Ugly disclaimer: This is what a real practice session looks like.
The purpose of this video is to give people a fair idea of how a real practice session looks like when you approach a piece from scratch. You usually hear the sparkly clean finished product, but it tends to always start somewhere deep in ugly-town. Sometimes practicing is demotivating, especially when Señor Show-off over on instagram has uploaded a perfect 1-minute clip of themselves nailing that stupidly difficult passage.
If you feel like you've hit a wall in practicing, just know that EVERYBODY has struggles. I hope you feel better after watching me get my ass kicked by the first 2 phrases of the Sauret Cadenza.

The most impressive thing about this video is not necessarily how well he plays (he's an international soloist after all) but rather how much result he gets out of an half an hour of practice. I would need weeks to get a similar scale of improvement practicing something on my level.
This shows what a massive bedrock of ingrained skill he's got.

Thanks for being humble enough to allow us to see you struggle through this difficult piece of music. There are no real shortcuts to mastering something like this. Discipline, dedication and determination over time gets you there. Thanks for the encouragement to take it slow and keep practicing.

From twoset violin.. I just enjoy watching these kinds of video even i'm not playing any instrument.
I really like this, I hope pros like you would record how they would first dissect a piece they have never played (preferably semi well known) I've always been curious how fast they can actually sightread certain passages and how quickly/slowly it takes them to play it.
And your explanation of what you're doing is great too!
Another thing is, it would be cool to see what you would do for a proper day of practise session, eg how many hours, if you ever do exercises and studies and what warmups you do (if you do any of those still!) etc.
Decent sight reading skills that practice and understanding of music theory. Like any language skill, it also has to be maintained by most people. I was late to learning it, but did well once, but have lost that ability. It might come back with study. No matter his understanding of music theory helping him learn the music is apparent when discusses which scales. Also, I think the point “95% is muscle memory” and the music will come along the way is an interesting one. It is a lot of practice hours for sure.
I remembered a summer when I wanted so badly to play The Devil's Trill Sonata. That summer, I practiced 4 hours a day, everyday, until my hands were too damaged. A year later I came back and got it. Maybe these things just come in time :D
That is nothing I play 8 hours everyday... but yea piano doesn't kill hands do they 🤔

I love the sand analogy. I typically use practice as a water faucet. With each rep, the knob gets tighter and more information is retained.

This the beauty of Rey Chen. When we ever see a professional violin practices in front of us. Showing us he is normal person like need to work with a lot of effort to get things done. I think he is great person

I just realized that hilary hahn plays this in her recordings of paganini. Jesus christ, I did not even know it was this hard because she makes it sound so easy. I've gained even more respect for her.
Yes she does, however it’s MUCH SLOWER than the top technicalists. Check out Roman Kim’s version and it Will TRULY blow your mind❣️

Can you record yourself practicing with different musical ideas on a piece like Beethoven, Mendelssohn, or Saint-Saëns

Heifetz's advice about practicing- First, mental study with music and then actual practice. Get the left and then right hand, and synchronize both.
Look at the music before go to bed for memorizing.
Practice 3rds first when practicing scales.
Look at your fingers.

Thank you so much for this expert advice! Exactly what I needed to hear. I just started playing instruments again including the violin. The slowness can feel burdensome cause I want to sound the way I do in my head/dreams in real life but the way you describe practicing makes it so much more manageable

Bravo! for sharing this! I would counter this is not ugly, but beautiful that you demystify the work that happens behind the performances. You inspire me (and I'm not a violinist)! Those work sessions we do in any art can erode our sense of progress if we don't teach ourselves how to learn before we teach ourselves new techniques.

Please post more practice videos! It’ll help me get back into playing violin! I haven’t been able to do really serious practicing for over a decade because I kept getting avian birdbone illness injuries so I need there to be more practice videos and so do the rest of us!
My favorite version of this is Leonid Kogan's. I don't play but i definitely listen, & I spend a certain amount of time listening to master classes & practices like this. I think it makes me appreciate the playing more.
