs would need a mister system they need very very high humidity

    • @tenchuu007
      @tenchuu007 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jakeschreiner9348 that's relatively easy to maintain in a glass aquarium. My setup uses leca at the bottom which I never let stagnate but the balls are always a little wet. Springtails migrate down there and keep it clean. That humidity helps the soil, and then a misting three times a day works fine for them. Incorporating the orchids is the part I'm getting to next, but as their care requirements are very similar to the frogs, they should do well.

  • @lccch4115
    @lccch4115 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very cool one! Sophronitis cernua would definitely look cute and the foliage is not ugly at all! ;)
    Too bad Dendrobium Cuthbersonii is a cool grower, as it's tiny and blooms for a very long time it would have been awesome
    Maybe some hybrids would be more warmth tolerant?
    I thought a Nepenthes would be amazing in there too but they grow so much faster than orchids and I'm not sure if you could find any that remain compact
    It's great that springtails are already doing the job with molds
    Waiting for updates :)

    Hello, I've got a question about orchids and terrariums...
    Is it possible to make a terrarium with "real" rain without damaging the orchids? I know that water on Orchid leaves or in the crown are bad (pls correct me if I'm wrong there). So if I would let it rain in my terrarium I can't avoid running water over the leaves or in the crown. Would it help if there's some kind of wind ?
    Btw keep on going the good work ! ツ

    Clover shouldn't have runners unless it's a weird one, you may have an Oxalis or a Wood Sorrel. If it's flowers will tell. Clover flowers form in very round clusters that look like a cheerleaders pompom. Oxalis and Wood Sorrel have petunia like flowers.

    5:00 The name of the wood you are looking for is called "drift wood" (used in aquariums). You can find "drift wood" online too in case you are having a problem finding a good piece at your local pet store. ......and as you already know, drift wood can be pricey.

    Did you treat the wood at all? I've read a few sources that says to boil and soak the wood so the tannins are removed so it doesn't hurt the plants. Thoughts?

    I think you could put an schoenorchis scolopendria in the terrarium, it is an unique plant and has an amazing creeping habit as i heard. A similar orchid to it is angraceum distichum.

    Hi Danny, hope you're well. I just watched your terrarium making for orchids. How are the plants doing? Has anything rotted? How often do you water it?

    I came across this video as I’m looking to create my own terrarium for some mini orchids. Not sure if you’ve posted an update or not, but how did this setup work out? Most of the orchid terrarium videos I find are of orchids still in pots, but I prefer the natural look that you have here so I’m curious to know if this worked out?

    Beautiful set up. Do you suppose this type of terrarium would work for a mounted ghost orchid? I'm absolutely obsessed with them but can't figure out a way to recreate it's environment enough to keep one in my home. Thoughts?

    Did you use anything to attach the mounted orchids? (Wire, a tie of some kind? )

    Hi I have a question! I got a phalaenopsis orchid about three weeks or so ago and it had beautiful blooms. It also bloomed a couple more flowers in my care. Then a week or so ago I bought miracle gro orchid plant food mist and I sprayed the moss and the leaves a bit. I don’t know if I over fertilized because I did spray like a lot. The next day my flowers started falling off and it made me really sad. And then even my new blooms fell off even though they’re supposed to last for weeks. However the roots are green and there’s one that has a green tip that’s growing to the top. Did I lose my blooms because I overfertilized my orchid? If so, should I fertilize again or should I leave it alone? I’m also not sure how many sprays I’m supposed to give the plant from the bottle. Thank you!

    Could you put jewel orchids in something like this?
    What medium would you use?

    I'm actually just found this vid via search and I'm kinda interesting - how this setup is doing now? Because I'm thinking about making something similar for sone of my plants, and I was thinking about how to make it more long-lasting and easy to maintain.

    One question though, how did you mount the angraecum because you didn’t take a close up and suddenly the angraecum was attached. Thanks!

    I thought you were gonna use a ficus pumila, or a selaginella species as the forground plant, or even a moss species, or a liverwort.

    Hi, I am hoping you can help! I have my phals growing in semi-hydroponics in a clear container. The orchids are thriving however, there is a build up of algae. What would you suggest? I have tried hydrogen peroxide which has helped a little. I was wondering whether springtails would help? Any advice would be great appreciated! Thank you!

    Hi Danny! The terrarium looks good.
    Edit: Just realized you talked about him in the springtails video!
    I would highly recommend Tanner's channel SerpaDesign, he does some amazing terriums and has some excellent examples and explanations (including on hacks how to do the draining bottom that some have talked about in the comments).

      @kenazaragozavelasco3837 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, I also recommend it, he explain the false bottom( with leca, pebbles etc) for drainage and also options for overwatering in terrariums like yours.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I have a different opinion on drainage layers. I believe they will only accumulate water, not facilitate evaporation and promote pathogen build up, so for now I don't feel like drainage layers are a safe option for my plants. I want them to have healthy roots. I prefer the entire medium communicate, share water and be evenly moist, or dry, rather than store stagnant water full of decomposition biproduct. It's not hard for me to be careful how I water, that is one of the first things we learn as orchid growers, moreso than other, more tolerant to root suffocation plants 😉

      I don’t write to often in English and I’m shy, but I been waiting for you to do this, that’s why I’m writing to you finally. Any way, just and idea, when I wanted to built my terrarium I was worried with overwatering, how to take out the water, and I used and idea of that channel to take out the extra water in the bottom, and be able to see it (I was worried to kill my orchids). I’m a fan of yours and I would like to share some names of species that have work for me , but I have to look for the names, the choose that you make is excellent. I’m really looking forward to see how it goes, how you try new things in this adventure , best wishes 😊👍🏼
