I met Narita Tatsuki many years ago at a masterclass given by his teacher. He's a very nice guy! It's an *absolute crime* that he got silver in that QE competition...the guy who won gold was a student of the chair of the committee. Forget this Paganini, Narita's performance of the modern piece commissioned for the competition they only have like 2 weeks to learn is what really blew all the other competitors out of the water. Today he's doing some interesting things in Japan, but he should be a household name.
This is a hard piece... why do composers even write these beautiful pieces if they are so hard that many can't play it? That is the point for slow ballads and chorales.
When Tschiakovski wrote his violin concerto several proclaimed it was unplayable (including his mentor) - it wasn't until one violinist (The one who taught Heifitz, I believe) played it successfully and a well known conductor praised it that it became a classic
In all honesty, thanks guys. Knowing people like you still struggle with pieces and make crunchy sounds on the violin when you're learning and practicing help me remember that it's ok even when I know that my playing sounds like a drowning cat.
